Tesla should have made this a standard feature. No excuse for this pain in the ass install for this expensive of a vehicle. Great job Chuck on installing this tho!
I agree. I’ve heard of the visibility is one of the biggest drawbacks of the unusual design. A permanent rearview mirror that doesn’t take up any screen space, and is always in the same place, would go a long way to solve this. Besides price, visibility is my number one reluctance to get a cyber truck.
meh. I agree but disagree. You retrain and no need. Just like the (missing) blinker stalks. It's a crutch...and I totally get it! ...until you don't have the crutch.
I literally installed this same rear view camera one day before Chuck posted this. It's a great product though somewhat difficult (but not too difficult) to install. I installed my rear camera in the exact same spot as Chuck and my cable install method is easier than his. Didn't require any fishing and just went between a gap in the stainless steel pieces. The install of everything under the hood of the front camera housing in the cabin was a bit of a pain and it took me three or so tries just like Chuck. Overall very worth it and I recommend. The view from the rear camera, especially at night, is far better than the built in Tesla camera. Also, Chuck, thanks for the having hour 3d printed housing available for download. I'm going to use it and print the same one. Cheers!
Amazing job Chuck! Yes that aero cover works nicely with that camera. Doesn't make sense to use the back tailgate camera because it's useless when its down. Love the touchscreen rearview adjustment. You are an honorable Tesla engineer. Another thing: the camera position you have used is more in line with the rearview "mirror" of that truck.
Tesla should have included this from factory! Great and informative video Chuck. I definitely would do this same setup when I get my truck. Seen other videos placing rear camera under bumper but placing it above tonneau gives much better view.
SO crazy this isn't stock! I am sure it will be eventually. It's pretty cheap and can tap into the existing rear camera... Love your implementation though being able to check the bed.
Great! I wonder how this looks with a bike rack on the trailer hitch? 16:37 mounting above tonneau 20:24 21:29 installed how it works 21:55 pan and tilt, and swipe for front camera if that's somehow useful 23:32 3d printed cover is really nice 24:02 driving with it. 24:53 you don't lose rearview, discussion of off-road mode for 3 camera view 26:00 agree with this use case of 2/3 camera views 26:30 broader view of mirror cam. Also tailgate down value.
I hope Tesla will offer an official retrofit for this feature in the future. The placement is actually perfect; it will not get any dirt from the rear wheels, and with proper casing, it won't have any water on the lens when it's raining.
Thank you for making this video! I think I asked you on X for this and I really appericate you coming through with this since there isn't many videos about this issue yet.
Chuck that came out great. Aero cover looks awesome, told Hansshow to make one too! I do wish the install was easier. I ended up with a APP_w142 error from dorking around with it so many times. (Front camera calibration) and bye FSD. I gave Hansshow some feedback but abandoned it for now. It’s very easy to also throw off the nav. I attempted to clear my camera calibration, then it came back after. At Lowe’s this AM I opened a SC ticket, but when I came out I had FSD again so puzzled.. keeping an eye on it.
Chuck, thank you for taking the time to do this. Your camera skills are top-notch. I wanted to know if I could pay you for your time to make another 3D-printed bracket like you had to cover up the wire on top.
@Gkingdom1 - check with your local library to see if they have a 3D printer. it is very common that libraries have these printers these days. If they do, you just need to email them the file from Thingyverse and they will print it for you for a small fee (usually just a buck or two for something this size).
Nice job, like the housing you created for the camera. Totally agree that there are senarios where you need the rear view when your turn signal is on, I had that issue the other day and this would solve that. Hopefully TESLA will add the offroad camera mode to regular driving mode to see all the cameras at the same time. Thank you for this!!!
I think the consensus is "why didn't Tesla just do this from the beginning". I understand the quest for autonomy, but at the end of the day this is still a work vehicle and going to be driven by humans. It will be interesting to see how FSD works when you're hauling a bunch of timber with the tail gate down and that rear camera is basically out of commission. The placement of your camera seems logical and could be integrated at manufacturing even better. I think this will prove a good investment for you.
Thanks Chuck for sharing. Pity the mirror could not interface with the existing cameras but I'm sure this is going to be a good addition to the Cybertruck. Love the 3D printed cover.
Lovely job! The Camera Supplier should perhaps include a suitable camera housing. Of course, I believe Tesla should have this Camera and "Mirror" included as a standard feature. Regardless of any FSD, the fact you can watch your open loading area is reason enough. The original mirror really is a joke.
