- Hi Danceliners, in this new format we will show you the Evolution of the Variations over the years. In this video, Giselle over time (from 1968 to 2016). The beautiful performers are:

I've always loved Marinela, and an added beauty about her dancing is how musical she is! All her movements match the beats of the music, and she holds her positions just long enough, with smooth transitions.
I agree that her expressiveness in this role by far exceeds the others, and is certainly a great technician. But there's also something about Carla Fracci's performance that I've always loved too! I saw that film in the theater in the early 70's, and fell in love with both Giselle and Carla Fracci! So it may just be sentiment! I would love to see a comparison of all these dancers in the Mad Scene, though! For me, there's none better than Natalia Makarova.
Marianela Nuñez is the best ballet dancer in Europe, imo. She's just amazing in everything!
E' sempre innaturale con modi ed espressioni fuori contesto, sicuramente molto molto precisa (ma sono costretti a rallentarle la musica), e completamente priva di carisma.
I must agree and disagree. Carla Farci has the true essence of a classical ballerina. Marunella though technically more advanced and wonderful in every way; Carla Farci takes the cake for style.
Marianela is my favorite. I don't think I've ever seen another ballerina who becomes the character the way she does. She's technically perfect and artistically perfect. 10/10
I love me some Marianela dont get me wrong but I admire her more as Myrtha , Gamzati , Black Swan . When she plays the antagonist and gives that disserning eyebrow its like you better watch out .
Those slow pointe hops at the very beginning are CRAZY!!!
And to think Alicia Alonso was pretty much blind and used the light in the stage to guide herself

Carla Fracci 1969 impressed me the most. She was brilliant, but also was her costume and that wonderful scenery. Not only a realistic water mill, but it had a turning water wheel. Fantastic.. It would be so lovely to see the rest of the ballet.

I agree...and she used the music to the most advantage. She danced so effortlessly she was able to be conscious of the story and her resulting expressive arms, face and positions was a joy to watch.

I saw Fracci and Bruhn live with ABT in 1968. She was unforgettable but it was her exquisite Act II that made her legend. Alonso was quite old in this film so it's a bit unfair to judge her technically, but you can see she has carried on the more stylised tradition of earlier years, especially in hands and portes de bra. Nunez is a great favourite of mine, a tremendous dancer, but I have to say that her prodigious technical abilities needed to be softened to do justice to the Romantic style. She danced this as powerfully as she would have danced Aurora or Sugar Plum Fairy or Odile. There was no fragility in sight. In this role, technique has to be subdued, concealed almost, to indicate the character's emotional fragility. But there's no denying that her security is a pleasure to watch.
Makarova is my favorite dancer of all time, and I saw her dance Giselle many times, but based on these Fracci and Nunez capture the innocence and joy of a young Giselle in love.

It’s my first time seeing Gisele by Alicia Alonso. Thank you for sharing. I’m amazed. It feels like she is taking to me. Its not a dance it’s an act, performance. Dancers of the past were so expressive. I guess nowadays dancers must be technically perfect and acting comes second.
Natalia Osipova is not here. She is also exceptional in this role
There is far less artistry in so many dancers today? Thank goodness some still remember it comes first in performance.
To me Fracci is the best!! She embodies the peasant girl perfectly and her smile is contagious.
She expressed joy.
On this scene, I 100% agree! For the Mad Scene, I go with Makarova. She truly looks like she's gone crazy! And her dancing matches the drama. For me, Makarov did for ballet what Callas did for opera.
Fracci's mad scene was incredible too. I was 9 years old when I saw her. It has stayed with me all these years. ❤❤❤
Fracci wins for best dancing -- and the waterwheel wins for best stage set. That was just phenomenal!

