Very nice setup. You you have great tech skills. One tip for anyone trying this. The Seasnake 24lb is about 10 pounds lighter. That with a 50ah lithium will get you about 4 hours of fun without much added weight and same max speed. I have both the seasnake and Newport motors for my kayak.
Nice set up. I converted a couple kayaks to boats by making a mount at the very back with the same trolling motor. I used the same battery too! I noticed you got the boat registration, which people need to remember. Was wondering how that would work on a SUP, but I see you make a "plaque" of sorts. Great idea.
@@DoItYourselfDad That makes sense. I heard you say that, but didn't see how secure you had it for it to make sense until I rewound after commenting. Nice build and with one arm. The determination :-)
You seem to be the right guy to ask this. I want to build a drop in rowing seat and paddle stand for use in my Kayake, Jon Boat and Paddle Board. I've seen them on line for crazy money. These companies think if you like to row, you graduated from an Ivy League school and you made of money. I don't use or even have a boat motor of any kind and at my age, the exercise is badly needed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hey, make a video!
Nice, I was thinking to create a bicycle addon but this is better. Once concern though, the motor next to a paddle board does feel a bit unsave. One big wave, you fall, and I recon the toe or gingercutter 2000(tm) does it's work. Is this a valid concern?
Hi, thanks for the video. How do you keep the paddle board going straight? On mine, it keeps going to the left and in circles...I mount my trolling motor on the right side.
With the motor mounted closer to the center (front to back) it tends to want to turn. What I noticed was you actually have to counter steer a bit to keep it straight (steering into the turn) due to where the motor is placed. Also, once up to speed the skeg/fin starts working more efficiently and keeping it straight.
@DoItYourselfDad I've been searching & couldn't find much answers but would you know the cost of CA dmv fees? I plan to do just about the exact setup you have. Ty!
I don’t remember exactly what I paid but it was under $50 for two year tags. You will be the certificate of origin for the kayak/ paddleboard when you go to the DMV. I went through AAA to do mine.
Here are the D Rings: amzn.to/3PwoXAQ you'll also need vinyl cement which you can also get on Amazon but will probably be cheaper at your local hardware store.
Flipped the video around in editing…. It’s a way to make it look like I’m filming with more than one camera. Hindsight 20/20, it’s confusing with this video.
Tested that out in shallow waters, had a foot strap hooked to the center carry handle. It wouldn’t have been fun to remount, but doable. Plus, we were with a group and never more than 50 yards from shore.
One more thing. If that guy falls off , how is going to get back on that SUP in open water with that arm brace? Not my business really but if I was out on the water with my kids I would want to help them if they got in trouble vs the other way around.
My kids a teenager, a surfer, a scuba diver etc etc…. and we never go out alone. I was the only one on camera, but not the only one out on the water. I was wearing a pfd and tried remounting onto it before going out. No one was at any risk.
now you need to register it and get a boaters card haha... good ol California for you.. anything motorized on water will need to be registered to dmv... its only like maybe 30 to 50 bucks i think for small crafts like this ... kinda dumb but that's the rules here lol ... i launch my inflatable boat with a 55 pound thrust 12v with a 100ah lifepO4 battery i can go easy 14 miles if i just go slow.. i launch south chula vista.... i recommend a lifep04 battery it will last you 15+ years ... also to get a your time usage you need to get a amp meter.. its easy to do.. all you need to do is a little division... so your battery is 30ah and say your motor is pulling 10amps at full power .. you just put a amp meter clamp over negative wire and it will show you how much amps its pulling.. so if it says 10amps at full power you divide your battery capacity 30ah to 10amps of it pulling at full power and you get 3 hours of use non stop at full lock power.. might get little under all depends on current wind weight ect... just a good guess how long it will last.. so if you get a 100ah lifep04 battery and your motor is pulling max 10 amps (100ah divide by 10amps) = 10 hours of full power non stop till the battery BMS shuts you off … i say give it 8 and a half just to be on the safe side to get back but I’m not sure you will be in the water for more then 8 hours lol ..
Last year on a lake day with my friends I had 3 paddle boards and 2 kyacks in my truck and took off and landed drones from my oversized 16ft paddle board so I had a whole Carrier strike group also one of my friends had a fish finder on his kyack and all his fishing gear so we even had anti submarine capabilities too😂
FYI ... In some states you could get busted for this . Even a trolling motor on a inflatable requires a registration sticker . I like the idea but there are stealthier easier solutions that don't even require the DIY if you look a little more.
Again, watch the video. Not only do I know the battery, I show wiring it up, with a safety switch. There’s an entire shopping list with links in the description.
Classic Toyota Supra in the background! I have an 83 Celica GTS, pop up headlights and the 22R motor - it's really cool too!
Nice!!

