Godox AD400Pro Overview
Featuring a 2.4 GHz wireless X system with a range of up to 328', the AD400Pro Witstro All-In-One Outdoor Flash from Godox is a versatile tool compatible with several TTL systems including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic options. It offers up to 400Ws with nine steps of output power, ranging from 1/1 to 1/256, and comes with a powerful 21.6V/2600mAh lithium-ion battery pack that provides up to 390 full-power flashes in outdoor situations and location shooting. Alternatively, you can run the monolight on AC power with an optional adapter.
The AD400Pro Witstro features a high-speed sync mode that works with shutter speeds up to 1/8000 second, offering flash durations from 1/240 to 1/12,820 second. Another unique setting is its Stable Color Temperature Mode, which tightly controls color to keep temperature changes within ±75K across the entire power range. Despite these impressive characteristics, it manages to keep recycling times low at 0.01-0.9 seconds to capture peak action and every fleeting gesture. A 30W LED modeling lamp is onboard to help preview how the light is falling on your subject.

The newest member of the R2 Family of Wireless is a Middle Child! Big Brother to the eVOLV200 morphing pocket flash and Kid Brother to the MasterFlash XPLOR600 Pro cordless monolight. Weighing in at birth at just over 4 pounds 8 ounces, but don't let the diminutive size fool you. This babe can slim down to a more compact package for work on the go by shedding the rear handle and swivel mount, using the incorporated Godox style modifier reflector mount. Just got my unit in (Belgium). I learned that your statement at the 3:35 mark is actually incorrect: you CAN mount the standard reflector after installing the Bowens mount adapter. Just take off the back part of that reflector (which is a 2-part design) and yo're in business. The procedure is detailed in the manual (page 30). So one setup takes Bowens mount modifiers, Godox mount accessories and the standard reflector - the latter with or without the announced gris, color gels, snoot etc.

Tip is the front modifier comes apart, so it is able to be used as a protector when the bulb is installed. Just using the front half. No need to worry
I wished it had a portable head though as the 600 has as accessory.

...This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! As noted below the AD200's great but not enough light outside in certain circumstances, and the AD600 can be too large /too powerful for the majority of my needs... the 400 is amazingly small for what it does, and weighs just a bit LESS than two AD200's plus the dual-head mount, plus it has a far better LED light... AND I'll now be able to use different manufacturer's modifiers with the adaptor?? Fantastic! Now my AD200's can be used as fill/backlighting... Kudos Godox!!

I know you're very busy, but since you're about the only one who gets these models before the public..
Would it be possible for a more in depth opinion piece on the 400? Maybe "after a month" or something where you talk about the strength/trust of the "new" mount and using the Bowens adapter with heavier modifiers. I have a couple of the older 360 units with battery packs and I don't always need TTL, but wondering about the 'upgrade' since I think I can get more power/bursts with the 360 batteries..
Would love to see an update video comparing the AD400 Pro power output in a few modifiers (standard 7" reflector, softboxes, etc) vs the AD-B2 and two AD200s, to see if they are indeed the same/which one is more efficient, and also the modeling light on them.
Also, a comparison between the AD400 Pro and the original AD600 (which can be gotten for very cheap now)

Excellent per usual Rob! I was looking at adding the 600Pro to my kit mainly because of the modelling light for my in-studio stuff. But I never really need the full 600 watts of the AD600 is all of my use cases. I already own the AD360 and that is powerful enough for everything I have used it for. All that being said, the 400Pro would be right up my alley along with an AD200 as a hair light or background separation whatever!

