  • Join the journey as Boeing and United Launch Alliance crews rolled #Starliner out of our factory today at NASA's Kennedy Space Center - an important milestone in advance of the #OFT2 launch on May 19.
    Teams transported the spacecraft to the ULA Vertical Integration Facility at Space Launch Complex-41. There, teams stacked Starliner atop the #AtlasV rocket that will carry it on its journey into orbit on its test flight to the International Space Station.

    Let's not get too excited just yet. The valve problem was "fixed" by swapping them out for new ones, but without a thorough understanding of what went wrong at the last attempt. When the government awarded contracts to two separate companies to create a capsule to get to the ISS and back, it made sense because putting all your eggs in one basket was a risky thing to do. However, now that SpaceX has built and successfully flown Crew Dragon, there is no longer any reason to continue with the falied Boeing Starliner. I get that the government wants options, but when you have a number of reuseable Crew Dragons ready to go to orbit, why keep an unviable "option" going?

    • @nathanahubbard1975
      @nathanahubbard1975 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps you hate Boeing, or perhaps you love SpaceX.
      One thing is for sure though; Starliner will be able to boost the orbit of ISS, and the Dragon can't.
      This is especially important now that we aren't exactly getting along so great with the Russians.
      Personally, I'll be glad for us to have not one, but two working crew launch systems that don't depend on the same contractors.

      @chrisantoniou4366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nathanahubbard1975 Who I "hate" or "love" is beside the point. However, given the opportunity, I would bet that SpaceX can produce a spececraft capable of boosting the ISS orbit before Boeing can safely put people on the Starliner.

      @@nathanahubbard1975 No, it's not a bad thing... if it worked. However, goodness knows how many more dollars Boeing is going to demand to get this thing spaceworthy and human rated. Surely commissioning two or three more Crew Dragons would be cheaper, and even if there were issues or failures of the Crew Dragon down the track, they wouldn't be systemic or cause problems with contining to use the Crew Dragon to ferry astronauts to and from the ISS.
