This is another walk over Newton Dunes but this route takes you over the limestones ridge. From the top, you get great views of Porthcawl and across the Bristol Channel.
The walk continues inland towards the old village of Tythegston before heading back down to Newton Beach and Porthcawl.
The 4.75-mile walk takes about 1 and a half hours.

I think it is more than just a little walk. Markus your knowledge of the dunes is very impressive. I used to live in one of the houses shown at the beginning and the end of this walk, but you showed me places I have never discovered! On a walk to the stepping stones I picked up some pollen and had a severe case of hay fever for a few weeks. Never had it before or since. Thanks for the memories of my walks and greetings from Thailand. By the way, it is much warmer here, a little too warm if i'm being honest, and getting hotter!

You have brought some memories back for me We used to stay in a small carvan park just off Newton Beach -it was called Herberts Filed- behind St Johns Church - Along side Newton beach there used to be a small row old wooden holiday shacks
Hi Vincent. I remember many happy summers at Herbert’s field as a kid. My Aunty Gwen had an old caravan there as did my uncle Vernon, mam and dad took us there back in the late 60s. It always seemed baking hot and we loved to play in the sand bank by the back hedge to the dunes. Happy memories

I have done the outward path and then turned right to Ogmore and walked back down the beach, I think I was following another of your "lockdown walks". The one thing I remember is that the climb up the ridge was steeper than it looked! The return trip looked good so I may give that a try.
The "visitors book" was a nice touch and was like a GEOCHACHE although they are better hidden and are lots of fun trying to find them.

Yep, the walk up the ridge is not long but yes, it is very steep.
Wow Marcus, your walk along that ridge was quite high up according to the lovely views you shown! but I am very surprised that it is all sand WOW, this area must have been one enormous dune several thousand years ago, must have been impressive?
Hi, that ridge is actually limestone. If you have a look as I walk along the top you can see the stone. The sand covers the side of the ridge.
As watchable as ever, Marcus - I’ll hopefully follow in your footsteps doing this walk in the coming weeks.

@@marcuswalks I highly recommend the Weobley Castle circular walk I did - parking in Landimore and then heading clockwise, east to the castle, then south-west to follow the Burry Pill up to Cheriton, then back to the start through a farm and then the Coastal Path along Landimore Marsh. Otherwise I’d like to do a history walk in and around Llanelli in the near future. Got any planned?
@@oliverroderick2353 I've been to the castle but haven't really walked the North Gower side. Maybe worth trying over the summer.

Hi Marcus, great video again. Merthyr mawr dunes really is a beautiful area , but the paths can be a bit tricky, especially as the deer are making new but very narrow paths throughout. These can very quickly disappear into the trees and marshy areas leaving no alternative than to retrace your steps and find another route. So these videos are really helpful in that regard.
Another thing I was interested in is on old maps there’s a dune slack ( flooded in winter) that’s called ‘Pwll y Briton Tom’, It’s just downstream of ‘Burrows well’ and the spring. Do you know who ‘ Briton Tom’ ( or Tom Briton?) was? I’ve tried searching this out on the web but with no luck. I thought you’d be the guy to ask 😄. Cheers again Marcus, I might bump into you on a walk one day .
No, I've no idea about Pwll Y Briton Tom. First time I've noticed it was when you pointed it out. I'll ask in the museum on Saturday
@@marcuswalks there’s a great resource on the web from the national library of Scotland, where you can look at old o.s maps from @ 1900 and compare with modern O.S maps or satellite images alongside. They cover the whole of the uk. There’s probably an equivalent from National library of Wales,but I’ve not downloaded that yet. It’s very interesting to see how the landscape has changed ( or not) in the last 124 years.

The yellow lines are permissive but only for locals,no troggs 😂