Great review as always, Cant Thank you enough. I now have 2 AD600's and 1 AD200. Im waiting for my backordered Round Head for the 200 and even more so for the Pentax Version of the Transmitter as I have a Pentax 645Z and K'1's as well as Canon equipment. One thing that was missing for me in this Video was seeing the "non-Pro" Ad600 next to the new 400 for comparision as well, Any chance of you adding that in your next video. Oh, as I have decided to sell my ProFoto B1's its great to know that I can purchase at a pretty low price an adapter that can use my ProFoto modifiers, particularly the Beauty Dish.
Hi Robert. I had a question about the AD200. How would you recommend setting it up for outdoor headshots/portraits in late afternoon light? Would I want to use a softbox with it at all times or would using the round head on the AD200 yield the same results (no softbox)?
I love this. Just bought a second one. The light is nicer then the Ad200. It’s spills light more evenly. And yeah it’s less a pain in the ass then putting 2 Ad200 together plus it’s lighter and more stable plus I trust one light then trying to figure out for sure if my 2 Ad200 is working perfectly in sync and same power. Plus it matches my other Ad400. I think for higher end jobs it makes more sense then carrying a bunch of Ad200s and winging it

I just got into flash photography a couple of months ago. I bought 2 Xplor 600 pros for use outdoors doing high-volume sports photography. If these 400s had come out sooner, i would have saved some pennies!
I think that’s why the 600 came out first lol.
Just got mine for $575 last week. I have to say everything about it screams Professional. Super high quality. Solid. Much better than the original 600. I tend to use 2 AD200's on my outdoor shoots, and given the weight of the 400, I will probably keep it in studio unless I have my assistant with me as I have lost 3 flashes and softboxes on recent shoots from light stands crashing down, one even in the ocean. You need to have a good heavy duty stand to use this with, especially if you have it 7 feet and above in the air. I used the 400 at a wedding this weekend in a huge church, and stuck this thing in the back and bounced the light off the ceiling, it worked AMAZINGLY. Plenty of power and the pics looked fantastic, exposure very even. Godox is my most FAVORITE company in the photography world right now. All other companies should takes notes and please their customers accordingly with quality products at affordable prices.

Rob, I enjoy your videos what I would like to see made available are non-ttl versions of both Xplor 600 Pro and Xplor 400 Pro for about $200 cheaper in price. I have a flash meter and for the work, I do TTL is a feature I prefer not to pay for.
I watched one of your previous videos and was excited about the the tenth stop adjustments added to the AD600 Pro. Were they added to the AD400 or do you think we have to wait for an update?
Someone talked to Godox today and the production model of the AD400 Pro will have 1/10 stop power adjustment. Mine just doesn’t because it left the factory before the production model was complete
Thanks for the review and comparison. Love your in-detail insights into the godox lineups. I was wondering ... its hard to tell from images... how is the the distance from the Flash"ring" to the bowens mount. The AD600 Pro tube seems to be an inch more far out than the AD400 Pro. Therefore the Tube might protrude further into modifiers. I feel that is quite an advantage. On a second view the Tube ring seems to be more pushed to the top of the bulb inside the AD400. Do you see a difference in the tube designs ?

Thanks for the info. I was always wondering how two AD200's stack up against a single AD400Pro and you seemed to have answered it. If they are close, then I'll probably just buy the bracket and a second AD200 for flexibility (2 lights when I need it, and I'll have two separate lights for when I don't). I actaully also saw some demos of the dual AD200 bracket and it does seem like it is a good option for people who already own an AD200 and want to add just a bit more power by adding a second light. Sure the AD400 Pro is probably faster to setup and recycles faster, but if one already has an AD200, then you can get double the power for about $360 more, versus spending another $650 on a new separate light.

Have no way to confirm other than cross comparing my previous numbers. I can guarantee though, it’s ultra close.
In your experience does it have enough power to overpower the midday sun with a soft box on it.

