Everytime I try this I get an error stating "cannot perform operation, one of the objects isn't a path", or something to that degree. Do I have to turn my imported drawing into a path first? I've spent way to many hours trying to get it to cut in half!

Yes everything needs to be a path. Sometimes you have to check and make sure your object is ungrouped. As a good practice I always ungroup an object twice before converting it to a path. I think sometimes there is a glitch in the program and it doesn't always take. Sorry it took so long to get back.