Awesome video, I just ordered a trolling motor and I'm going to try this!
Happy boating!
How did it work for you?

technically you may need it but you're going so slow with that motor, I doubt anyone would care.
Nice! I've run a Bixpy on my Gili Manta for awhile. I just got the parts needed to run a troller also.
love it
That's awesome. Do you think it'll be better if the battery box just floated with you towing it?
I love this
Definitely wanna try it out
I’m building mine. Should have mounted the connectors to the side of the box then the lid won’t have any effect.
do you got to register that sup if you do this in cali?
Yes, in CA, and in most states you do.
I Love this Idea👍
Wow! This Vlog almost appears as if you are switching arms.
Get better soon!
I’m healing up! Thanks, yeah I played a bit with mirroring some of the shots, didn’t think about that when I was editing!
Marine Battery boxes have slots thermoformwd into them for securing with straps. Just a place and wratcher deal.
I chose not to use a marine battery box because I wanted a sealed box in case i flipped
@@DoItYourselfDad That makes sense. I heard you say that, but didn't see how secure you had it for it to make sense until I rewound after commenting. Nice build and with one arm. The determination :-)
@@DoItYourselfDad Also, I appreciated that you felt guilty cutting into a pelican box. They are nice cases
How do you register a paddle board with a motor on it? Does the board come with a title and you take that to the DMV or is it much more complicated?
Where I live, all I need is a certificate of origin, should come with most paddle boards and kayaks. $25 later and it’s registered for two years.
@DoItYourselfDad I tried to register mine and they said they HIN was more than 12 digits so they wouldn't. Florida here. Is your HIN 12 digits?
I LIKE IT !!
Can u post the size of the water proof box? The link for it doesn’t work anymore. One recommendation would be to sever the ground wire.
Pretty cool

make this board longer, connect these two sups, leave the engine in the middle and you have a catamaran ;)
Nice, I was thinking to create a bicycle addon but this is better. Once concern though, the motor next to a paddle board does feel a bit unsave. One big wave, you fall, and I recon the toe or gingercutter 2000(tm) does it's work. Is this a valid concern?
I have a Bixby motor that I highly recommend. Very similar
I was wondering since you added a trolling motor to your SUP.. do you have to get it registered?
Depending on your state you may have to. Where I’m at I had to.
Hi, thanks for the video.

Mount it a far forward so it pulls instead of pushes due to being off-center
That’s cool
Nice
If you don't mind me asking. Did you have to register the motor or paddle board with the dmv in order to run it in any body of water?
In my state yes, I had to register it.
Cool setup! Does this need to be registered if in CA?
Technically yes

Thanks. Do you have that link to the mounting hooks you can glue on to a SUP that doesn't have any hooks build in?
Here are the D Rings: amzn.to/3PwoXAQ you'll also need vinyl cement which you can also get on Amazon but will probably be cheaper at your local hardware store.
How deep does the motor sit in the water? I would like to use this to go into shallow water to fish.
These motors you can actually adjust how deep they sit in the water, I have the prop sitting just below the hull of the board
Are u able to steer/turn without a paddle?
Yes, although since the motor is mounted midway up the hull the tiller behaves opposite to the way it would if it was mounted on the stern.
OMG the guy with the sign that took you out. Terrible 😞
Great video thanks
Hello loved the video, but I don’t see the link for the d-rings , do you have a link for them ?
Thank you again
Pardon me but I was just wondering why your brace switches from left to right arm???

Preatty cool! How is the weight balance on water ?
Not too bad, I just shifted my weight a little bit further forward.
Where in San diego did you launched? Thanks
Paradise point
Time to try some rc props on it
I was digging those props Peter Sripol 3D printed for his trolling motors.
@@DoItYourselfDad check out tech ingredients channel, he has a whole video on the subject.
Just looked though the channel, bummed I hadn’t found it sooner! Thanks!

Do you still have a link for the D rings?
amzn.to/3V2TQjb
Hi, do you have a link for the SUP d rings please?
Amazon
Have you tried over-volting the motor and running it at 24v?
I havn't, though we may when we install it on the larger kayak.
What is the plan if you fall into the water?
Tested that out in shallow waters, had a foot strap hooked to the center carry handle. It wouldn’t have been fun to remount, but doable.
Plus, we were with a group and never more than 50 yards from shore.
How long does the battery last?
Is the L silent in solder in US pronunciation?
Yup
How do you mount the wood board to your isup?
I used the D rings on the paddleboard

i launch my inflatable boat with a 55 pound thrust 12v with a 100ah lifepO4 battery i can go easy 14 miles if i just go slow.. i launch south chula vista.... i recommend a lifep04 battery it will last you 15+ years ...
also to get a your time usage you need to get a amp meter.. its easy to do.. all you need to do is a little division...
so your battery is 30ah and say your motor is pulling 10amps at full power .. you just put a amp meter clamp over negative wire and it will show you how much amps its pulling.. so if it says 10amps at full power you divide your battery capacity 30ah to 10amps of it pulling at full power and you get 3 hours of use non stop at full lock power.. might get little under all depends on current wind weight ect... just a good guess how long it will last.. so if you get a 100ah lifep04 battery and your motor is pulling max 10 amps (100ah divide by 10amps) = 10 hours of full power non stop till the battery BMS shuts you off … i say give it 8 and a half just to be on the safe side to get back but I’m not sure you will be in the water for more then 8 hours lol ..
Why is there over a minute of blank screen at the end of the video?
No idea, it’s not like that on the video I uploaded. I’ll have to see if I can fix that on the TH-cam editor. Thanks for the heads up!
