I have the both the SL20SH and the SL30SH. I love the reels they are great for any situation or setup. I use them for long distance casting on the surf and trolling for large inshore fish on my boat. The casting benefits are that they are simple and have a great retrieve rate. With either reel on a 13'3" daiwa ballistic tournament, I can hold heavier braided line and still reach 180 to 200 meter when power casting in the surf with an 8 to 12 ounce weight bait combo. For trolling, I can easily land 40+ inch stripers while the boat is still moving forward. They have a good drag range, and with the right rod, they are perfect for any situation. The biggest benefit is the price of the reels. They are not a low-budget reel, but the simplicity of the design gives you great performance for a reasonable price.
I've owned those same reels for over 20 years. I wash them off with Salt-Away after every trip. They still look and operate like brand new. The old school gear is just very durable. I'm in Southern California by the way. Have tuna up to 45 pounds, Yellowtail, mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), plenty of other fish.
I handed my slosh 20 to my brother over 20 years ago, as I was using my 7HT reels more on the beach. He used it quite a lot over the following years without any issues, and he recently handed it back to me because he can no longer fish properly due to a pysical condition he now has. That reel is still like new, and a joy to behold, so now I have plans to at last use it again myself. When I first bought the reel, I had plans to get a slosh 30 along with it too, but I instead chose the Slosh 50 (I was about to embark on a wrecking trip and wanted a beefy outfit), which in hindsight was a bit overkill; love that big ol' slosh though. Agreed, all these Daiwa reels from the 7HT to the Slosh 50 are well built and very reliable. The old Sealine range too
I've a slosh 30, had it over 12yrs, never had a problem with it. Either fishing from the boat, shore, pier or the rocks, I wouldn't leave home without it. Highly recommend
One of the best reels ever made !! Will never let you down I’ve been using them since the 90s for all my heavy shore rock rough ground work rays Huss conger have 8 of them cannot fault better than 99 percent of the new reels out there superb only rough ground reel I use !
After nearly 25 yrs away from sea boat fishing, I've recently aquired a lovely little Shetland Family 4 which is moored in Strangford Lough NI. I was and still am a coarse/match angler and have always loved Daiwa stuff. So....decided to buy the Slosh 30 for a 12/20lb outfit. First outing coming shortly when it arrives.....keep you posted and keep up the good work mate. Learning loads from your vids on boating and sea angling after being out of it for so long 👍
Really enjoyed your review. Yes the Daiwa SL range is excellent. Perhaps I have limited reference, but switching from a Penn 500 20 years ago felt like I had upgraded my VW Beetle to a S-series BMW. I've always been into rock and surf, so distance casting is pretty important to me. With the Penn 500, I frequently had to discard 100 m or more of new line when an overrun resulted in the line getting caught between frame and spool. With the SL50 and 30, this just did not happen. I think it's the one-piece frame that makes all the difference. Everything just fits together more precisely. Then the frequency of those dreaded overruns decreased quite radically too as in free mode the spool spins so smoothly. My overrun problem disappeared almost completely. Perhaps not ideal for the BIG stuff, but it handled my best catch of 18kg with ease...
been fishing now for 40 years, i have to say the slosh 20 and 30 are brilliant reliable reels. i have three akios shuttle reels and a Penn 525 mag4 and a Penn fathom 15. but i have to say, you can spend loads of money on reels as i have but ? i do not think that you will go wrong with a slosh.. it will be interesting to see if in years to come the modern reels will still be going strong like the slosh reels. in my opinion one of the best reels ever made.
I have an immaculate Daiwa sealine 47LC Great Lakes edition with the line counter. It's from 1995, made in Japan and still works as new. Even the stickers are still In excellent condition.
Hi John, I sure someone has probably mentioned it by now but if you check the gear box of the reel that does not have the stamp on the reel foot it will most like say Japan on it. These were the original ones and are considered better quality. My father has one about 20 or more years and is still smooth as anything and Japan engraved on the gearbox
Cheers. Good straight forward video. I'm just getting back into fishing more often again. I have a silver 6500c3 & green 6500 mag elite. They're both years old but in fantastic condition. I always rinse /dry / occasionally oil etc. Thing is I'm looking for something for rough ground, that can take knocks & has fast retrieval.. I remember the slosh coming out. Glad they still make them. I'll be buying one shortly. Last Daiwa multiplier I had was a ProCaster back in the 80's. Awesome reel.
I've had a Sl20sh for 15 years for off the beach and liked so much forvits durability in that it still works the same as when new that i also bought 2 SL30sh for bogger line capacity .
Had mine for 5 years now won’t beat them had double figure bass on them and 40 pound tope off the shore recently got into boat fishing been taking the slosh30 and been after tope caught loads with them and haven’t missed a heartbeat
Good watch that thanks. I have been pondering over a new reel for some rougher ground fishing for a while and you've just helped me make my mind up. sl30sh it was then. An even added billy bonus is they're half price in Veales, £79!
I have 3 of them and they never ever let me down,, Heaviest fish was a 10kg Garrick and many 6kg plus white steenbras and a 8 kg yellow tail. All in Sunny South Africa
PNW, Oregon to be exact. Just bought a used 30 and would compare it to a Penn Sqall in quality. Casting is great, and no cheesy crank like an Abu junkcia. Great video.
