The song should be required listening by every student in college who is majoring in the education field and wants to become a teacher. Especially with all the stories in the news about school teachers having inappropriate sexual relationships with students that that they are supposed be be teaching. And then getting put in jail, wasting four years of college earning a degree that they'll never again be able to use because they're now on the sex offender registry list for life. This actually happened to several former teachers in my area, but it happens everywhere. There is a reason why Sting wrote this song for back in late 1970's. Because as a former English teacher himself, there were several of his female students that tried to get with him. Which made going into music a much more appealing career for him. But he was, at least, able to still use his degree in English as a songwriter of many great songs. To any teacher reading this. Take Sting's advice and tell your students not to stand so close to you. You'll be glad you did when you're going home from work every night and not sitting in a jail cell or having your name spread across the news media.
Oh shove a sock in it. For one thing, Sting has said more than once that the song is *not* autobiographical. And like making teachers listen to a song is going to fix something. Hilarious.
I couldn’t agree more, just out of teacher training I was assigned to an all girls finishing school and was groomed and sexually assaulted by a group of 16 year old girls. I was subjected to sordid, depraved and debauched sex acts by the rampant girls, I was too weak and fearful to fight back and this must have continued for multiple terms . Looking back I guess I should have reported it . I only wish I’d heard Stings song beforehand.
It would definitely have been their last; they beat the shit out of each other on a daily basis making “Synchronicity,” I really think it would probably have ended in murder, probably of Sting and/or Stewart Copeland.
From what I remember, the plan was to make a whole album of remakes of their songs. But as usual, the three of them couldn't agree on anything. So out came only one song, this one. And they released a greatest hits album, with only this song not the original.
So glad there aren't people on here going back and forth about which version is better! Here we are, just enjoying this version for what it is...thanks guys!
They're not directly comparable and not meant to be. The original is reggae/rock fusion, this is much more pop rock you would expect to hear in the 80s.
Not Even! Lol. This version Sucks! Should've never been done. Stewart's incredible drums aren't even used. The electronic drums and even the beat Destroy the song! Only 2/3 of The Police are playing on this. Stupid! "More Polished" is Not a good thing
The way this song sound is so nostalgic. Perfect for a sunday afternoon as rain falls and you watch it from your house window. Or also coming from the beach alone in your car as the sun sets over the sea.
Rarely does a remake of an original song, even if done by the band who wrote the original, turn out better than the original. This version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" is the exception to the rule. This version is far superior.
Drake Santiago You are 100% correct. This is a trillion times better, replacing the cheesy happy arrangement with a darker, edgier, opulent and brooding arrangement.
Tripp1993 There was no cheesy happy thing. It's punk music showing the frustration of a person keeping themselves away from a little girl. If anything the ska and sad (not happy) sound generated the frustration of that person perfectly. This remake is way too mellow for a person who wants to push back an underage girl. The verse sounds gorgeous, the transition from verse to chorus is pretty ugly though.
I saw the police in 1982 at the US festival and I was right at the fence in the front row there was almost 200 thousand people that day and they rocked these kinds of bands will never happen again but the music still lives on.
"Because drummer Stewart Copeland had broken his collarbone and was unable to drum, he opted to use his Fairlight CMI to program the drum track for the single, while singer/bassist Sting pushed to use the drums on his Synclavier instead. The group's engineer found the Synclavier's programming interface difficult; it ended up taking him two days to complete the task. Copeland ultimately finished the drum programming and claimed that the Fairlight's then-legendary "Page R" (the device's sequencing page) saved his life and put him on the map as a composer. In a Qantas inflight radio program named "Reeling in the Years", Copeland was quoted as saying that the argument over Synclavier versus Fairlight drums was "the straw that broke the camel's back," and that this led to the group's unravelling."
I consider this song version has the whole new wave spirit wrapped into its DNA chain !! Listened firstly in 1986 yet blowing my brains out in 2022 Many thanks for uploading!!
Having graduated in '86, this song is heartbreaking to me. So ironic having been such a huge Police fan and listening to it and looking back now makes me realize just how much girls really didn't ever give a shit about us
I totally agree this version is brilliant i am still big fan of the police they wir my favourites in late 70's and 80's sting has done brilliant stuff ever since .
The Copeland drums are amazing in this song (the introduction is perfect), Sting voice and also Andy guitar. This is the masterpiece of Police, i don't understand why this version is so underrated
Stings voice is timeless. I never tire of hearing it. In fact its the only thing that keeps me coming back (its certainly not some of the lyrics, 'do do do, da da da' etc hehe
The lyrics are a bit different, in the part "he starts to shake, he starts to cough just like the old man in that book by Nabakov", in the '86 version he says "he starts to shake, he starts to cough just like the man old in that FAMOUS book by Nabakov"
first time i lising to sting & the police was back in 89 with my primos from cd. juarez mx. i love it right now im [36 years old] and still like the police
Thank you! I thought I was the only one. I like the faster chorus as it makes it sound more urgent that you need to move away from Sting instead of like in the '86 version where it gives the vibe of "if you get a minute, please move away from me."
Better than the original version, so much more polished, brilliant ! Was Only A 14 year Old Teen Back then........Now Im 45.....The Years Just Flew Pass.
This is not a song. It's a masterpiece.
áa
agree
Absolutely agree!
I wanna wish a Happy early 72nd Birthday to Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner Sting!!!! Don’t Stand So Close To Me Sting!!!!