Giselle is such a beautiful ballet - beautifully danced by these ballerinas!
There’s a moment in the anime “Princess Tutu” where the top student in the class, Rue, practices dancing on one foot and it’s clear from her expression how actually difficult and painful it can be. Watching this it suddenly occurred to me the animation might’ve been a direct reference to this dance sequence in “Giselle”. I’d have to rewatch it to be certain (the entire soundtrack is public domain classical music so it’s possible). On another note, the costume design in each one is beautiful. I love seeing how each outfit captures the grace of twirling.
Good catch, maybe so… I loved Princess Tutu as a little kid and now as an older teenager who re-watched it, there’s actually many references that are very depth and you get the sense that the staff did their due diligence in the production’s different aspects. I always appreciated the tone of the show
Yes, that episode was in fact based on Giselle! It's nice to see people talking about the show, I've got to rewatch it sometime.
So interesting to see the interpretations of Giselle. For me Marianela's Giselle is superb.

Love marianella dancing, anything and everything , sublime acting and wonderful technique. Fantastic
Alonso was 48 in this clip, Fracci, 33, Makarova 37, Bessmertova, 49, Nunez 34. I think it's worth considering where each ballerina was in not only her career but also her life. The 30 somethings are at the peak of their careers with excellent strength, stamina, and agility. Ballerinas in their late 40s are at the end of their careers after 30+ punishing years of training and dancing, as well as experiencing the reduced strength and flexibility of ageing bodies. The tempo of the music has been slowed to account for this. Marvelous all, but perhaps not fair to compare a 33 year-old dancer to a 49 year-old.
Agreed, would recommend checking out the 70s television version that exists of Bessmertnova’s Giselle while in her 30s, she’s amazing in that. Sadly, footage of younger Alonso (and Ulanova, not shown in this video) sadly is rare ro come by:(
Not only all of that, just think of the evolution of techniques which is still evolving as we learn more about injury and long time wear and tear on the body, oh and the evolution of the technology in just their shoes!

I was so lucky to see Fracci in the late 60's dance Giselle. And Makarova in the early '70's. They are my idols. I love Nunez as well. I really feel she is an innocent. Excited young girl. Beautiful dancing and musicality. I saw Alonso do a farewell performance in her late 60's, nearly totally blind. Incredible.

49-летняя практически слепая Алисия Алонсо не делает себе поблажек ни в чем. Не пропущено и не упрощено ни одно па. Она делает двойные пируэты в обе стороны! Диагональ с тирбушонами просто великолепна - она прошла длинными скачками всю сцену на высоком релеве, не позволяя себе опуститься на полупальцы. Финальная диагональ с комбинацией вращений на большой скорости - как это вообще возможно сделать , не имея зрения? И при этом она потрясающе музыкальна и актерски точна. Фраччи заставляет забыть обо всем. Она говорит языком танца. настолько выразительны и в то же время естественны ее жесты и мимика. .Нуньес прекрасна. как всегда. но ее Жизель - озорная красотка, больше похожая на Китри. Макарова показалась мне манерной, Бессмертнову надо смотреть в других записях, более ранних времен. Оговорюсь, что это мое мнение, сложившееся после просмотра именно этих видео. Несомненно, все эти великолепные балерины своим творчеством вписали свое имя в энциклопедию мирового балета.

Alonso's balance is impeccable!!
I don't and never have done ballet, but seeing these graceful dancers gave me an incredibly strong impulse to start! Tbh, I have to constantly remind myself that those are real human ankles, and not just rubber hoses capable of supporting the weight of a human; they look so cool when they bend! I can't ever imagine being able to do any of this, but I'm thankful to the YT algorithm for recommending this to me.
There are a lot of wokouts based on ballet moves which can be done by beginners. Ofc It's not the same like classic ballet but its still interesting to do. My ancles and inner thighs became much stronger.
Five beautiful performances, and to me it comes down to the staging/production choices, which may not have been the dancer's choice. I like the choreography best in the Alonso excerpt, and least in the Bessmertnova--much too fast, as I could hear by the rushed and inartistic music. I was lucky enough to see Makarova dance with ABT and thought her second act incredibly beautiful and moving (closely followed by Gregory). In this excerpt, I liked Alonso and Fracci best, because they seemed closest to the original romantic-era concept of Giselle (as I understand it). Thank you so much for the compilation!
You have 5 excellent and beautiful dancers - - you have to make a tough decision - - and so you go into the specifics. I will choose Makarova - - a world famous dancer as well as a great comedienne - - too. Thank you @ DanceLine Ballet for sharing.

