Germany has some faster routes - for example the newly improved Munich-Berlin relation. Stuttgart-Cologne in 2h is also a good deal for over 350km. Nowhere near 1200km of course. Germanys geography and population density makes faster trains not very economically feasible. The first IC-Experimental went well over 400KpH back in the day in testing, though, so its not a lack of technical ability 😁

I have only travelled on the ICE1 so can’t comment on more modern versions, so cannot compare but given the general trend is now on lighter more fuel efficient trains I can see how the older trains are sturdier more comfortable and ride better also the seats tend to be better padded and certainly more comfortable.
695 km is the air-line distance. The rail-distance is a lot higher. The normal full price is 232 €, but cheaper if you book in advance.(good luck on holydays).
@@NonstopEurotrip That makes my calculation comparing with LNER a bit different but still, at 75 mph still a good bit slower than LNER. Much more comfortable than LNER though. LUMO have better seating I believe.

I think the ICE 2 trains are the most comfortable, and the ICE 4 is the worst in terms of comfort. I went Mannheim to Berlin in one of those ICE 4 trains in 1st class and it was just SO uncomfortable. I'm glad I only paid 63 Euros for my ticket from Paris to Berlin (including a 2-way regional train transfer between Mannheim and Heidelberg - where I'd stayed overnight to go to the very special Tuesday night at the Miramar Weinheim waterpark).
@@NonstopEurotrip well you need to try them. The seating is slightly different than the others. I definitely wasn't unhappy with the comfort, and it was definitely superior to the ICE 3.
They probably just don't have catering services in Switzerland, and Karlsruhe was the first stop on the line where the train could actually get replenished. It might even be an agreement with the Swiss railways so that people are encouraged to spend their money on breakfast before leaving while still in Switzerland.
Aproaching and leaving ICEs to and from Frankfurt main station often collect delays because in this massive junction infrastructure is so overloaded that trains often have to wait until they can join the station and leave again. 10 minutes delay is a standard there.
Great trip Max 👍🏻. At this point in my life it’s First Class for me (Executive Class on Frecciarossa) and either First or Business Class when flying. I put myself through school, studied hard (missed being highest in my graduating class by 1 point 🙄), and have worked hard. Now it’s about comfort, convenience, and ease of living. 😉. Looking forward to your upcoming reviews 😉👍🏻
Great review Max!! Love the faux leather sears and wood finishes....very club like and relaxing. Curious why first class pays for food? First class in the US usually includes food. 😀😀😀♥️
@@NonstopEurotrip Thanks Max. Perhaps one day food will be included in first class fares. I remember an overnight train journey here in the US that I took back in the late 50's that included meals(I was in first class in a roomette).
First Class is a lot cheaper here. For example, a First Class Ticket on a 1h trip that would cost up to $300 in the US, might cost $20-$90 in Germany. DB loses millions of Euros every year with the payed Restaurants, and a free meal service on such low prices (in comparison to the US) is not profitable in any way.
The food in the dining car is always a bit more expensive, but I've never had a bad meal on the train. That was already very good in the days of the Deutsche Bundesbahn.
As a person who is 189 and built like a stick I must say that the 1st class seats are one of the best seats i've had aboard a train (mostly travel 2nd class) but the headrest turned into a shoulder rest which meant I finished the 4H ride with upper backpain and the padding on the seat was limited, it wasn't comming back from amsterdam pride bad but it also wasn't ice 3 neo good. Overall if a ice 3 neo is 10/10 and a lner 801 2nd class is 0/10 this train is a 8/10!
Thanks to this video, I paused in the middle to spend an extra €10 on seats for my upcoming trip from Frankfurt Flughafen to Freiburg im Breisgau haha. Not sure if I’m on the ICE 1 or another model, but I am annoyed that the DB website didn’t show the direction of travel for the seat selection. I’d hate to end up riding backwards.
Been on ICE1 only once and by accident (an IC I was on has run someone over - still not sure accident or suicide - and was held up, and after evacuation, endless waiting and a trip to nearest station on a bunch of random emergency vehicles the teain they got as substitiution was an ICE 1. Despite the fat I was travelling 2nd class before, I went straight for the seat in a 1st class compartment. As some of my co-,passengers went for a local train instead of waiting for replacment, and the train I was originally on was much shorter,I got the whole compartment for myself. It was a short trip though, I was going from Cologne to Koblentz and the whole incident happend between half and two-thirds of the way.