Mine wasn’t, but I have pre-production firmware on it so that’s not a surprise given that update happened after I got it. It’s supposed to ship with it
Thanks so much for your in-depth look at these recent Godox releases. I ended up getting an AD400 pro, and it arrived yesterday! I haven't had much chance to put it through its paces, but one thing I've noticed just from test firing, is that it's not making that 1 second recycle time at full power. More like 1.4 seconds. Did you find this in your tests?
No definitely kept up at 1s for me. Try doing a full charge on the battery?
Hey Robert, really enjoying your videos on de Godox products! I'm going to be getting a studio pretty soon (about 30 X 12 feet) and am looking for a setup that I can use in it but also take on location. Do you think a two AD400 pro setup would be a good jumping off point? I'm a little worried about having either too much power for if I have the modifiers really close to my subject in the studio or not enough for in sunny conditions. Do you thing the AD400s are a good balance?

So the color is stable, are the exposures also stable? With the AD200, I sometimes see variations in power (about a third of a stop).

Dunno about the Profoto/Broncolor, but the Bowen’s is a dense plastic, similar to the exterior of the body of the Pro Models.
What equipment do you recommend to get into indoor/outdoor family/senior portraits? ($1000 budget) I only own the A7iii w/ 85mm f/1.8 and Tamron 28-75mm

1. I prefer the round head because the light quality difference is insignificant such that it’s worth it for me due to the ease of gelling. As soon as it’s available, I’m going all round heads and leaving the barebulb/fresnel at home
2. Budget power (especially if you don’t care to have TTL). The price you can get a new or used manual AD600 for is great. Not all the bells and whistles but crazy capabilities outdoors for cheap.
I have Ad200 and flashpoint 360 TTL. Finding I love the 200 and the 360 performs Albert similar but hate not having a modeling light. Is the modeling light enough to see in a studio setting where your light spread is to avoid having to take so many test shots? Leaning towards two ad400s for this reason

Robert Hall: I am a bit concerned after watching a video from fstoppers suggesting that the ad400 pro falls way short on its flash duration at the lowest power. Have you done one of your metering tests to confirm?

No, you should not charge it while in use. It can cause the battery to be unstable and swell.
Thanks for this great video, it helps a lot on deciding what is used for each item. I have one question. I am thinking to start a new small studio for dancers photography, this will include portraits, headshots and some dance jump that requires to freeze the motion. My idea is to have 3 lights set up by using 1x ad400pro and 2xad200pro. Please what is your though about this light setting. Do you thing it will work? Some people are not agree but they have not try yet that lights so better to ask you.

Question…I already have 2 AD200 Pros and the ADB2. I was to introduce another main light for photos. Should I get the AD400 Pro and have the AD200’s for fill, back, etc OR should I double my current setup and have AD200’s to just got bananas with when I don’t need the power output of the ADB2?
You can attach the cover while the bowens adapter is installed by removing one part of the barrel of the cover

During charging, should both the LED indicators on the charger AND those that are on the battery should be flashing?
Indicators on my charger are flashing but not on the battery itself. Does that mean the battery is fully charged?

Was looking at the Profoto B1x and B10's but have kept seeing the Godox system. Looks like they're making quality products at a fair price. Need to update my reliable but aging Quantum Qflash/pocket wizard set up. I'm so used to working in feet - can these be set to feet instead of output? I imagine the TTL comes in handy during receptions. And a practical/usable high speed synch for a fun/artist shot here and there. Very cool.

Not in the samples. No. There’s no such thing as a soft barebulb.

From what I've seen, there isn't a non-TTL version of the AD400 available. For those who don't need (or want) TTL in a flash, the price for the AD400 with TTL is the same as the AD600 non-TTL. I really wish that the AD400 was available in non-TTL at a lower price point as I like the smaller size and don't need 600ws.

Hi Robert while I agree that the 600pro is not that great on a boom but are we forgetting the extension head? I think for both the 400 and 600pro the extension head will be the best option if attached on a boom or even just on a slim lightstand. I have played with both 400-600pro and quite frankly I ended up buying the 600pro because the price difference was not big enough for me to justify buying the 400pro. I think as a professional you will always appreciate the extra stop (or almost a full stop should I say) and also not to mention not having to go full blast from time to time. However feature wise is there any feature other than power that is one over the other? (Just in case if I decide to get one more Godox pro series light in my kit)
Not forgetting the extension head at all. That’s a known option but comes at the loss of some output. But no, other than that the featureset is identical between the two.
The 400 is slightly more versatile if you want to use different mounts.
I have 2 ad200pro and love them, however, the modelling light is pretty weak and almost useless, therefore I am considering buying ad400pro if the modelling light is useful. I am doing the newborn photography, and could you please give me some advices, if the modelling light on ad400 is useful? Thanks in advance.