The original was good. This is pure shit.
this version is way more emotional! :)
I've always thought the exact same thing.
This Is the version for those lyrics... The original seems like a sweet Sixteen party
Beautiful, this is the best version.
I dont know if this is the best version. Anyway I like this version
Depois de every breath está eh a melhor balada deste grupo inglês.

that's a weirdo reply....?

Very rarely does a remix version sound better than the original.....This is one of the rare songs that does.
Most of the time remix is superior
Very often does a remix version sound better than the original.
I guess it depends on the music genre.
trance/house is filled with better remixes,
Best version. 🎧😎
If the Police released one more album in 1986, it would've been awesome!!! This version proves it!
It would definitely have been their last; they beat the shit out of each other on a daily basis making “Synchronicity,” I really think it would probably have ended in murder, probably of Sting and/or Stewart Copeland.

this is one of the greatest pop/rock songs ever. every component compliments perfectly.
one of the best police songs...so much angst... and this version delivers the emotion so effectively
O som dessa bateria!!!! Minha música favorita deles, de longe. Uma marca, a essência da década de 80!!!!👏👏👏👏
Década de 80, só quem viveu sabe. ❤
The Police pra quem tem bom gosto!!👏👏👏
Eu tenho...🙋♀️
Gosto da batida do The Police, são arranjos simples e bonito de se ouvir
muito bons mesmo
I like both versions, but I must to agree with all coments here: 86 version is more visceral and raises my skin!
Great song and lyrics... timeless
Yes
I saw the police in 1982 at the US festival and I was right at the fence in the front row there was almost 200 thousand people that day and they rocked these kinds of bands will never happen again but the music still lives on.
It happens every single year. You're just out of touch
Awesome 🔊 track. The Police, Greatest band of all time.

Riding on my 68 Impala, listening this 86 song... priceless

Verdade mas essa ficou ótima também.

Very cool song. Love this version.

Best version of this tough subject,
yet genius song ever!
At last I found this version!! I see more soul in this one. And the clock at the beginning... great!!! 😽😽
What a great song, I love it! I put it into my "Shellshocked Radio - Recommendations" List: th-cam.com/video/wU9MWDKTjfg/w-d-xo.html Very well done!

I’m listening to The Police Don’t Stand So Close To Me 1986 late March 2024
4:49
uma das melhores bandas que conheço dos anos oitenta
Um mix incrível de sons metálicos essa guitarra, e o baixo tbm.
Fantástico.
best band of the 1980s - and yes, I miss them badly. As badly as I miss those years.
Having graduated in '86, this song is heartbreaking to me. So ironic having been such a huge Police fan and listening to it and looking back now makes me realize just how much girls really didn't ever give a shit about us
Human pair bonding is the curse of my life
85 graduate and you're wrong we liked y'all......
I totally agree this version is brilliant i am still big fan of the police they wir my favourites in late 70's and 80's sting has done brilliant stuff ever since .
Minha versão preferida
Eu amo essa música !!!!
Sempre ouvi as 2 versões mas nunca cheguei a conclusão qual a melhor .
Sting was also a teacher so it may be fictionally autobiographical.
Was Only A 14 year Old Teen Back then........Now Im 45.....The Years Just Flew Pass.
I'm french, I feel excatly the same emotion
Ain't that the truth.
Oh
This song is amazing!

I love this versión
Excelente video de The Police
So perfect this song♡
Spotify vc tinha uma missão: ter essa versão da música!😭
Sim 😭
The Copeland drums are amazing in this song (the introduction is perfect), Sting voice and also Andy guitar. This is the masterpiece of Police, i don't understand why this version is so underrated
Well the drums are actually programmed because Copeland had a broken collarbone at the time of the recorder.
@@ronnydietrich7976 Yes, but even the way Copeland programmed the synthesizer is amazing, it fits perfectly, without the tecnology of nowadays
Couldnt agree more!
Because it s the end for police I think
Agree it like a new song and amazing!
I actually like this version better than the original.
Jonny Boy +1
Jonny Boy So much better Jonny,so much better!!
It's more powerfull!

Because it is better.
..bellissima versione...finalmente, raggiunta la maturità musicale ,non potevano che sfornare un tale capolavoro..
Love this song....remembered when it first came out. Great memories for sure.
Thanks for sharing
A banda the police
Sem dúvida nenhuma e uma das mulheres em todos os tempos. Sting. Andy samers .Stuart cuperland.
Stings voice is timeless. I never tire of hearing it. In fact its the only thing that keeps me coming back (its certainly not some of the lyrics, 'do do do, da da da' etc hehe
Just a pure 80's sound here. Timewarp.

Great classic song.
always loved this the best
Just watched Lolita (1962 film) today on TCM good movie!
The lyrics are a bit different, in the part "he starts to shake, he starts to cough just like the old man in that book by Nabakov", in the '86 version he says "he starts to shake, he starts to cough just like the man old in that FAMOUS book by Nabakov"
Been searching this version for ages.. top notch in every way.
Remember some 80 's years thanks
Na minha opnião a melhor do The Police

So many memories of this song, of driving a moped with no licence, playing vinyl and drinking Thunderbirds!!
Funny how this later version sounds so 80s and dated, yet the original sounds timeless.
I love this version of "don't stand so close to me"
Escutava esta versão no passat 88 do meu pai.. fita K7!
Eu tambem: o rádio era um Los Angeles VI... Passat Pointer 1988
I LOVE THIS VERSION *---* !!!!!!!!
