Alan's gig at the Kingston Grand Theatre - the first Welcome Home Tour show to sell out - took place on March 11th, 31 years to the day from Great Big Sea's first gig (opening for the The Irish Descendants at the Memorial University Thompson Student Centre in St. John's)...GBS's Bandiversary, if you will. That same day in 1993 is also what Alan considers to be the start date of his making a living in music. Alan commemorated his 31st Year In Music with a cold one from MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Company, and then went on to celebrate the occasion in the best possible way for him: He and his awesome Beautiful Beautiful Band put on a great show, giving all those in the sold-out theatre a grand night out (in the appropriately named Grand Theatre, of course). There were GBS songs, solo AD songs, NL songs (I almost forgot to video Lukey, then partway through remembered a little boy and his family who were present this night and scrambled for my camera), songs dedicated to much-loved family members, an introduction of Ron Hynes, the fella subbing for Shehab on the bass, an impromptu gathering of the First-Concert Club (prefaced by a leap from the stage that nearly gave me a heart attack), and an overall lovely time with a dear man who works harder than just about anyone I've ever known and who puts on a better show than just about anyone I've ever seen. And who is clearly ready for his next 31 years. ❤ (Thought about putting 31 ❤s here but maybe not.). Grand Theatre, Kingston ON. March 11, 2024