I am just 16 years old, so I usually choose second class because of price Matters. I've already booked my next trip from Regensburg to Mainz and back, which is 4h drive one way, also with the ICE1 in Second class. I have booked one month before, so it has an one Way Price of 13,40€, which is a really good price i think
Yeah you never know 😁. Btw as the train was clearly still on the Hanover-Würzburg high-speed line, Hildesheim was conspicuously missing from the stop list...
One of my best friends moved to Berlin a couple of years ago. I usually take this exact ICE line from Karlsruhe to Berlin when I visit him. With a little planning you can get decent prices for first class and enjoy the ride even more. Haven't visited him since they started running ICE4s on this line. Pandemic and stuff... :) Can't wait for the ICE 3 Video. Will you review Class 403/6 separately to Class 407? The missing lounge behind the driver in 407 is a real shame btw.
It makes me laugh, the kind of train we get in the UK for the equivalent of €43.90 is a joke. We still have pacer trains which are actually based on a bus body! Brilliant video, thank you.
Not necessarily. I've had some excellent UK advanced ticket prices lately. And all the pacers are gone now. Incidentally, the walk-up price of this trip is €130 🤷🏻♂️
@@NonstopEurotrip Sadly the pacers are still here up north, I am near Burnley and Preston. There is currently a big issue about how much our government is spending on public transport in the north vs the south (around £300 per person vs £900). It is a fair comment about advance tickets, there are some bargains to be had, especially on some of the main routes.
@@TheTouristLine I am certain the pacers have now all gone. Northern ran its last Pacer service months ago. They did outstay their welcome however. You are right about advance purchase on long distance roues. LNER fares on the East Coast Mainline London to Edinburgh are from £27 (second class) for the close to 400 mile journey with Lumo offering even cheaper. What did strike me was the journey time. At 7 hours 20 minutes the DB service represents an average speed of only 59 mph whilst the LNER service averages over 90 mph and does the journey in 4 20 hours 20 minutes. Which should be described as 'High Speed'? I live in GWR territory and fares down here are pretty steep especially local services.
@@NonstopEurotrip I will happily stand corrected on this one, I was trying to think of when I last went on my local line and it would have been before Nov 2020
I miss the compartments of the new(er) ICE versions, If I have the chance I still pick a seat in a compartment rather than in open space. I never had a bad experience in them and enjoy the privacy and it is usually more quiet as well (in my experience at least). I understand that they take up a lot of space in the train and that the DB and everyone else makes more money with getting as much people as possible into the trains, but I still miss compartments. Maybe it's my age and me being an introvert, but I always liked the compartments. Be it on the old regional trains in Germany or later in the ICE 1 and later areas, I also prefered the original seats in the old models. Anyway times change, but as someone who grew up in a small town and used trains every day to get to work in the next bigger city and in a family without car, public transport was always used, I just miss the old compartment trains and old ICE design and layout.
You wrote that you did not need a seat reservation but you should book it. But if I start the trip from start point noone would take my seat right? Or someone who bought a seat reservation may seat there?
6:50 The seats are made of genuine leather. You can smell it when they are new, and they get little cracks when they get older. Some animal rights groups are trying to convince DB to replace them and use faux leather.
Traveling to Germany and his upcoming spring. I’d like to do two routes on the ICE, their longest route along with their fastest route. Do you know which two I could take?
Bcs Frankfurt in such a big hub u get mostly delays like the 10 min in this area. But iam impressed for a ~800km long journey to be on time. I mean iam still okay with 10min delay after such a long distance. Even at some routes the train takes just the half time than the car and its funny if people complain the 20min delay. You can drive with ur car 3h more if u want XD
Is it possible that the photo you posted on Twitter was another train than this one? 🤔 There you had the ICE "Osnabrück", this one seems to be an unnamed one (judging by the power car's number)
If this train can travel well over 200km/h, then I'm confused about the reason that it takes seven hours to complete the 700km journey! It averages to 100km/h which is not all that high speed for a high speed train. Perhaps, because this is not an express train and it takes plenty of time with the stops in between? And it doesn't hit those high speeds because there is no need with this particular run? Price is really good.
Yes the express part of the ICE names is very much subjective lol. Also I made a slight mistake, 695km is the straight line distance, 883km is the 'rail mileage' 🙏🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip OK, that average to 130km/h. Not bad I guess, considering it apparently plenty of stops in between and those few minutes at each stop can add to a couple of hours easily.