Nope I've never tried it because I dislike the process of adjusting the delay based on the shutter speed / potential gradients across images. Neither of whichI have time to deal with in my work, so I pick either power loss (HSS) or ND.

Why the round heads as opposed to the bare bulbs on the AD200?
I have just received my AD400pro and checked that the problem of not being able to attach the attached reflector when using the bowens mount adaptor has been fixed. The reflector can be split into two parts, and if you don't attach the lower part, it becomes narrower and can be attached to the godox mount.

How is the QSB 34 low profile mount with the AD400Pro?
I currently have 4 AD600 (non pro) and 3 AD200 lights (I want a fourth) and use the AD200 90% of the time because they offer enough power.
This light confuses me as to why Godox went with this light at all. You make great points with it but in the end I just feel the flexibility of having two AD200’s versus a single AD400 is no contest. The price difference between two AD200’s and a single AD400 is only $50 (with the AD200’s being cheaper).

Looking forward to seeing what you think about the MagMod MagBox as I am on the fence about pulling the trigger (it’s not cheap) but really impressed with the videos I am seeing.
I think their overall strategy is to not concern themselves about cannibalizing sales and focus on making the perfect lighting product for tons of different photographers. I know the AD200 was a home run for thousands of photographers, but it’s clear that doesn’t stop them from making something more powerful for those who feel the AD600 Pro is too big and AD200 not fast/accurate enough.
I am thinking, AD400 has this over 2xAD200 + AD2B: Faster recycle, lighter, simpler/faster setup, much stronger LED light.
I've been in blue light situations where the LED modeling light on my AD600 pro allowed me to focus without turning on my focus assist. I like to do behind the scenes vids for some of my art directors and I find that red assist light to be horrible on video.
just purchased the Flashpoint XPLOR400 thinking it was the Godox AD400. Are they the same? I ask cause I'm interested in getting the AD200Pro and want to make sure one remote will trigger all strobes.
My problem with the ad400pro is I like using a parabolic with head inside. Connonmark. With extension heads it's light weight in the modifier and small. Without I have to mount the ad400pro inside the modifier.
I like it's size. I need an extension head for my wanted use.

Like the ad 400 light, the round head for the ad200 I can't s the point other than to make it look like the profoto flashgun! Plus I use magmod so the round head is kind of redundant! .
They've must have made some update. My AD4000pro protective cap breaks apart and the top portion fits inside the BOWENS MOUNT. So you don't have to take the bulb out..
yeah they updated the production model so the reflector I have is different than everyone elses.
Just a question, how does the power of the ad400 pro compare with the power of the ad 600 1st Gen?
The AD600 and AD600 Pro have the same output in a reverse softbox (which is where I got the .4 comparison), so it would be the same difference.
But in anything forward facing the AD600 will always meter much hotter in the center of a rear-mounted modifier because the bulb creates a way less even pattern of light than these pro bulbs. You can see more in my “AD600 Pro FAQ” video.

Have u found ur answer? Im confused between getting a AD600PRO vs AD400pro. I have the same auestion too and also I like the weight advantage of 400pro but If at all I wish to take an action shot with an AD400pro will it be enough to freeze motion?
@@saibhargavamanda8583 I think it's fine to boom the ad400. Cause I do some people booming the old ad600 and they seemed fine. But for freezing acrion I believed theres more competent people to answer this, cause if never seen or try it before.
Can the ad200 pro fit the dual Bowens mount? Can the the ad 200 and ad200 pro be together on the bowens mount?
