Well, the exercise was going long so it was called, but the last unit hadn't picked the kid up yet. The section that was supposed to pick him up, didn't know that, so they didn't report him missing. Remember when we were kids we used to build forts and always want to stay overnight, pretending it was home. For some of us, that part of childhood remains, only now mom and dad can't say no
I think this is brilliant! Does seem like it would be impossible to keep hole from filling with water in heavy rain, but if it truly stayed dry, it would be GREAT! Amazing fire.
Put a drainage ditch around it to divert the water around the hole like you would a home with basement. A plastic tarp would also help divert any water into the drainage ditch. Lastly don't dig your shelter in a low spot where water would collect in the first place.
@@readhistory2023 yeah, dont get me wrong, I love it. But the water is going to leak in like a faucet around the logs on sides and top! Need the trench for sure, but don't you think if she's not water proofed above, it's not gonna stay dry? But, hey , just throwing ideas around.

MY wife and I play two CDs at night, one on her side of the bed, one on mine. We have a thunderstorm CD, that has thunder distantly in the background, that's on her side. Mine is a rain CD, and basically, it's just white noise, but it works. I recall nights in the Army in Alaska, Infantry, sleeping in a sleeping bag, under a poncho and shelter half pup tent on tundra, an excellent mattress. You know there will be no bears tonight, to worry about, bears don't like the rain either. Safe, Sound sleep, and the sound of the rain just takes you away, safe, snug, comfortable. It took maybe 15 or 20 minutes to erect the pup tent. Some of that was finding the right lay of the tundra, so you got a pillow out of it. Those CD's do it for me every night. I'm sure I could set some records for getting to sleep. I also write down the things I want to remember for the next day or so. Then I can let them go in my head, and just relax. I sympathize with your family problems, we all have them in one form or another, but if you write it down, you can let it go for tonite, ya know? You'll have it back tomorrow. Good luck and sweet dreams.

Digging a hole and building a fire pit with some type of a smoke stack is the BEST way to build any type of a shelter. It is cooler in the summer and easy to heat in the winter, and the stack keeps the smoke of of the shelter. And your eyes, makes everything more enjoyable! Good work!
Hello my friend! Thank you for watching my video and also thank you for your nice comment! I hope that you enjoyed it! Take care of you! Greetings from Greece! :)
Yeah, the Saxons in medieval times used to do the same with their houses, dig down about 2 or so feet and start building from there. Gave them better insulation and they didn't have to build as high. They used wattle and daub sides as they were permanent buildings whereas this shelter is temporary. Great video.

@@dannyarrowheadstalker3054 Doubt that flooding will be the problem during the winter season. It's only a temporary use structure basically protection from the elements for survival. All the TH-cam channels, with guys building these amazing shelters, are in forests that supply perfectly straight logs for building. Dying to see what one of these would look like if in a wood full of twisty oak or maple or something that’s an OCD nightmare of non symmetrical wood.

But, hey , just throwing ideas around.
its easy in case it rains you just put a tarp over your roof . to prevent flooding a canal around your cabin would be nice.
@@edlopez4797 yeah, THAT does make sense! Just don't leave tarp off if leaving for any periods of time. Thanks Ed.

@@hanknmosul I love that sound too, whenever it rains at night I always have a better sleep it's soothing for me. Great info! Peace from down under

Thank you for taking the time to make this content. Your videos are brilliant. So peaceful to watch, living in this crazy world we’re in. Best wishes from Australia.

My only concern would be the small valley it was placed in. Heavy rain looks as if it might flood.
Hed be flooded out first good rain though he did build a raft of a floor .Been better off if he used a big greet tarp cover his frame then add logs n dirt it stayed allot dryer .
@@johnbsys1846 "survival"
Depends on the subsoil. Looked like sand under the topsoil that would improve the drainage in a heavy rain.
@@commonsenserules7995 I get that, but in my experience with flooding, the lowest ground goes under first.
@@dannyarrowheadstalker3054 Doubt that flooding will be the problem during the winter season. It's only a temporary use structure basically protection from the elements for survival. I like the idea of the oven/chimney. It radiates heat where it's need most and eliminates smoke. A lot of work went into building the shelter.
Food, clothing, shelter. Everything else is abundance!

@@idacow8237 what a 🐮
@@idacow8237 seriously. This took a couple days to build. To cut that many short logs with a chainsaw would take several hours. Doing it by hand would take most of a day and leave you with a sore body.

All the TH-cam channels, with guys building these amazing shelters, are in forests that supply perfectly straight logs for building. Dying to see what one of these would look like if in a wood full of twisty oak or maple or something that’s an OCD nightmare of non symmetrical wood.
Yes. I would like to see shelters built in desert sand. Or thin resource fields & mountains.
I live in Texas, only straight trees are in peoples yards. Show me one with twisty oaks.
@@AlexR604 we've got them in Oregon.
Just have to add the extra step of canting the logs, its a bit of a pain in the ass but manageable
What I like about this vid is: "better build a shelter, just for tonight. Oh wait, there's a perfectly square-cut tree trunk I can use for an anvil. Isn't Mother Nature wonderful"
I love watching these things and this shelter is way above the usual. However, with each one I want to run in there, lay out fresh straw, cover it with tarps, layer down quilts and simmer warm cocoa beside the fire. It’s a Mom thing I guess.
