does the chain 3 count as a stich
Yes. Traditionally your beginning chain replaces a stitch at the start of the row. 3ch for a dc, 2ch for a hdc, 1ch for a sc, and so on. It’s very important to think of it as a stitch and avoid either working a second dc in the same stitch, or accidentally skipping over it when you come to the end of the round/turn.
Also: some people do it differently than here. Personally I like to make 2ch very tight at the beginning of the row instead of 3, so I don’t leave large gaps in my pattern. But you can work the turn many different ways
