Lathe Motor upgrade - adding a 550w 3/4hp brushless servo sewing machine motor

  • At the beginning of the year, I upgraded the motor on my little Australian made Advance lathe with a tiny 550watt, or 3/4 horsepower speed adjustable motor, which is sold for sewing machines.
    It has worked great so far. It is plenty of power for the little lathe, and I haven't found it to be under powered, even when working at slower speeds.
    I originally made this video at the beginning of the year, when it was a lot hotter than it is now. Now the fires have been put out, but we are stuck inside, I've finally gotten around to finish editing it and chucking it online.

    Thank you for showing how to install a brushless servo motor on a small lathe. Will be doing this myself shortly!

      I'm glad it's helpful. I still really like this motor for my lathe, it makes it so much more usable being able to quickly change the speed of the lathe. I hope yours works out well for you too.

      @@StiffmanOz I feel like this is a real coup for repowering a lathe- with an industrial sewing unit you get a motor, speed control and power supply already put together at a great price. With the electronic speed control you're able to go very slow yet have plenty of power I take it. Awesome!

    Just burnt mine out cutting steel at 200rpm on a bandsaw. getting a worm-gear and will shut it down before cooking the next one. There's a gap where the lever meets the housing allowing swarf waste to short across from the magnet to hall sensor and lever. It's a nasty jolt with one hand on the lathe and you touch the lever. Shrink wrap the lever and a regular clean solves that.

    • @thewildfrontier1

      Turns out while the motor got too hot to touch it still works fine. The controller needed replacing.

    Out of the box, did you need to do anything to get the motor spin? Did you need to set some specific parameter in the controller? I just bought one of these, it won't spin! Thank you. [UPDATE: I was moving the lever in the wrong direction! It works!!]

  • @franklingomez5311
    @franklingomez5311 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why wouldn't you just mount the servo directly to the back end of the lathe spindle instead?
    Sure it spins but it sounds a bit loud and you hardly get to see the benefits of a servo motor over another kind of motor the way you've done it.

  • @ahmadifwat478
    @ahmadifwat478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you think the motor is usable for a small bandsaw?
    The variable speed makes me think of using it so my bandsaw can be used to cut metal

    • @StiffmanOz
      @StiffmanOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might. It depends on the size of the motor on the bandsaw. If it's only one of the table top ones, I wouldn't be surprised if it is OK wattage wise. The other thing to be aware of is max RPM. These little motors can spin at quite the pace. You might want to confirm the rpm of the motor on the bandsaw too. You can adjust the speed on the motor controller, but you want to be careful not to give the bandsaw way more speed than what it can handle.
      Basically, I haven't done it, so I can't say for sure, but it might.

    You need to move the magnetic hall effect speed control as it is open on top and the way you have it placed, it will get metal fillings inside. Since the center wire is a full 115 volts, it could short and fry the control unit board.

  • @fstarockaburns425
    @fstarockaburns425 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I put one in the wifes sewing machine and its variable, why can you put a lever on there to control the speed and set the max on the box? Seems like the entire benefit of the motor is being wasted, yours looks like it just goes on/off? Ours is variable- looking to upgrade the southbend 9 to a modern motor..

    • @StiffmanOz
      @StiffmanOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The leaver controller is completely variable. You can set the maximum speed on the controller box, but then adjust it with the lever from slow, all the way to the maximum set speed.

    • @StiffmanOz
      @StiffmanOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, How's it going. I don't really do much threading on it, but I think it's powerful enough for this little lathe to do the job at low speeds. I'm very impressed at how this little motor performs, and think it's a worthy addition for many small lathes and machines. I've contemplated putting one on my drill press too. The instant speed control is so handy!

    Sir, is the speed linear with the movement of the lever ? I noticed you change the program speed. Is the program speed the setting of the max speed the motor could turn ? This means if you set to 3000 rpm, the speed can vary linearly between 0-3000 rpm?
    I am looking to use for cnc application. Does the input control take voltage say 0-5 or 0-10 V?

    • @StiffmanOz
      @StiffmanOz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct regarding the speed control, you can set the maximum speed in the controller, and then the lever adjusts between the 0 and the top speed you specifiy.
      The control lever is a potentiometer or a hall effect sensor, I can't quite remember right now. I'm not sure the best way of adapting that for digital control
