One way to fix an FF error on EFI Fiery RIP, USB drive wouldn't boot Linux Kernel

  • This process was a mental exercise for me trying to determine the component that failed on my Fiery Raster Image Processor. I do better with gears and switches than electronics. Connecting a computer screen was helpful to see what the Linux system was doing. I could then see that it would stop on booting the kernel. Tried another USB drive and I was back in business. A CD should be supplied with your RIP that has software on it, if not you can download from Fiery.
Here is a link to download software from Fiery. www.efi.com/su...

To minimize downtime, this is what I have done with my Fiery:
Once I had a fresh install ready, with all the available system updates installed, all the system settings set, all the PANTONE libraries updated, etc. I pulled out the hard drive and connected it to my computer.
Then, using something like Macrium Reflect, I clone it to a used, known good hard drive of a similar capacity (HDD capacity for Fierys doesn't really matter in my experience - system install uses

This is a great SOP. As a point of reference, just as it will with any computer, replacing a mechanical drive with an SSD will speed performance greatly. As someone who used to repair lots of Fierys I had a library of preloaded HDDs and models and kept them "pure" for just this reason. I remember the PI-7200 (KM specific) that used to have 32 patches/updates, each requiring a reboot, sometimes a pair of reboots each taking 5-10 minutes between updates making a load an 8 hour ordeal. While manuals don't necessarily state the need for a reboot in between patches, I found that it was the best way to eliminate some glitches that remains undocumented. If in doubt, IMO, reboot. This frees the system to remove and replace any files locked because they are loaded in active memory. FWIW.
On the FF code, as often as not I've found impatience to be part of the problem. If the unit is set to perform updates automatically especially, a reboot can take a very, very long time as the system updates, especially with the Unix based Fierys. If in doubt, allow at least 20 minutes before declaring a problem. Also bear in mind, its just a computer and you can plug in a mouse, keyboard and monitor to most and watch the boot process. Even if the BIOS is programmed to disable video, it usually won't do so until after the system has finished or almost finished booting. Watching screen messages can give great clues for troubleshooting.
Also, FYI, EFI seems to buy hard drives in very large batches (probably to secure the best price) and even if the Fiery itself is relatively new, the drive may have been sitting on a shelf for years. I came to this conclusion based on the failure of large numbers of the same unit within a very small time frame, all due to HDD problems. If in doubt, suspect the HDD and corrupted OS.
Re: USB sticks. If you're having trouble with one, don't assume its necessarily the HDD or Fiery itself. If in doubt, go with the OLDEST tech USB you have that is compatible with size requirements. (IE USB 2.0) Bear in mind, these units do not use the latest and greatest tech and USB 3.0 often requires a drive which may not be loaded, at least not right away, or may be 'within spec' but the "spec" has a range of features for connection that may or may not be supported. Its slower, yes, but better than trying 3x and having the install fail and then moving on.
I've worked on these units since you had to load system software via parallel cables and outside of HDDs its rare for the actual main board to die. If anything, I'd suspect the interface board first. One of the first things I'd do is remove and reseat memory and cards in case contacts were dirty or vibration had just worked the card a little out of position. If you're comfortable working on computers you're welcome to do as you will, but I can't remember ever having to pull a CPU off the mainboard. Fans, yes, but there are failsafes to keep even overheated CPUs from damage (it should just shut off).
Here's a kicker EFI will never admit to. I was in EFI HQ getting training on the their very first implementation of their Profiler Suite and tool (pre X-Rite even) and noticed an engineer with 3 or 4 different manufacturer's copiers connected to one external RIP. The RIP is just a PC and all it required was the correct interface board for the various machines! That tells you how standardized the hardware and most of the software is.

This is the one thing that scares me more than anything about not being on a service contract. I had one time where a power surge hit the whole shop and fried my Fiery for our Ricoh c7110. Thankfully we were on a service contract so they just came out and swapped the whole Fiery and we were back up within 48 hours. If we didn't have the contract I would have been chasing down issues like this for days/weeks until it was figured out. You're a more patient man than I am, Dan. Good work.

Exactly. What happens when you are running a big job with a deadline, such as a political mailer and this happens. You risk not only losing that job, but the client, which could be worth 100s of thousands of dollars a year or more. Granted, having several machines alleviates that, but you still have to spend that time working on the machine instead of producing jobs. I guess in a pinch you can always call service and pay cash.

