One of my favourites songs at the moment! I've been physically abused as a child, became addicted and homeless. Worked my ass off and am now well on the way to graduate in neuroscience. After my graduation I plan on moving to New Zealand and live closer to nature (no space for that in The Netherlands). Because of that I am learning Te Reo on the side and understand most of the lyrics in this song. This song keeps me going whenever everything feels as to much of a burden, it keeps my eyes on the prize and gives me the strength to keep moving forward. ❤
As being maori, I can understand it all, I'm very proud to be maori, especially because its a beautiful language and, our island is beautiful. He Maori ahau, e mārama ana ahau ki te katoa, e tino whakakake ana ahau ki te Maori, i te mea he reo ātaahua hoki, he ātaahua hoki to mātau motu.
Such a beautiful language. It reminds me of our native language Alefuru from the Island Ceram, for certain words are the same. For example the numbers: rua and rima also means two and five in Alefuru language. And there are more examples. I love listening to your songs. It lifts me up, praising God in your beautiful language. Feels like home to me. God bless. Greetings from a Moluccan to a Maori.
Maori and bahasa/alefuru are indeed very close to eachother. My grandma once told me that my ojang laki said he could always conversate with the mapri that lived near him.

2 days ago a voice coach/singer I follow reviewed this video. This led me to one of the best male singers/vocalist I have heard in a long time. Since then, I have been down the rabbit hole that is Stan Walker. All the way back to 2009. I am in awe of your voice, it literally speaks all the way to my soul. The message you bring through your music is amazing. I have not felt this strongly about an artist since Allen Stone. And as a fellow cancer survivor, to see you flourishing speaks to the your strength. Your new album is so good. I can't wait to see what is next. I am here for it!
I feel silly as a New Zealander (Pākeha) not knowing a lot of Te reō Māori and only wish it was compulsory growing up. I know kids back in the day were smacked for using it, and it saddens me and I apologise on behalf of my European heritage that they did this to Māori and decimated their culture and language instead of being partners in preserving it. I hope we can turn this around and maybe one day we will all be fluent in it. Te reō Māori to me, and I really mean this, is the most beautiful language in the world and a song like this proves it.

Throughout my 22 years as a Kaiako I played many different waiata to the Tamariki from 6 mnth to 5 years. I love the language and because of my mother tongue (Dutch) pronunciation was not too bad either.