@@wkaemena Yes, it comes to around 130km/h average speed. I guess that is good when we consider the train has to stop in between. If there are 20 stops in between and each stop takes 6 minutes, then it comes to 2 hours. Obviously the train does hit high speeds well over 250km/h during the journey, but have to slow down for each stop, curves, etc.
@@ddandrews6472 on many runs the ICE doesn't serve the shortest route. Thus e.g. I remember going from Hamburg Central to Regensburg Central few years ago; I was ready a few hours earlier and simply hopped onto the next ICE heading south, but although it left an hour earlier than the ICE I originally planned to take, it would have arrived more than an hour later for going throughout the entire Ruhr metro area instead of going the shorter and quicker route further east. As you pointed out the number of stops in between play quite a role as well. Also depends on if the train runs on seperate high speed tracks or mixed service tracks; If they're unlucky to have a slower category train ahead which they might not be able to overtake it will go the same speed for quite a while
Please come in asia,,and review china & Japan bullet train,,then compare with tgv,,ice,Frecciarossa .I want know witch is best bullet train,,, euro or asian .
Strangely enough when I worked in Germany in the late 70,s early 80,s you could set your watch with the punctuality of the ice trains and like you were saying the last time I was in Germany a few years ago the ice trains were both delayed and one by nearly an hour but the regional express trains were on time, the next time I’m over on holiday I’m going to get a sleeper train probably from Hamburg to where? I’ll decide a couple of weeks before I go and see which route gives us the best bargains, great post really enjoying them and looking forward to the next one
@@NonstopEurotrip The problem that both CEOs and the government are more focused on cars than on trains. The genius that is Ronald Pofalla (former CEO of the DB company) decided to make the DB more profitable so he REMOVED MORE THAN 1000 TRACK SWITCHES. That is not a joke. He removed thousands of kilometers of bypass rail lines, and fired thousands of staff which are still missing today. You are not living in Germany if you don‘t get ads to work at Deutsche Bahn atleast twice a week. The most genius idea he had though was what he called „Pofalla-Wende“ translating to „Pofalla-Turn“. This happens when a train is severely delayed. The train will just stop at the next station, the train will be assigned another route, all passengers have to disembark because of a fake Technical Failure or something, and at stations the train was supposed to stop the same made up excuse will play over the announcements. Another thing DB likes to do is wait to repair technical damage. There is a law that the government has to pay for the repair something if is is broken to a certain point, meaning DB just waits until it is damaged enough for them not needing to pay the cost of fixing it. Also, we always had Transport Ministers that had something to do with the automobile industry, so they always got more money and funds. Thankfully this is going to change (hopefully) with a new government of the Social Democrat party, the Liberal-Democratic party and the Green Party, meaning that the Conservative party isn‘t governing right now.
already small incidents can have quite a far reaching impact with delays and rail traffic jams; Now imagine a larger incident holding up traffic at one spot, it might affect rail traffic hundreds of miles far away

I have only travelled on the ICE1 so can’t comment on more modern versions, so cannot compare but given the general trend is now on lighter more fuel efficient trains I can see how the older trains are sturdier more comfortable and ride better also the seats tend to be better padded and certainly more comfortable.
In a crash, is definitely better to be on the new one tho!
Fantastic video. 8 euros for that lol. Anyways I love the ICE1 and I look forward to using them after the current refurbishment programme
Absolutely mate 😄
695 km is the air-line distance. The rail-distance is a lot higher. The normal full price is 232 €, but cheaper if you book in advance.(good luck on holydays).
Yeah not sure what happened there, rail mileage is 883km/549mi, thanks!
@@NonstopEurotrip That makes my calculation comparing with LNER a bit different but still, at 75 mph still a good bit slower than LNER. Much more comfortable than LNER though. LUMO have better seating I believe.
Loved the look of the first class seemed like a bargain 👍👍🇦🇺
Absolutely is 😁
I'm pleased to se that in Swetland they use dat green tam..dat is made in my country my town..more exacly Arad Romania at Factory of trams Arad. We have many I hole country.. I don't known they go iven in Swetland 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Ah excellent 😊
Hope DB would keep this ICE -1 fleet running more years..
