Argus Filch was a Squib and the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since 1973. He patrolled the school corridors with his cat Mrs Norris, trying to catch students breaking the school rules in an attempt to incriminate them.

It takes a lot of bravery to look for a very dangerous wizard as a non-magical person to protect the students.
I strongly believe that Argus Filch just seriously hates how the students are wasting their magical talents. He doesn’t think they deserve it, and they shouldn’t be having fun. He despises them because he believes they’re wasting their gifts by messing around in Hogwarts.
I just can't dislike a man that loves his pet.

It amuses me that despite being a squib for most of the movies he’s the only character in the wizarding world we see with a familiar.

I've never really thought of Filch as a villain. More like humorous. He was always furiously yelling at and chasing Peeves the poltergeist.
Growing up means realizing that Filch had a tough time in life and he needed more Love. 😢 This is for my homie Filch. 🍺

I don't understand how a Squib would be able to keep up with all the requirements of keeping up such a magical place witout magic. Please do a video about this. Did he have some people or cleaners working for him ? He had quite a job to keep up with.

@@surrealfarmFilch also did. Remember the scene in the second book where he was mad at harry for walking into the castle with muddy shoes? Harry said "It's just a little mud!" And Filch replied by saying that just a little mud was another hour of work for him. Which means he cleaned as well.

I like how in the end of Harry Potter 7 pt 2 you can see Filch in the background swooping the floor after the battle, just like "look at the mess I have to clean up after these magic users", I believe he is truely mvp
I think we all agree that if flitch was magical and went to hogwarts when he was younger he would definitely be a hufflepuff he was hard working and devoted to it and was loyal to dumbledore

I feel there must be different levels to “squib” meaning some labeled squib are still magical, just not magical enough to perform spells. Because filch definitely had some magical connection to his cat.

I want to to take Argus to the nasuverse, where he can learn magecraft.
I wonder of its possible for Squibs to brew potions, make wands, or make brooms. Maybe even some really basic divination things like tea leaves or something. I mean, maybe squibs could be great magicians learning that if they cant use real magic, maybe they can be great entertainers using fake magic and tricks.

For all of his awfulness, I would like some sort of peace and redemption for Filch. If he could just find one kind-hearted student who reached out to him, and/or one other person that Mrs. Norris liked (which could start things rolling). That could be the beginning of a new story for Filch.

Well, he survived! He'd need a lot of assistance after the damage done to Hogwarts to get back to normal, so I'm sure a lot of work would need to be done magically to sort things out...maybe he made new friends!?
I like how a lot of the characters are personifications of human emotions i.e. Argus Filch - bitterness, Lucius Malfoy - cruelty, Peter Pettigrew - cowardice etc

Filch was one of those characters who wasn't properly fleshed out by J.K & that's unlike her. People used to call my grandfather grumpy, mean, nasty etc etc; in a way he was all of those things but if you got to know him and if he opened up to you he'd be a different man altogether. I realized he was like that because of all the pre-conceived notions people had about him and all he wanted was friends. A scene where Harry conversed with Filch( maybe in detention) where Filch opened up to him would be good or at least Filch could've helped in the final Hogwarts battle willfully and enthusiastically. No one is only black or white & Jk made Filch to be solely black along with a handful of other characters like Umbridge.

I just realized this...isn't it kind of odd that the Death Eaters allowed a squib to stay at Hogwarts while it was under Voldemort's control?
Not really. Although they hated muggles & mudbloods, there's no mention that they hated squibs since they aren't unaware of the wizarding world like muggles or didn't steal their magic like mudbloods. It's likely that they saw squibs as marginally more valuable than muggles and mudbloods. Even if they didn't like squibs, you have to remember that Filch is different as he knows all the secrets of the castle, something that would be useful to the death eaters. Even after that, Snape was put into the headmaster position and since he knew who Filch was he saw no reason the get rid of him plus there's the fact that he knew all the castle secrets and that they were both part of the Order so he saw value in Filch to some extent in that way as well.
Plus, even if they did hate squibs, I’m sure they’d be amused at him cleaning the castle by hand as opposed to using magic and such

