i took several art classes during college and not once did they teach about drawing from nature or how to draw birds, i just learned how to do it in 13 mins, thank you for this
This is the best bird drawing lesson, that made me understand how to draw a bird and simplicity of bird sketching. Thank you so much for the knowledge.
I want to become a birder, and this was really helpful for me. I think I'll have a lot more success in my journaling from now on, so thank you for the video!
I'm doing some research online to learn how to draw birds and I stumbled across your video. Thank you very much for sharing all of those helpful tips. By simplifying the shapes it's so much easier to see how the bird is put together and draws my eye to what is important.
I love this video! So well explained, short but to the point, with so many important details to take in consideration before drawing birds. Nothing was left out! I’m a beginner and I have no problem following this tutorial.
thank you so much, as about 40 years ago a bird in the nature morte in our art school put an end to my childhood's drawers career, now i'm just happy for being able to solve that "bird problem", yesss
This is so helpful! I’m a beginner with watercolors. I’ve struggled to sketch the basic shape of birds for practicing a loose painting style. Birds are great watercolor subjects, but draw…erase…repeat is driving me mad! I’m a grateful new subscriber. 😎
Thank you that was really good educational video how to draw bird . I enjoyed learning as this is the first time I am going to draw birds on my new painting . 😊
FYI this is an older technique of his. For the first line, rather than the general gestural line through the middle, he now recommends you draw the line of its back as the initial line and then "hang the head" (draw a circle) off of the bottom end of that initial back line. He then says to draw a circle for the body in proportion to the head and then the beak line; most of the rest progresses normally from there as in this video. John Muir rules! Watch all of his videos - even though my drawings are not great, it is making me a better birder and I am having a lot of fun getting better.
Thanks for sharing these techniques. I was stuck. I'm doing a comic book and it's called "Bird Brains" it's a comedy of errors, like "The Beverly Hillbillies" or "The Gods Must Be Crazy." or "3's Company". The story is all written, and it's complete, but I needed better artwork. I just slam dunked real crude stick figure birds just to get it done. Now I've got a handle on getting acceptable artwork, and I can move ahead and complete the project, thanks to you. Much obliged, and thanks again, CHEERS!
Thanks for the info. Addresses some things I was thinking about. I will have to think again about mechanical pencils. I have always used regular sketching pencils.
It's interesting that this video is basically what you teach in the "New Bird Drawing" video except that you form the bird's body from the body position line.
I am sad because I do not speak English, only a few words ... I want to understand everything you say! :( I love your video and beautiful drawings of birds and wildflowers. We are friends on Facebook too :) I'll try to draw birds with your help ... Greetings from Chile. (here there are beautiful birds! and natural landscapes) Vilma Oyarzún
The birds near my house are fairly tame and plentiful, you can get into a metre's range without them flying off but they don't stay still for very long, how can I draw when my subject flies off whenever I get into a minute or two of drawing it? Please consider answering my question, thank you.
This would be a great video, but JML's drawing hand is in the way of the viewer's ability to see the drawing he is doing. I am new to you tube drawing videos, but see this problem more often than not!

I've just drawn the most realistic bird I have ever drawn, and all thanks to watching you in this video, thank you so much
It's still helpful 9 years later!! Fast and simple video, helped me to improvise a little for me to learn by myself from now on.

Thanks John. Super advice on building up the structure of the bird. The best approach I've come across. Can't wait to try it out. :-)
The only lesson you will every need to start. You can't go wrong with any of Jack's videos. He is a master artist and instructor.
This is such a great explanation - I learnt so much and cant wait to go and sketch fairy wrens using this information :)

Excellent tip about the placement of the eye relative to the beak!
