In the original, Kevin was bratty, yet still sympathetic, and the Wet Bandits were the clear villains. Here, the kid is SO obnoxious, that you find yourself rooting for the antagonists to win!

In my case I didn't know who to root for. Like I get it poor kid having his kid fears but on other not so smart parents trying to save their family. Both sides having some nonsense going on, both having backstory to make us not hate them. I would stop watching but I wanted to see if there were some snippets that would bring original movie's christmas spirit for me. There were few short ones but yea...this is not Home alone movie to me; it's okay-ish for what it is but yeah it's not Home Alone. It's not what I expected when I decided to watch this.

Its so hilarious that modern Hollywood spends so much time trying to make villains “sympathetic” that they completely overlook the main character or what should be the “hero” of the story and end up making them obnoxiously unlikable, resulting with weird mixed messages being sent to the audience

i really like the skeleton of this movie and i think a better writer woulda pulled it off. you can't have the kid overhear 1 sentence of a conversation 2-3 times and think they're gonna kidnap em. fix that part. have the british kid hide the doll at the start, apologize for it, and i really like this movie.

Yeah, Home Alone is the original loveable classic. Home Alone 2 is actually better, but since it is the 2nd one people who already saw the first didn't feel the freshness of the premise.
I feel like those who like the 2nd more probs saw it first or have seen both ALOT of times to the point where it didn't matter which was first, so the idea of freshness went away.
The 2nd was seen as worse for awhile because it wasn't original, but over time matched up with the first because the originality was no longer an issue. When you see it every year originality matters less.

  • @spaceace4387
    @spaceace4387 3 ปีที่แล้ว +164

Here is why the original is better: In the original the characters were actually fleshed out and developed. Kevin was not a perfect kid (wasn't a Mary Sue), he started out as a brat but you understood why he was a brat. Then over the course of the film he had a little thing called a "character arc" and he realized how much he needed his family. This made him interesting, likeable and made you want to root for him. The burglars on the other hand were doing horrible things, we got to know them, they were also well fleshed out but at the end of the day they were terrible people which made it satisfying when Kevin tortured them. In Home Sweet Home Alone I was pulling for the burglars because all they were trying to do was get back something that was rightfully theirs, the kid Max was an annoying little shit who didn't have nearly the depth or the likability that Kevin had and I found myself pulling for the burglars to rip his fucking head off. Not to mention the dialogue was beyond unnatural, the acting was bad and there were so many call backs to the original that weren't earned nor were they needed, typical Disney these days.

Let’s be honest here. Pam and Jeff are the protagonists of this movie. They’re just two parents who need money in order to keep their house just so that they and their kids could have a place to live. As a result of that, you feel more emotion for THEM instead of the main character, Max, you know, the kid who’s home alone, THE ONE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ROOTING FOR? Unlike other films, in which the burglars more or less deserved what they got (First film, Wet Bandits tried to rob Kevin’s house, second film, the Sticky Bandits try to steal charity money meant to got to kids who desperately need it in a hospital, third film, four terrorists try to steal a chip that controls a missile for a North Korean terrorist organization, fourth film, Marv and his wife try to get revenge on Kevin, fifth film, three art thieves try to break into a house to steal a valuable painting and try to kill anyone who gets in their way), where whenever the robbers fall for the traps, it’s funny, here… it’s not funny. Especially when Pam starts CRYING over the fact that their kids will be forced to live on the streets just because they can’t pay their debts. This film kind of reminds me of the SpongeBob episode, One Coarse Meal. In that episode, Mr. Krabs tries to terrorize Plankton into committing suicide so that Plankton will no longer try to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Ignoring all the other major things the episode does wrong, this episode basically is saying, “It doesn’t matter what Mr. Krabs is doing here, he’s the hero, Plankton’s the villain, so if Mr. Krabs wants to drive him to suicide, that’s OK because he's the hero!” The fact is this idea DOES NOT WORK if you feel sorrier for the supposed “antagonist” of the story rather than the “protagonist”. As for Max, the main character, he’s overall pretty bland and lacks the charm of Kevin, or Alex from the first three films. Heck, even though 4 and 5 are hated by a lot of people, at least THERE they made it clear that the kid is the protagonist, and the bandits are the villains. I guess they wanted to mix things up with this film to have it stand out from the previous films, like having the villains be good because it’s Christmas and the important thing is family and all that, but the premise is way too mean spirited, and having Pam and Jeff suffering through the traps, while they are ALREADY SUFFERING FROM LOSING THEIR HOUSE AND NOT HAVING MONEY TO FEED THEIR KIDS is overall just way too depressing for me to laugh at.

