So many horror movies do have great story though! Basically anything del Toro, Mama, the Babadook... even Ari Aster has solid story in there. Sure, a lot of slasher and giallo is more about gore than plot... but suspense and atmospheric horror is a rich tapestry. (And sometimes i just want to watch Suspiria, and that's okay too.)
... on reflection I think Ari Aster is the only American i recommended, so yeah, check out the international scene.
