They won't drop them, John is wrong lol. It's their lightning in a bottle they aren't gonna let that go. Look at the Wii U. They aren't gonna make that mistake again of changing something that was working again.
@@the_pentah00k58 Yea besides my point though. It didn't come with any. It came with the pad and console only. Most people just thought it was a Wii add on not a new console lol
I remember in 2022 Nintendo's president said the console was in its mid life cycle. It'll be funny if Nintendo go another year without announcing new hardware
I also don't use the Joycons when docked as I prefer the pro controller. However, the vast majority of the Switch user base doesn't use their Switch like that. People buying this as a family type system tend to entirely rely on Joycons. So dumping them isn't very practical for the largest part of their consumer base, especially at the cost of a higher price tag to include a single pro controller, where they'll have to buy at least one more... if not three if they want to play something like Mario Party. Then again, perhaps they make bigger Joycons or they continue use the Joycon, but it just doesn't dock with the unit. If it is bigger, it's going to be interesting to see how they handle this without screwing it up.
Yeah I don't either use joycons ever when docked, but I do use em in handheld and especially on the go gaming. And usually I prefer to use them detached from console. So I hope they do keep the Joycon, just update them maybe a bit bigger size and more comfortable design with magnetic sticks to solve drifting issues and I'm sold 👌😂
i will say that buying 3 sets of joycons is the same price as buying 3 pro controllers. the main difference would be the inability to use the individual joycons per player, for games like mario kart and mario party that only need what a joycon has. if we're being honest though, nobody actually enjoys using them like that... it's only good for small children. maybe if they made them bigger it would be nicer to hold.
I don't think they'll get rid of the joy con model, maybe they'll introduce a next gen joycon with a new size/specs, but I think having a portable multiplayer system is too much of a marketing point/unique feature to get rid of. Also not needing multiple controllers and whatnot.
I have a regular Switch. It’s already awkward as a handheld outside of the house (feels too large for the bus). 8inch is fine for at home in bed but hardly feels like a proper portable device
@@tokyopinokyoyeah. And when the Switch 2 comes out your only option will be a huge device with a dumb 8 inch screen. You'll get a lite version years later.
There is no chance Nintendo abandons joycons. They are a huge money maker selling people additional colors and special editions. It also allowed them to skirt around a lot of the uproar over joycons failing as often as they do, as you can just replace them. If they’re tied to the device you have a much bigger problem on your hands.
Every time I see the PlayStation Portal I want one. I’ll never actually bother getting one in it’s current configuration, but the industrial design is spot-on
On the topic of joycons, I was thinking about this last night... Everyone keeps saying they want the Switch 2 to be backwards compatible with games (which I very much agree with), but I haven't seen anyone question or mention whether it will be backwards compatible with the Joycons, Pro controller, or other peripherals. (Thinking about this has also convinced me that they won't call the Switch 2 the 'Switch Pro' because then they'd have to release a 'Switch Pro *Pro* Controller')
Maybe Nintendo will assume that everyone who buys a Switch 2 will already have a pair of Joy-Cons for games that use them detached just like they assumed everyone who bought a Wii U already owned Wii remotes
I don't know what John's smoking it will definitely have joycons lol they would never ditch that concept since it's been SO successful. They won't include a pro controller type controller because they want to sell you one of those extra... I think John's way off here.
The thought of non-removable joycon really makes me nervous... because the Joycons were terribly uncomfortable, and the thought of being stuck with them in hand held mode is a potential deal breaker.
Yeah that would be terrible and if a controller broke, you'd have to buy an entire new system. Joycons are great because you can swap them out and buy aftermarket ones.
It would be great if the dock could have some kind of IR sensors that could solve the joycon issues with house of the dead. The bar with with the wii and joycons do not work properly but Namco hit it perfectly with the Gcon 3 sensors.
