Great video, thank you. I would love to see a comparison between Jpeg. vs HEIF.

Neat! I Use IEDT to view RAW files, never thought about the HEIF path, great idea.

I switched to HEIF on day 1 and was amazed how much room the format still leaves for editing in LR. On M1 Macs, you won't have any issues. The format has been available since the iPhone X, so it's quite common.

Thank you for sharing. I never knew about this setting. Is it a hassle? I will find out. Still its good to know your options.

HEIF 4:2:2 gives you 10-bit colour which, while a great improvement over 8-bit in JPG, is nothing like the colour space you get in RAW, which is 14-bit.
HEIF is also compressed using lossy compression and you loose lots of fine detail.
If you shoot in JPG or HEIF, you are leaving lots of quality behind. If you want the best quality (the reason for your video), then shoot in lossless compressed RAW.

I do say in the video, "if you don't want to edit Raw Images". But you make a very good point!

Helpful content, clearly presented. IMO, new format adoptions take time and folks generally don’t like to go through extra conversion steps to share images w/others who might not appreciate the IQ differences to begin with. Cheers!

Pro tip: if you change the file extension from .HIF to .HEIC, you can import the photos in Apple Photos and sync them with iCloud. There is currently a bug in Apple Photos that prevents syncing edits if the file extension is .HIF. I run a script to automate this and I’m really happy with the 10-bit straight out of camera files.

how do I know that this hassle is worth the trouble? Vlogger should show side by side images between the HEIF and JPEG. Thanks :)

What would be the benefit of using HEIF over RAW? After going form 6400 to 6700 I did a photoshoot and because I knew Lightroom didn't have RAW support yet I shot everything in RAW+JPEG, the images in JPEG were..decent..with the help of the "creative looks" but I wonder how much more editing give a HEIF file would have provided and how close it is to RAW

    • @TheCameraManReviews
      @TheCameraManReviews  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

The benefit would be that you wouldn't need to edit the photo as the colours are baked into the image.
The only downside at the minute is that devices need to catch up with the image file format so that its standard to view it. 😞

This is way more hassel to obtain a usuable enhanced jpeg than shooting in raw. Shooting in jpeg on a decent+
camera is like buying a Ferreri and never taking it beyond first gear. Storage space is no longer an issue with much cheaper and more reliable drives. Edit your photos - pick out the keepers and delete the rest. Do you really need to save every bad photo you've ever taken?

If you're spending £1500 + lens cost on a camera and don't shoot in RAW you've spent too much money.

Yikes, a bit too much trouble, and one ends up saving duplicate images, adding strain to storage

Me coming off of another a6700 video by this channel that ended with “there is no right or wrong setting. Don’t let anyone ever tell you your setting is wrong”:
“Your photos suck because your settings aren’t correct”
