It reminds me of Paul Wylie's free skates at the 1990 and 1991 nationals. The way the crowd reacts, the emotional interpretation of the music... i miss these kind of performances, and we just don't see them anymore.
I love this performance, but he was just one clean 3lutz away from winning the title. So close! Still, he earned a spot on the Olympic team which was so thrilling to see!
Even with the mistake on the 3lutz, I think he should have won the long program here and finished at least second. I don't know why the judges were so harsh on him in the component scores. He was really tailor-made for this scoring system but the judges never really rewarded him that well for it. Goes to show you that you can put any system in place as far as judging but if the judges still go on reputation it doesn't matter.
I've always come back to this performance from time to time. Matt should be named to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame!
I have watched this program many, many times, and it always moves me. it gives me chills. The perfect balance of athleticism and art. Love Matt.
The most impactful Men's performance I can recall from US Nationals. ❤❤