I'm confused: they know a resident of the house is around (cos they deliberately decided Church time is a good time to break in) but if they know someone, anyone, is around, why don't they just wait for the resident to be home and knock on the door?!?!?!
The only justification for breaking and entering would be that no one is around for several days and they're on a deadline to recover their property. They knew the kid was around, why didn't they just knock on the door and ask him? Even if he was stubborn they could threaten to call the cops since it would be a case of recovering stolen property, that would scare a kid into compliance if you had to stretch the plot.
But then at the end they say the didn't realise the kid was home by himself, which means they were operating under the premise that some adults were around, and they still thought the best course of action was to break in and not knock on the door?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? What the hell? Talk about a forced plot!!!

Frozen: Let's deconstruct our love at first sight trope.
Problem: Hans suddenly being okay with killing Arendelle's princess comes out of nowhere, even if he was just marrying her for the throne.
Big Hero 6: Let's give Hiro someone to parallel his grief and thirst for revenge.
Problem: Why is Callaghan okay with killing his students, and didn't even bother to check if his daughter was alive.
Zootopia: Let's further our message about prejudice by making the person who did it a cute sheep woman.
The problem: We don't see much of Dawn's relationship with Lionheart to know why she's so against predators.

2 and 3 are big contenders as my favorite. Because it’s not as widely discussed, I really like 3, not because it was new and didn’t strictly follow the McAllister arc, but because it had a funny and interesting story to tell that felt distinctly Home alone. You had a kid who was at odds with his neighbor who happened to look after him while recovering from Chicken pox. Pair that with workaholic parents and siblings who were at that teenage angst phase who lacked empathy, and you have a kid who had a lot to prove. Then you have the villains who were secret spies that were tasked with recovering a missile chip that would threaten American airspace. What made the whole thing mesh was the overall objective of who would end up in possession of said chip after it ended up in a toy car and getting swapped at the airport, prompting the spies to search every house. It might not be as popular, but 3 was indeed the last good Home Alone movie.

4.Home Alone 5:This was a really "MEH" movie, once again it has more burglars, had some fun scenes and the traps were alright, don't hate it or like it, just MEH to me..
3.Highly underrated movie actually, not nearly as good as Home Alone and Home Alone 2, but I actually had fun watching it, I like how they tried it with new characters and more burglars breaking in and tried to make it different (kinda).
2.Home Alone 2:Really love this sequel! Sure it's kind of a copy and paste of the first Home Alone, but I still love watching it, I liked how this time they had Kevin in New York City! The traps are also really good! Solid Great Sequel! Definitely a classic!
1.Home Alone:Best movie in the franchise, will ALWAYS be the best movie in the franchise.Classic holiday movie! Nothing can top it off!

I enjoy Home Alone 1 because of the atmosphere, pacing and positive moral message. Home Alone 2 I really enjoy Harry because of how resilient he is dealing with the traps and the his screams are legendary. Harry's screams to me are like the quick silver scenes in the newer x-men movies, they are the maraschino on top.

worst part of the movie is the doll plot: clearly the british kid had to have hidden the doll at the start of the movie...but instead they push it off onto a character with 0 screen time. all you had to do was have the kid say "you were kind of a jerk to me so i hid it in the closet", apologize, movie over. instead they do the goofy cgi shit... i still liked this a touch more than 4 but god damn it's rough.

This shouldn't be called Home Alone! The studio is trying to appeal to nostalgia (and failing miserably) but they are also trying to be politically correct (sorta)! The original was good, because there wasn't a worry if those traps were too dangerous or anything and the main villains were comical but also truly threatening!

part of the problem is There Aren't antagonists in this one. in the original, its pretty clear Harry and marv don't mind hurting Kevin Which becomes outright kill after going through the house.
another mistake this one makes is while Kevin lives it up at first he Does start to miss his family halfway in. Kevin is a brat But a more realistic child overall. we never see that in this one. If anything he's worse for taking the toy from the church toy drive
another point is the mother character. in the original, she could only get back to Pennsylvania not Chicago and is hitchhiking with john candy to get back. so she's doing a Hell of a lot more to get home faster

I just think they could have made it clear that the kid wasn't ALL bad as we first thought which would have allowed us to sympathise with both sides, and maybe it could have poked fun at how silly some of those traps were, honestly one of the best scenes to me was when the mum was fighting back with the bin lid blocking the shots. It could have easily been switched up that the "bad" guys were actually quite smart and didn't fall for such silly traps, which I think would have been a better choice.