Another 10 years I believe 😀
Enjoyed it lad, keep up tha good work :-)
Thank you ☺️
Muy buen video, me gustan mucho los trenes, y tus videos contienen mucha información importante,
Saludos, desde Buenos Aires, Argentina
Que tanto, ¡me alegro de que lo haya disfrutado!
First high speed train was first class from Frankfurt to Zurich. We were in a separate compartment by ourselves. A wonderful experience.
Sounds amazing!! 😃
The 2 is the only ICE I've not been on, yet!
@@NonstopEurotrip well you need to try them. The seating is slightly different than the others. I definitely wasn't unhappy with the comfort, and it was definitely superior to the ICE 3.
Was thinking how good those 1st class compartments would be for a seven hour poker tournament!
As long as it's Texas hold'em 😃👍🏻
Very enjoyable video. I think I would pay the extra for the 1st class ticket.
Absolutely Paul 😄
2nd class is still very comfortable. I think 1st class on ICE is very much worth it if the difference isn't too big on the ticket selection (
Excellent as always you never fail.
Thank you John! 🙏🏻
One second camera in the cabine from the train was be better, just a tip. i have the Hero 6 gopro Black. thanks for the nice video.greetz:Peer.
Thanks 👍🏻
They probably just don't have catering services in Switzerland, and Karlsruhe was the first stop on the line where the train could actually get replenished. It might even be an agreement with the Swiss railways so that people are encouraged to spend their money on breakfast before leaving while still in Switzerland.
yeah they dont have a storage maybe in switzerland and get restocked in germany only or it was too early?
@@SternenruferinPatchouli1 probably they don't have storage here. The morning Railjet out of Budapest often gets stocked in Vienna.
I was thinking this but they made it sound like it was an unusual occurrence. Anyway never mind! 👍🏻
They restock in Basel Bad BHF normaly
Basel Badischer Bahnhof belongs to the German Railways, despite being in Switzerland so I doubt there is such an agreement.
Despite the delay of 10 min in Frankfurt the arrival in Berlin was bang on time
Absolutely 🤗
Aproaching and leaving ICEs to and from Frankfurt main station often collect delays because in this massive junction infrastructure is so overloaded that trains often have to wait until they can join the station and leave again. 10 minutes delay is a standard there.
Great video mate!
Thanks a lot!
Very nice 👍 Train and wonderful journey ❣️
Thank you 😊
Great trip Max 👍🏻.
Thanks Rob, I'm with you on the First Class 😂🍾
I'm a tram and I approve this video!! :D
Thanks Mr.Tram! 🚃
Great review Max!! Love the faux leather sears and wood finishes....very club like and relaxing. Curious why first class pays for food? First class in the US usually includes food.
😀😀😀♥️
Thanks Scott! All First Class long-distance services here used to include food, but now it seems only the UK, and Spain remain (some Italian too!) 👍🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip Thanks Max.
@@mstrmren Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the ride !!!

2:22 - this is so cool.
Ikr 😍
Excellent trip report ! I would travel first class as I'm 6'6"... :):):)
Absolutely yes 😁
6‘6‘ fits easily in 2nd class too
The food in the dining car is always a bit more expensive, but I've never had a bad meal on the train. That was already very good in the days of the Deutsche Bundesbahn.
Eastern European dining cars are very well priced, and much better quality food 😊
Agreed!!
Enjoy your trip!
Hello, i am a big fan even though i just subscribed. May i know what software do you use for editing? Thank you! Great video 😁
I use HitFilm 👍🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip thank you so much! 😉
Oh dear, not good!
Fair enough 😁
Ice 1 is my favourite train
Not a class 390 😆
I'm curious whether the train driver actually remembered to stop at Wolfsburg Hbf...
Yeah you never know 😁. Btw as the train was clearly still on the Hanover-Würzburg high-speed line, Hildesheim was conspicuously missing from the stop list...
Honestly don't know 😅
One of my best friends moved to Berlin a couple of years ago. I usually take this exact ICE line from Karlsruhe to Berlin when I visit him. With a little planning you can get decent prices for first class and enjoy the ride even more. Haven't visited him since they started running ICE4s on this line. Pandemic and stuff... :)
Can't wait for the ICE 3 Video. Will you review Class 403/6 separately to Class 407? The missing lounge behind the driver in 407 is a real shame btw.