The screen size also has game design implications. For a lot of titles, Nintendo was kind of wrestling with having to support big-screen playing but also make sure things weren't too small on the Switch Lite. Fonts and UI needed to be bigger. "Hidden objects" needed to be more obvious, harsher colors, bigger animations and sparkles and glows. It made things a little uglier on a big screen, for the sake of readability. For some games, they did favor the TV experience and the text ended up really small even on the regular Switch. With an 8-inch screen, I hope the differences won't be as drastic, and it'll give them more room to be more subtle with their design sense. Anyway, a generation of kids grew up using iPads. They'll absolutely be ready for an 8-inch handheld. For me personally, I hardly ever used my Switch in handheld mode because I felt the screen was too small for the types of games I played on it, and my hands always cramped up from how uncomfortably small the controllers are in my big-ish hands. So if the controllers are also a little bigger, I'd welcome it though I wouldn't mind if they still skewed smaller as long as we still get a big player base to incentivize devs to give it decent priority.
I think it will just get bigger joy-cons, it doesn't make much sense to drop the concept of them. Bigger controllers could mean full sized buttons (hopefully with a proper d-pad this time), bigger batteries and maybe even adaptive triggers. Hopefully if they make another Lite model it will still be able to dock this time.
Honestly if this has built-in non-detatchable controls, I could see them putting it out without an included Pro Controller. Basically a dockable Switch Lite, but without the Lite. Maybe even the dock is a separate purchase?
Bigger doesnt seem better after a certain point. Something the size of a Lite with OLED and display out would be great. Analogue Pocket is looking more attractive.
@@PumatSol Yeah true. For the money though, factoring the Pocket dock and cart adapters, MIDI/Sync cables, it's probably as much as getting a Switch 2 with basic accessories and a physical launch game will be so yeah like $500 either way. That's if you have enough old cartridges to make it worth it in the first place.
Im not sure why they keep saying that Nintendo will remove the Joycons just because its gonna be a big device... Just make the joycons bigger too lol, look at the Lenovo Legion Go.
@@mikeuk666 One can only hope. Although I have to say I’ve only had drift in my og joycons. Everything I’ve bought in the last 3~4 years, no issues yet and I only play handheld with joycons. Everyone stop talking until Nintendo announced it. And Nintendo’s silence is almost as deafening and irritating as Team Cherry ignoring that people would like to hear something about Silksong more than once a year.
I'm surprised by this discussion. LCD doesn't mean "bad screen". The new mini LED screens are almost as good (in some cases better, see Sony's new references tvs, than OLED). They won't keep the joy-cons. They will have a new control design. Why would they keep something that's constantly failing and the need to warranty repair them etc?
It's one part of the Joy-Con that's failing, which is the sticks. All they need to do is put some shiny new Hall effect sticks in and then no more worries for them.
They won't do the because then they will be admitting legally that their current Joy-Cons is flawed. They will get a new patent for a new controller and use their new joy stick patent (magnetic fluid design) or something like that. @@ironicdivinemandatestan4262
Fyi, joy cons are the only way to play and the best way to party play. So much more fun, easily accessible for anyone. Unlike other console stuff, the best multiplayer experience is same room/side by side.
One thing the Switch2 doesen't need: A bigger screen. The screen of the OG Switch is big enough, OLED is nice, but ... no need to go bigger. I still want it to be a normal handheld, and the Switch is a pretty big handheld allready.
I think the 7 inch OLED is perfect and I only play in handheld with aftermarket joycons. If they could keep the same body size but eek out an extra inch by reducing the bezels even more, it would be perfect. I would hate an even larger device like the playstation portal thing or a steam deck, those things are too large.
@@DaveSimkus As nice as the size is. If the Switch 2 is gonna have PS4ish GPU horsepower than you kind of need a bigger size due to the cooling and battery needs alone. There is good reason every PS4 class handheld in recent years is around the size of a steam deck. Its simply because it's impractical to put that kind of power in a smaller form factor. Look at the thousand dollar iphones and ipads that need to render the RE4 Remake port at 300p internal while completely destroying the battery, and those M1 chips are some of the most efficient mobile chips on the market.
@@11cat123the ipad runs it at like 720p upscalled to 1080p. The m1 chip and the larger surface area (better cooling) makes a difference. It could be better though, on an apple m1 pro(base m1) the performance is a lot better.
I personally hope it still has attachable joycon like controllers because they enabled you to do more than just detach them to play on your TV. A major selling point of the switch was playing multiplayer games on one switch with two joycons. I've witnessed many people playing their switch this way at parties and elsewhere. I feel that making the switch 2 an all in one handheld will really limit it's versatility.
