Ivan Mendez was Angelina's (12y) guitarist in LA in 2018. In an interview with Alan Papier on his TH-cam channel, Ivan told the story of how the cover came about. In a nutshell "Angelina doesn't have a wish list of songs, she decides spontaneously if she likes a song. After hearing this song she says great song and has downloaded the lyrics. Then Ivan played the melody and Angelina says" good but slower, slower , even slower. OK, well, let's start ". Then the cover was recorded in one take, Angelina sang the song here for the first time after her arrangement without rehearsing beforehand.👣 💯 *AJ* 💯👣
Just to clarify: what you said here is a major extrapolation from what Ivan said about how they worked together in general. He didn't actually say those things about "California Dreamin'" in particular. (What he did say specifically about that recording was [to paraphrase…] that he was familiar with the original song beforehand and found it hard to stay within the very slow tempo and fingerpinking playing style that she wanted to begin the song with.)
@@pattylisk6170 Yes, but I'm paraphrasing what he said about this particular recording session. Some of the things Albert said don't even resemble anything that he said in the entire interview. That's why I used the word "extrapolation".
This is just the 1st & only take with no prior rehearsal & done on the fly. Michelle Phillips, the co-writer of this song & sole surviving member of the Momas & Papas, loved this version so much she posted it on their website. I think all these home videos with Ivan Mendez when she was 12 yo, were just "vocal experiments." Angelina is one of a very few "1 & done" vocal artists.
When Angelina was this age, she may have done some California Dreaming in the Norway cold. Turns out, her dream came true!! Love you, and stay safe and warm in LA! ❤❤❤😊😊😊❤❤❤
This is our little genius growing up. Age 12 was full of magic as she reviewed oldie after oldie with Ivan, then rearranging them to her special musical tastes, the genius part and, so I'm told, recording them, as a rule, in one take. We were granted the privilege of sharing with her some of that growing up time with these videos, most of us falling hopelessly in love with the magic of her.
Wonderful reaction, Boudy. No many 12 year old girls can take a classic song from over 55 years ago, which was a light ballad, to turn it into a slow one and melancholy song that fills you with emotions. The musical intelligence with which she reworks the old songs (and not just those), is simply amazing and her ability to exploit only the accompaniment of the simple guitar sound is incredible, I really believe that only this little girl with Donald Ducks on her shirt can do it so easily and harmoniously. The simplicity and ease with which she deals with songs of this type, without preparing them and often recorded on the first or second run (as reported by her guitarists), is simply amazing even more for a 12/13 year old girl, not to mention her vocal range. I love her stripped versions of the classics songs she chooses.💛🧡❤
Great insight into Angelina's musical genius. She did transform the essence of this classic into a sad song. Well, she's not California Dreaming anymore!
She picked a song, he figured out the chords and they did it in one take after he ran through the song by himself unless he really messed it up. His words. Angelina was taught how to read music, deconstruct and rearrange a song in an after school music program where she also took guitar and piano lessons and vocal lessons which only consisted of how to not damage her voice. Some say she took flute and violin lessons also but there is no evidence of her playing either of those.
Quicked heart rate, uneven breath, sweaty eyes and a feeling of joy, all things I experience when listening to this magnificent human being do her thing. Always wiping tears, having to tell myself to breath!
These clips of Angelina singing shorts with her guitarist is some of the best information about AJ and give you a great inside look at just what a musical mind she is
According to Ivan, the guitarist, her instructions to him, after he had practiced it for a few minutes, was just follow me. Most of these videos from this period were first takes. If second takes were needed it was because he messed up. She never required more than one take. There’s a lengthy interview with him out there discussing his work with AJ. It’s quite interesting, and further confirms her musical genius.
Angelina received this great Neumann mic for her 12th Bday (01/10/2018). Shortly after that the family moved to LA. She met Ivan Mendez (guitarist), and together they created some of my favorite Angelina performances. In April/May of that year the two of them produced this Terrific version of "California Dreamin'", and also, "Stay" and "A Million Years Ago". Those 3 creations remain in my Top 20 of all her performances. Don't you just love how this prodigy can rearrange a classic song, sing it masterfully, then, in her Donald Duck shirt with a great big smile, wave bye like the little girl she is. There's a certain sadness to the reality that, now that she's a grown woman, we won't get to see the little girl with that charmiing smile, wave bye again. But it helps soften the sadness knowing we can always go to this link and relive that wonderful ending. Love your Angelina reactions. 💕💕
Angelina is well known for being a one take vocalist. The guitarist, Ivan Mendz, was interviewed by Alan Papier and gave the same story as Angelina's guitarist in Norway, Egil Claussen, who was also interviewed by Alan. They would be invited to Angelina's home and expected to socialize with them for hours, before late in the evening, Angelina would ask the guitarist if he knew a certain song. If he did, then they would begin the camera and record the performance. Each guitarist said, if more than one take was needed, it was usually because he made a mistake. Here is the link to the interview with Ivan Mendez, who only played for Angelina in 2018 in California. th-cam.com/video/2uQyt2T3ayE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YyA8yqJ6b3YuYNhq Here is the link to the interview with Egil Claussen. th-cam.com/video/2o4PPwHl07k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bng8QrXwZi5g0Bfp
Egil also said that even if they did 2 takes they often published the first one (even if Angelina dropped a word or Egil dropped a chord) because the "freshness" of the first take gave it a little extra.
The Mamas and the Papas version is as iconic as any song from the 60’s with their completely distinct harmonies and completely unique sound. It’s not just that Angelina gives us a beautiful new way to love the song. It’s that as a very young child she has the confidence to take it her own way. And it’s haunting and beautiful, showing us the melancholy in the lyrics that the original never tried to do. I LOVE the Mamas and the Papas original. It was an anthem to California and the 60’s, but this is now my favorite version.
I have heard this song many times, but Angelina makes it so different ...giving it new life as you said. Also there were several times the band tried to lead Angelina...the boss and it didn't go well. They got the look from Angelina.😂❤❤❤❤❤
You should watch the interwiew with the guitarist on Alan [Pipers] chanal .. he sais it's often done in one take!!! Greatings from an old Danish Dear and Angel ❤️🇩🇰🌷