From my experience. If the Fiery goes to FF instantly when powered on, that's normally an issue with the Motherboard or CPU.
If it boots but never gets pasts the FF code, a software reload normally fixes the issue. On most Fierys you also must use the DIP switches to enable the Fiery to read files from the USB to reload the software.

I have a longer reply down below with some tidbits I've found useful over the years. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that while it is technically OK to load a new OS over the top of a corrupted system, I have had this hang for no apparent reason. The solution (undocumented, btw) was to put the drive in another PC, remove all partitions, format as a single partition and then reinstall. This causes the OS install to recreate all the partitions from scratch. I was unable to confirm it, but I suspect there were corrupted files in the swap partition that was causing the OS to fail to load. EFI was stumped over this one and I had the EFI guru working on it but the partition wipe solved the issue. FWIW

Hi Dan, I am an IT tech who is having to support a Fiery server, that cannot be accessed via a web browser or the LCD panel of my printer. I have no experience of these & my company have not kept the original CD's. I tried the link in your pinned comment but it doesn't go anywhere anymore. Do you have an updated link for the System Software CD's as I'm thinking the only way to regain access to the Fiery server is to rebuild it? Any help that you can provide would be most appreciated. TIA

Great video, as usual!! I recently also had a Fiery with a bad fan which caused other problems where ultimately the drive had to be replaced by my Canon tech.
    Two questions:
What Command Workstation version are you running?
Did the Solid State drive improve performance?

Hi Dan, I'm a follower of yours, and your videos always help me find solutions. Thanks a lot. I own a small print shop, and I have a Konica C3070 press. A few weeks ago, the Fiery started showing the FF code. I tried to reinstall the software, but I'm not sure which version I should use. I attempted to install version 1.0, but I encountered error EE-11, indicating "Failed to retrieve product information. It is not Fiery Color Server." Since my machine was bought second-hand and didn't come with the Fiery installer DVD, I'm unsure of the correct software version. My Fiery is IC-417 VER A9F7WY3, which seems to be the same as yours. I would really appreciate it if you could provide some information. Greetings from Colombia.

you may want to have a clone of your hard drive so you can swap it out without more imaging.
swaping out components is often easier and faster than real diagnosis.
also think about how enterprise you want your drives. server drives have more tollerance for jostle based failure so they might reduce the number of failures.
initially it looked like you were using the usb stick to boot from, and those are made with the cheapest storage on the market. if you are doing backups to update or restore from, you may want bo have something either freshly flashed (bad sectors are generally ignored) or maybe just get the drive fully prepared.
idk how the networking is set up in your software, but having a drive named printer 3 and having it just on hand might help with uptime risk. if you can swap the drives and the network auto clicks it up, it might only take a few minutes to swap and change that you want to send a file to the one with drive 3.
drives fail more often than memory and cpus. and you can extend the life of memory and cpus by doing things like under clocking them and under volting. it makes your machine slower, but often, speed for industrial processes matters less than uptime.
again these are server approaches, but when some things are out of your expertise, sometimes it is worth more to not have a problem you are unfamiliar with than to have spikey novel problems. you said you tried replacing the cpu and memory first, and waiting for mail delivery must have been awful. especially if you only ordered one fix at a time.
also you might be able to get small old server grade drives for cheap. drives arent used up by big companies since it is too risky, and they also want to have huge storage in their server clusters. in part it is because of sockets and in part they dont want to spend the energy. so if you are only writing once and reading it tons, you might not need much more memory than the actual files. SLD means single level storage and it is the most stable.
    just two cents.

LED code "AA" means that the motherboard is trying to complete power-on self test (POST). If the system stays on "AA" permanently, the likely cause could be a hardware failure of the motherboard.
      Before attempting to reinstall system software or replacing any hardware;
      - Disconnect power and, reseat all connectors and components. Check if the Fiery controller will boot to Idle after this step.
      - If the problem persists - it may be worth trying to force a CMOS clear by disconnecting the power cable and copier IF cable, then remove the CMOS battery (the small coin-sized battery) for 5 minutes. Then return the battery to its original position and re-connect the copier IF cable and the power cable. Try booting the Fiery controller again.
-If the problem still remains after the above steps, it is likely that some hardware component has failed - possibly - motherboard, CPU or memory (but most likely - motherboard).

Biggest consideration will be the actual volume anticipated. I supported a number of funeral parlors and virtually all used business class rather than production class machines. Production machines do not do well unless used all the time. Relatively short runs are fine on the business class units, they are less expensive, generally easier to maintain and take up far less room. I often turned customers on to using Legal size sheets, folded or in booklets, and they seemed even better accepted than standard folded letter size.
