Indian Historian Babasaheb Pudandare while telling how British love & preserve their history gave example of this ship HMS Victory. He was surprised that British even knew the place where Nelson actually fell down on the deck. We Indians won lots of wars too but we never preserved our history. HMS Victory is a lesson for Indians and everyone around world "How to preserve History"

The Royal Yacht was a symbol of our state. A mobile hosting point and PA global attraction to the monarchy. One of the biggest mistakes was not to commission a successor to Britannia.

Fantastic ,absolutely love Portsmouth due to Dad being a petty officer, uncle being a fleet chief , both started as rating made their way up ranks . So we always visit south sea hayling island Portsmouth surrounding area every year . My mum is getting older now so we just held a party and your documentary was at the centre of it ... so thank you so much for a great overview of Portsmouth , it meant a lot to her .
    Yet another fantastic documentary .

Love this, Though Palmerston's folly does not include Portchester castle. The fifth fort to the north west was Fort Wallington, now a industrial estate and partially knocked down. To the west on the Gosport peninsula are Forts Elson, Sultan and Rowner, with Nos 1 and 2 batterys at Browndown an upgraded Fort Gillkicker and Fort Monkton on the Solent coast.

I am surprised that Prince Edward did not mention the fact that his parents first met in Portsmouth when George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother were on tour there in 139 just before the start of the war. His father, the Duke of Edinburgh was stationed at Portsmouth and assigned to look after Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret

The justification to tax payers and the public for having the Royal Yacht was always that it could be quickly converted into a hospital ship in time of war. The Falklands war blew holes through that excuse when it was decided not to use it. So it was just a floating gin palace for the Royals to use for their holidays and honeymoons. The Queen shed a tear when it was decommissioned. I didn't.

I am sure the Monarchy would happily swap the Civil List for the revenues of the Crown Estates, which are, after all the Monarch's.b. It would substantially increase the Royal income and allow the Monarch to afford fipperies like Royal Yachts.