This is a nice version but I also love the original where you had four of the best singers of the day harmonizing together wouldn't mind hearing Angelina also doing a speeder version with the Jordanets like she did on her song our time.
Life is to be savored, never rushed. This is a tenet that Angelina seems to incorporate into all her covers. It is such an overarching theme in so much of Angelina’s music that she even slows down her OWN music. If you haven’t reacted to it, check out one of Angelina’s Norway 2022 performances of “Million Miles” - you’ll see exactly what I am talking about. Nice reaction/analysis Boudy. 🌹❤️👣 In life, take your time to smell the roses. It’s Angelina’s way.
@stevenceo Even tho Angelina is one of the few music artists I listen to I do not romanticize everything she does. It's funny, I would repeat your comment to many of her die-hard fans who hear not one deficiency in her performances. A ridiculous position.
Don't you think it takes mad creativity and audacity at the age of 12 to transform such a famous song as AJ does here ? And it's all done on the fly, as she reads the lyrics while she sings. She only did one or two takes for these recordings with this guitarist, Ivan (according to his testimony, see the interview with Alan Papier). An astonishing child musician !
She was always in the lead, even as an 8yo child. Here is the quote from Alan's interview with Ivan that goes along with Boudy's observation: "I’m trying to follow her to the best I can, so because that’s how she works. She’s like okay you follow me and then, you know, you just follow the tempo to get into the groove and then I get lost in the music sometimes." Ivan also said that Angelina always had a very specific idea of how she wanted to interpret a song and let him know exactly how she expected his accompaniment.
I would not call it darkness, haunting perhaps, but to me mostly it gives off a sense of melancholy. The dream she is singing about is over with and she looks back on it with some sadness. The lyrics as whole are a bit depressing and her interpretation fits the story of those lyrics quite well.
May have been just the one take... you should listen to Ivan's interview with Alan Papier where he describes how they would record these songs .. mostly a single take... th-cam.com/video/2uQyt2T3ayE/w-d-xo.html

This kind of slowed down version of this song was already used in a film trailer: two teaser trailers for the 2015 film _San Andreas_ (starring Dwayne Johnson), to be exact. Sung by Sia. (I'm not sure if it was used in the film itself - I haven't seen it - but the song is included in the soundtrack album.) That might be where Angelina actually got the idea to sing it like this in the first place - although Sia's version doesn't feature all those little runs at the end of the lines, nor does it use all those alterations of the melody that make the song sound "even more minor" than the C♯-minor originial (if that makes any sense). Also, the Sia version goes all bombastic after the opening verse, while Angelina keeps it pretty low-key even when the tempo picks up.
I didn't really care for this song by the Mama's and the Papa's when it first came out. But like so many songs AJ covers. She makes it her own and changes it up to make it so much better. I Saw Mama Cass perform this in person. She was impressive. But AJ is just,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,on such a different level.
Another good question, when is her Debut album going to drop? It was supposed to be "In the fall of 2023", but now here it is January of 2024, and no word from either Angelina, or Republic Records.