There’s a difference between feelings of supremacy and feelings of hate. Death eaters felt both of these things towards muggle borns but probably only felt supremacy towards squibs
When I was younger, someone (I can't remember who) once told me that Mrs. Norris was in fact Argus Filch's wife and that she had been Transfigured into a cat. I initially believed this but, nowadays, I doubt it being true since a talented witch or wizard could have easily returned her to her original form. Granted, this would be an interesting concept to see.
5:28 So, a mass murderer breaks into the castle and they send the *only* member of staff (or person inside of Hogwarts in general) that cannot use magic to search the three areas that are more spread out and inconvenient to get to than any other by himself? Sounds like an ingenious plan, Dumbledore. Maybe you should have sent him into The Forbidden Forest as well just in case Sirius Black was hiding out in there. Just an idea though.

Mr. Filch was forever on the outside looking in. I get that he held resentment for all students, but I would have thought he'd be even more resentful towards muggleborns because they inherited magic randomly, while he didn't have a drop of it and it was practically his birthright. Even though he wasn't a kind character I still felt bad for him.

How did the twin find out the pass phrase for the marauders map?
Edit: I guess JKR says they just kept on saying stuff until it worked, but that sounds like extreme plot hole filler

Was Filch still at Hogwarts during the alternate reality in Cursed Child where Voldemort won? I mean, Umbridge was Headmistress in that timeline and during her first tenure as Headmistress in OTP, Filch supported her. And would he still have supported her, with the Death Eaters swarming around?

Man, being a squib is the worst thing that can happen to someone. A muggle doesnt even know about the magic so he/she doesn't care. Like for real, I think every squib should live in the muggle world otherwise would be a life filled with sadness and resentfulness

If only he were magically gifted? I can’t say I agree. Yes he was brave, but the tragedy wasn’t that he was not magic the tragedy was that he couldn’t accept himself. I mean most of the human race isn’t magic and they get along fine.
Instead of torturing himself by getting a job constantly being reminded of what he couldn’t have, he couldn’t have done something with his life in the muggle world. Be a doctor, or a writer or a fireman or an astronaut or whatever. The fact he showed bravery in the end shows how he waisted his life.
Self pity never helped anyone.

Also, I'd like to add onto it and throw this theory out.
What if when everyone is gone for the Summer, Filch does his job, but he also dresses up as if he was a student at Hogwarts?
Like...wearing a homemade robe and an old scarf of whichever house he cleans up in and secretly carrying around a hand-carved wand that does nothing, but be there for aesthetic purposes.
Same with carrying a regular broom and pretending that Mrs. Norris is his familiar.
Just living in this illusion, that he was one of them- while also probably indulging in alcohol and other substances, as well, in his downtime, just to keep said illusion going for just a little longer.
As well as taking down and putting away all the talking paintings, covering the talking statues and capturing all the ghosts, so no one will ever know what he does when he's alone.
And at the end of the Summer, he just sits in his room with his cat, still wearing his costume...and he finally cries.
Like...just cries.
Because he knows that come the next day, he'll have to go back to being a Squib, once the REAL Wizards return and be forced to stand by and watch them enjoy the very world that he may live in, but can never truly be a part of...
It's like that one person, who as a child, wanted to have an extraordinary career, when they finally became an adult, but couldn't cut it for legitimate reasons and rather than just move on, still clung to their dreams, taking whatever they could get, that resembled the life they wanted, but couldn't have.
Examples of this concept would be a failed actor working at a dinner theater restaurant, because Hollywood rejected them- or more commonly, a failed athlete being a High School Coach, because they couldn't cut it in the big leagues.
And God forbid they ever have any children, of their own!
Wow...and just, like that, I've made myself sad- and quite possibly anyone who reads this, who ever had an abusive parent who indulged in illegal substances, because of this concept- or WAS one because of it, before finally getting help.
Either way, you know who you are...

I wonder if Argus was as loyal to Umbridge or was he playing her? I am sure Argus was loyal to Dumbledore. Dumbledore gave him a job and treated him with respect. Even if they had opposing views, I am sure they were friends. I think he was a "double agent" like Snape was. Argus Filch is almost as fascinating a character as Snape was. He fought hard against Voldermort during the battle.
I remember when Dumbledore asked Argus to find the Fat Lady when she left her picture. Argus found her in less than 5 seconds. That was amazing! I think Filch was a smart man, even if he did not have any magical powers.