Great product. I think it’s pathetic, especially given the price of the Cybertruck, that Tesla doesn’t have this as standard. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
Thank you for making the video. I too had bought this kit and it is nice to see the job I have ahead of me. I too wanted to mount the rear camera in the same spot. I don't have a 3-D printer. If you are printing mounting brackets I would gladly pay you if you can make one for me. It is going to be nice turning on the blinder and not loosing the review. I was however thinking of mounting the front camera on the glass behind the back seat in the cab so I can easily see if my load has shifted during transport. You really don't need a front camera because CT already has one already.
Really, nice job on the camera install, very professional! I appreciate you sharing your video setup also. My only fear is that this camera still lacks a narrow enough FOV to serve as a true rear view mirror replacement. This camera is more of a backup mirror than the rear-view mirror the CT needs. I think we need a dedicated CT designed mirror replacement kit, one that does not include things not needed like forward looking cameras.
Are you having any issues with your GPS and packet cellular signal reception? Since installing the mirror, i am experiencing temporary loss of GPS tracking and entertainment connectivity. I suspect a RF noise issue with the antennas located above the Beauty Cover. I am curious how you managed the cables tucked inside the cover. I orientated them as a coil around the outer edge of the signal reflector plate. This approach might have created an unwanted noise generating antenna. I hope you might be able to share your experience with the wire placement details of the installation and any post installation anomalies.
Long time fan here. Thanks for the informative video. I might get one of those. I was wondering what the circuit board with the spiral circuit trace in the windshield camera housing is, any idea?
Chuck, I would prefer a zoomed in view like a traditional mirror for better clarity rather than an ultra wide view where it’s hard to identify the vehicles directly behind, especially at night. Does this mirror allow you to choose a standard view over wide view?
Outstanding job, it looks very professional. I've ordered the same setup and I would like to buy the to install it the same way. Would you be interested in selling the rear camera cover?
🇬🇧Love your channel from this side of the pond here in England 🏴. However, I think this is a badly thought out and designed piece of Cyberkit. IMO, the Cybertruck is the equivalent of the iPhone compared to old mobile phones, it’s a game changer! Why would anybody make you look away from your normal, safe driving view? 🧐The View in the Tesla screen was just as badly designed & positioned, sometimes ‘no part isn’t the best part’. If this accessory is going to be a game changer, utilise the area for the sun visor. Imagine if you had a large, wide screen for your sun visor that displayed your left, rear, and right hand side views.
Chuck, I was sent one from Hansshow as well, and started the install and immediately ran into issues. The mirror mount is not anywhere even close to an optimal design- the space isn't really big enough for those wires and the install broke the damn tab off as well. The screw when tightened broke through the thin area that is supposed to house it, and the screw inset really long enough to accommodate a washer of any consequence. ( new bracket is on the way and they had to send me a new harness as well- the first one was wrong for my unit as well). The tolerances for the wires in the front triangle and hazard control are too tight for proper placement of the wires and there has been a question or two raised as to the degradation of the cell performance with the wires next to the cellular antenna. And the mount for the rear camera, knowing that most people WON'T want to mount the camera by the hitch, is a bit ridiculous. The fact that you can't flip the image in the software is crazy. It seems like the product is well intentioned and the quality of components is decent, but the implementation is sub-par. The only people I have seen successfully install the unit so far are engineering types like yourself. I would gladly pay $100-200 for someone to install it professionally but honestly, there should be a simpler solution. They honestly need to ask actual users how to redesign the installation for an actual "user installable" experience that doesn't sour the customer to future purchases. Thank you for the great video- it convinced me to hold off on my install any further until they get some stuff fixed!
I recon this will be standard in the future it's just that the cybertruck was so expensive at first and they didn't want to be like rivian and lucid which are overspecced and therefore lose masses of money per vehicle. Once those costs are sorted it'll get it just like model 3 got the rear screen
The issue i have with this is the rear camera and screen are 1080P once u see a 4k version maybe it be worth the cost. but for $140 u can get 2.5k Rear camera with 4k Screen

The cycbertruck should have come with this from Tesla. At some point all vehicles will have these. But at over $400 this is too expensive. So if this was designed for the Cybertruck then why was the power cable too long? What I don't like about this probuct besides the price, is that the rear camera is exposed too much and can be easily stolen.
Did you ever come up with a cover for the rear camera to be installed above the tonneau? I am interested in getting a cover or making one if someone has a 3D print file. This is link to my install video th-cam.com/video/IGXqvF5e0YY/w-d-xo.html I am curious how you coiled your excess wire length. Thanks for the video.
It is pretty stupid that Tesla did not include a rear-view mirror with video, connecting the rear camera on the vehicle. A big miss on the design and MFG teams. These dedicated Tesla owners are spending more money and time trying to get the gen 1 Cybertruck to be more useable...better to wait for gen 2 or later.
Totally unnecessary, the view on screen is more than sufficient once you get used to. I would argue the placement of the screen view is better than that of a rear view mirror because you don’t have to look up.