Daiwa brand is always reliable. I used to have Daiwa Baitrunner reels for 5-6 years. I had not a single problem with them. As I moved here in Wales for a while, I'm going to get these multiplier reels and practice casting with them as I'm not used to and birdnests are really nasty and time-consuming.
I agree with almost everything you say buddy, Slosh series are a fantastic value for money bomb proof reel. I used them for years the only negative point for me if used reel up when casting the large downward facing gear box would uncomfortably foul on my knuckle especially with the 20 size being narrower. Other than that great reels. Great vids by the way !
Love it . I've two Slosh 30's, they are brilliant reels, simple as you said, and reliable. They're not in my opinion , out and put casting reels, but with the spool slackened off so there's just a little end float, I can bang a 5 oz lead well over a hundred yards, just thumbing it enough (not always successfully), to prevent bird nesting. Great video.
I love my 20and 30 sh reels I had them for uptideing first of the boat now I fish from the shore excellent reels for the shore I'd recommend them to anyone
I also have a pair of 30's. my tip is if the drag needs to be replaced, fit a carbontex drag washer kit. they are brilliant. also for extra smoothness, there is a plastic bush under the spool adjuster. replace it with a SS ball bearing. on the early 20's they only had 3 bearings. on the bottom of the main gear shaft there is a plastic bush. Again replace it with a SS ball bearing and the other bearing. the extra bearing/s make the reel a lot smoother
I’ve been looking for reviews of these cus I’m thinking about getting a couple for shore fishing and didn’t realise you had a b channel! I’ve been watching the other one avidly since we got out in lockdown! Score on both accounts!
Good review, I actually use the gx2 boat roads with these reels also, have the 12-20lb and the 30lb rod. I've had a slosh 20 for years but it seized on me whilst reeling a fish in. So looking to get two new slosh 30's and then going to take the 20 apart and see what's gone on with it. The reel was sounding rough for a while to be fair.. my fault for not investigating before it failed 😬
You mentioned that you use the slosh 30 with braid for uptiding. What breaking strain of braid would you recommend for uptiding please. Also, do you leave the break blocks in when casting?
been using them for decades, My oldest slosh 20 is 20+ years old, never had a problem, Have 3 slosh 20's and 3 slosh 30s, will never use anything else (except for my 7HT's and Triton Speedmaster)
Hi m8, I love the all daiwa multiplier they are fantastic, I have all range off 7ht, and I am looking forward to buy the slosh 20 I heard lots of review about it and it is very popular here in uk it is fantastic for casting from shore cos it is very lite and very robust for any fish I will buy one definitely.
Hi I have 2 sl30sh one works lovely and the over always over spins as soon as I carst and it bird nest every time any clues to why ti's would be Andy hepl would. Be grateful for
Nice review ... the difference is the reel feet ... older SL's have steel feet held on with rivets ... newer ( not so good 1s) have formed graphite feet ....
Great review, you say a little lightweight for wreck fishing… what reel would you recommend (under £200) that’ll handle that extra weight for large conger etc ?
Another great workshop video John, thank you. My Abu 6500 CS is looking a bit tired now and i am looking for a multiplier reel that is good for casting and suitable to use on a boat, what would you recommend?
Hi John I’ve just bought an ugly stik and a slosh 30... I’ll be fishing from a sib for bass ect What line and leader would you recommend I fill her up with? Love the channel Many thanks
Correct me if i'm wrong here mate but is there not a couple of models above them nowadays? I'm sure Daiwa make the SLX 20SHA and the SLX 30SHA models which are more suited for when the fishing gets heavier. I used both the slosh 20 and 30 for years and I would only ever bench them for a Penn 535. I live in Northumberland and a lot of the rock marks up our way are brutal, the Daiwa slosh is a true work horse that as you've shown in this video can stand the test of time with a bit of TLC. Good video as always mate!
NorthEast Nugget - I couldn’t say mate as I haven’t looked. They may have brought our a newer model but I don’t need any more than what I’ve got. 🤷🏻♂️
I had my slosh20 for ni on 20years and it is the ak47 of reels . Diawa have non in stock right now because they have seemed to of made come back .The good slosh20/30 have Japan on the side of the gear box
On your recommend and if it’s good enough for you I’m sold. I’ll be investing in a pair of SL30’s for my boat fishing. Thank you for another informed insight. 👍🏻
6 months later and the reels have performed beautifully. Rays, Tope and smooth hounds have all been caught with the largest fish so far being a 35lb conger. Thank you for the recommendation. 👍🏻🎣🦈
Hi mate , hope everything is well for you in your neck of the woods .How well do you rate these for heavy beach work, I have read they cast well, in the market for an overhead reel that can handle decent fish off the beach here in Australia .Cheers.
I just bought this reel. Yesterday was my first time out with it. No matter how hard I cranked down on the drag it still let line off easily. What am I doing wrong?
@@johntrotto2216 Thank you! I was using braid and that is exactly what was happening. I put a piece of tape on the spool over the knot and now its good. I appreciate the help.

Didn't like the 20 version much prefure 30. Has more line capacity for fishing rough ground and if you snag and lose line still plenty to keep fishing. 20 cast better but lose a chunk of line and not enuf left on. But I am using 30 lb no leader with rotten bottom of very snaggy ground. But I have now started using penn fathom 2 casting special. Casts a little better and drag little nicer but it's twice the cost for few extra mtr. But 30 still gets used just not as much now.

Yes