I've done both before, but in older videos. I Have a new 406 video coming later this year 😎🇩🇪
It makes me laugh, the kind of train we get in the UK for the equivalent of €43.90 is a joke.
@@TheTouristLine All of northern's pacers were removed from service in November 2020
I prefer the open compartments, unless travelling in a group ..
You wrote that you did not need a seat reservation but you should book it. But if I start the trip from start point noone would take my seat right? Or someone who bought a seat reservation may seat there?
Yes. If you don't reserve a seat and it's fully booked, you'll be standing if there are no free seats
@@NonstopEurotrip have you ever thought about taking all these tips in one video or one text?
@@Grzegorz_Grzeg one day, maybe!
Nice video can you ride ice 2 train in Germany 🇩🇪 👍
It's the only ICE I haven't been on!
Great trip. Also this is very long distance trip for ICE.
6 hours also from Kaiserslautern to Berlin
One of the longest, yes 👍🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip Zürich Hamburg should be longest, same train for ~8h
Great👍👍👍😊
Thank you 🙏🏻
6:50 The seats are made of genuine leather. You can smell it when they are new, and they get little cracks when they get older.
Some animal rights groups are trying to convince DB to replace them and use faux leather.
That's not what I read online 🤷🏻♂️
Wonderful
Thank you!!
Which is better, car or train for this journey, I've been on both but 30 years ago? But I've only tried the train recently.
100% train!!
I've had currywurst before 8am. Can confirm it's just fine at any time.
Ah excellent, thanks 😂😂😂
Nice trip. ICE ICE Baby...Worth the upgrade to 1st Class?
I think so, yes 😍
Not effizient, sometimes tickets are too expensive and over crowded, and often late!😤😎
Usually late 🤠
Waw excellent video
Thanks Arif 🙏🏻
Traveling to Germany and his upcoming spring. I’d like to do two routes on the ICE, their longest route along with their fastest route. Do you know which two I could take?
This is the longest and the ICE3 from Frankfurt to Paris is the fastest at 320kmh (but only in France)
@@NonstopEurotrip wouldnt the ICE 73 from Kiel to Zurich with 8:48h be longer?
Bcs Frankfurt in such a big hub u get mostly delays like the 10 min in this area. But iam impressed for a ~800km long journey to be on time. I mean iam still okay with 10min delay after such a long distance. Even at some routes the train takes just the half time than the car and its funny if people complain the 20min delay. You can drive with ur car 3h more if u want XD
I was very impressed overall 😌
Awesome 👍👍👍👍
Thank you ☺️
Hi I will be taking ICE 1 this Sunday from Frankfurt Flughafen with a rather large luggage, where would be the best seat you recommend?
Near to the either end of the coaches
Is it your first time in FRA or on the ICE?
Is it possible that the photo you posted on Twitter was another train than this one? 🤔
There you had the ICE "Osnabrück", this one seems to be an unnamed one (judging by the power car's number)
Eagle eyes 👀😉 The one on the other platform was a better photo 😂
A very classy looking trainset compared to Amtrak in the USA..
16:06, just fyi, the ICE 4 is DB's flagship train, not the ICE 3
Actually it's now the ICE3 DB408
The unrealistic part of this trip was that the train departed on time😭
And nearly arrived on time lol
7 hours for 700 kilometers isn't really high speed for me. Sucks that we don't have an actual high speed network.
It's those pesky stops 😂
The distance from basel to Berlin via Frankfurt Braunschweig is 906 km
Also depends on if the train runs on seperate high speed tracks or mixed service tracks; If they're unlucky to have a slower category train ahead which they might not be able to overtake it will go the same speed for quite a while
How many restaurant cars exist in an ICE1 Train? Which car(s) is usually the restaurant?
Yes, they all have one in-between first and second classes

Strangely enough when I worked in Germany in the late 70,s early 80,s you could set your watch with the punctuality of the ice trains and like you were saying the last time I was in Germany a few years ago the ice trains were both delayed and one by nearly an hour but the regional express trains were on time, the next time I’m over on holiday I’m going to get a sleeper train probably from Hamburg to where? I’ll decide a couple of weeks before I go and see which route gives us the best bargains, great post really enjoying them and looking forward to the next one
Yeah they've gone downhill from past, so I hear..sounds like you're planning a nice adventure ☺️
Is it possible to book that private cab for yourself only 9:06 ?
Yes, if you buy all 4 seats 😂