Great collaboration between Angie and Ivan. She trusts him with all her heart to support the track and he never fails. Great rapport between the two of them with little practice.
Hello, she is wonderful, she sings everything in a special and different way, I love everything about her performances, every cover, every original, it only happens to me with Angelina and The Police, but with Angelina she is super special, she sings with an open heart , it gives value to each word, it's exciting, you know what I'm talking about, it's impossible to describe, thank you so much for the reaction and greetings from Argentina
She's so brilliant in consistently coloring lyrics with the precision and nuance they call for. The lyrics to California Dreaming are nostalgic and melancholy. The unconventional way she articulates the word "grey" for instance, fills that very definition. It's fascinating.
Really loved this reaction and especially your very interesting comments (and humor). Thank the guys in the background for us, too. This was the best reaction and analysis of the performance I have ever seen.
How about they never did it even once before? Ivan said they usually did a song in one take. She would say, “just follow me.” He said if they ever had to do one over, it was because of a mistake he made! Ivan was brilliant at following her and keeping the timing. But mostly he's following along just by the sound of her vocals. It must have taken quite a concentrated effort not to get hypnotized by that voice alone.

Mein Sprichwort für 2024 ist: Langsamer ist schneller und Weniger ist mehr. 👣✨🍀
I love the Persian influence in her ornaments here, from her family background no doubt. So much better than the original.
1 take (no practice), generally unless guitarist made a big enough mistake. Both Ivan Mendez (here) and Egil Clausen were interviewed by Alan Papier discussed how Angelina like to do things in 1 take among other things.. Here are the interviews:

I like the Donald Duck shirt. The only sign that a 12 year old is singing.
You got it!!!
I thought you would comment on the Middle Eastern influence of her singing on this song. Thoughts?
Your reaction is soooo good! And the suggestion is realy, realy on point.
❤❤❤
Excellent. I forgot how good this was.
BTW, this slower version and style was done by Jose Feliciano, decades ago.
Great Reaction 👍🙏👣
Great reaction 🔥🔥🔥♥👣
Why don't you add the house groove to it yourself. You know how it should sound.I would love to hear it here. A great way to promote AJ. Do it, please. 🙂🖖
Hello my friend. You are already cooked enough for return to Argentina. I've seen your work with satisfaction and empathy. I think we are same age.
Ok let´s go:
Song:"La grasa de las capitales"
Band: Seru Giran
Released in 1979
Don't say I didn't warn you.
A huge hug from ARG.
❤
If you see this you would like the interview Ivan the ( guitarist ) does on working with Angelina . I’m not sure of the name but is probably easy to find just putting Ivan and Angelina.
🥰
Like me, could your loss of memory be related to your gray hair? LOL
hahahaha ABSOLUTELY!
If you think about it, she is probably incorporating her arab background because her warbly voice reminds me so much of an arab music influence.
Yes Ivan and Angelina do a great job together but sometimes Ivan gets a little lost in the melody so it still out out
Really doesn't matter how it was played the fact is that The Mamas & the papas did a great job with Angelina Jordan does better job Jeff
Va Aleykum Salam
Diana has a killer version from her appearance on the Masked Singer. In her repertoire now.
realllyyyyyyyyy might just check that one out!
@@ArabManReactsyou gotta do her Dune song first. Its Arrakin language but its the structure of Arabic call to prayer. Call to war in the movie and Power Full.
Hello i am french, please Can you react France Gall ( Ella elle l'a and Babacar)thanks 👍
OMG, I’m so tired of the steady diet of Angelina Jordan. It doesn’t matter anymore how wonderful she sings. There are other artists in the world. Move on!
Wash your mouth out with soap!
sorry , not one of my favorites