Все балерины прекрасны!!!! Слово ЭВОЛЮЦИЯ здесь совершенно неуместно. Нечему здесь эволюционировать. Техника и тогда уже была великолепна. Тем более у гениальной Алонсо!! И не забывайте,что Алисия была слепа!!! И еще один момент: Жизель была больна! Об этом необходимо помнить. Поэтому резвиться,как Нуньес она не могла. Уланова-вот эталон на все времена,

Какое удовольствие смотреть прим балерин , как ни странно, но очень понравилась Алонсо, хотя танцевала она давно и проще современных исполнительниц. Что-то завораживающее есть в ее движениях.
Потому что Алонсо танцует.Постепенно уходит танец и остается задирание ног шире и выше...

All of the dancers were incredible, but I believe Marianela's performance was my favorite. She has the most expression, in her dance and I also much prefer the costuming in her performance as well.

На Бессмертновой данная эволюция закончилась. С 21 века, в данном видео 2016 - другой вид : спортивный балет под музыку.

I agree. I see many aspects of the young woman Giselle in the creation of la Alonso. Her innocence, a spiritual kindness and love that could rise from the grave, a modesty that is betrayed if legs are showing off their altitude, and a fragility that could die of heartbreak. None of the other women look like heartbreak would kill them. They look like they would turn their back on the unfaithful man and just go find another. Somehow we know that there is no other man for Alonso’s Giselle.
Marianela is excelent but, in my opinion, nobody dances this variation like Carla Fracci. Grace combined with impeccable technique.

"Жизель" в исполнении Нуньес можно описать так: "Надо к небу поднять глаза и запрыгать ну как коза"(с) Изо всех только Алонсо и Бессмертнова (не смотря на возраст) показали балет. Остальные отработали упражнения и ушли.

Замечательное исполнение у всех. Просто прелестницы. Для себя отмечаю: не люблю на ЖизелЯх юбки сильно пышные, по крайней мере в первой части. Жизель крестьянка, юбочка попроще и просто красота.
У крестьянки юбочка не должна быть пышной, только ведь ей и фуэте крутить не надо. А когда эта крестьянская простая юбочка надета на балерину, это как-то не очень эстетично.
Sorry, start with Spessitsiva and then work your way thru the great ones. Ulanova. Markova, Alonso,, Fracci, Makarova, Kirkland and Osipova.........

Бессмертнова - Идеал Жизели как бы сошедшей с гравюры 19 века! Но ! В 20м веке ( кроме гения Улановой) была еще одна уникальная Жизель Золотого века Большого - Надежда Павлова! И есть эта сцена в ее исполнении - в 18 лет - это феноменально!

Interesting. Bessmertnova dances the whole variation without giving a single look nor to the prince, nor to the mother, nor to the audience, she's dancing for herself as if she was marking in the studio. Marianela, that I love over any other dancer in many ballets, smiles way too much here, which looks unnatural and awkward. Also I don't understand the spanish-style port-de-bras in the pirouettes section, the arm on the hip it's ok but she makes it look like Paquita. Beginner mistake that you wouldn't expect from her. I am very disappointed. Fracci and Alonso are much better in acting and even in dancing. Makarova is a legend, magnificent control and acting.

keep in mind that Giselle is dancing for a different "audience" in each of these productions. Fracci is dancing and flirting with Albretch. Nuñez is clearly dancing for the royalty, so the intent of the acting must be different.
@@dancentreofedinburg interesting. Do you have sources for these differents interpretations or is it about the feeling you get from them?
@Alice Tiezzi I have seen productions in which Giselle performs for the royalty, right after the peasant pas. In this case, she is performing for the duchess, and Albretch is not in that scene.
Originally, though, Giselle performs after she is crowned as "harvest queen?" by the winemakers, who enter after the royalty has left to go hunting. By this time, Albretch has come out from hiding.