I hate that you’re right. The dumbest thing was people thinking we’d get Switch 2 in like 2021… when have we ever had a 3 or 4 year Nintendo console lifespan!? And with the success of the Switch!? Why would the just cut it short!!? 😡 Even the Wii U, Nintendo’s worst main console flop, had a 4 and a half year life. 😤
Lmao why? Americans are so poor they cry when they have to pay anything more than $199 for a gaming console, imagine how they're gonna cry if the Switch 2 was $449 😂
@vickybengaliIgnorant comment. Modern OLED screens don’t have this problem with normal regular use. To burn in an OLED screen, requires a user to purposely go out of their way to damage their display, by forcing static images at maximum brightness for dozens if not hundreds of hours at a time. The average OLED screen user doesn’t do that to their devices. 🤦🏻♂️
I would have loved an HDR handheld if for no other reason than to show people how good HDR is. I still hear from so many people who have never seen good HDR and think HDR is terrible. Once you have seen HDR on an OLED or good LCD you just can't go back.
I wonder if they just make the dock (maybe it's a 4K dock now?) and external controls an add-on, and have it be compatible with the old dock and controllers. There's 100 million+ of the things out there and those first-year purchases are probably going to be dominated by existing users upgrading. Like the 3DS and the charger. Keeps the BOM down a bit, helps them hit $400 with a decently fast device, also makes the box smaller which counts for a fair bit when you're shipping millions of them. A bigger screen does a good job of conveying "this is a newer, significantly better thing" to existing owners, and we've all got docks and controllers.
It's definitely gonna need to be a new dock with the device since the only dock can only output 1080p60 max they're gonna include one that has HDMI 2.1 like the other systems which can output 4k120 with vrr support im not saying any game with run at that but at the very least it can output that for basic things like the menu and TH-cam

I disagree with joycons being removed. If a controller broke, you could swap it out or get aftermarket ones to suit your needs. It also doesn't feel flimsy they way he said it does. Also, the OLED switch still has some bezel around the display, they could potentially keep almost the same size but increase the display by an inch.
I think here's a rare case of John being mistaken. The joycons are an incredible value proposition for the average consumer. You get the handheld, a normal controller with the grip, and two Wiimote-like controllers with the straps. There's three ways to play in one package. I agree they might completely redesign them for a better execution, but I think the modular, versatile approach is a must for the mass market appeal the Switch has.
The removable joy cons are genius. It’s what enables wii and motion controlled games to be played docked. Split joycons are the best way to play with gyro controls, and imo gyro is essential in console fps. And imo the huge variety of control options switch offers is part of why I think it’s a great machine. Other nice things about the joycons are that they enable 2 player at any time with split joycons. Also, playing with them split in both hands is very comfortable.
The discussion around the joy cons felt a bit disconnected from the reality to me... I've seen non gamer friends and family who all have a Switch for their kids, and they all use Joy Cons as their primary or even sole controller. Kids shares joy cons, they have preferences for some colours, etc. I feel It would be a mistake for Nintendo to get away from them. Also, Nintendo is still releasing new Joy Cons every few months (like the upcoming pink one for Peach), which tells me there is a market for it. Also the whole marketing around the Switch and its logo is based on the Joy Cons, would be weird to get away from them for a new console which will probably aim to have a smooth transition.
Just make bigger joy-cons. I never expected a Switch 2 to have used the same joy-cons as the Switch(otherwise it would look no different to Switch 1 in pics)...or even for them to attach in exactly the same way. If the handheld aspect did have the controls built-in., I wouldn't be shocked to see them bundle an evolution of the Wiimote/nunchuk rather than a pro controller..or something like VR controllers..where you have one in each hand (or 1 per person for two player).
Okay now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo goes with a completely different name for their next system unrelated to Switch in order to help minimize consumer confusion. I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch successor uses its own set of proprietary joy cons.
Where does this "no joycon" idea come from. Joycons allow for the most relaxed gaming positions. Allow to share the experience anywhere... The only issue is drift.
Dude they aren’t getting rid of joy-cons it wouldn’t be a switch anymore wtf you smoking. The legion go has good removal controllers and is an 8 inch device.
Maybe a clam shell style console, but somehow it will dock for TV use? *Maybe the top half will snap off like the Windows Surface for docking? 🤔 Just putting that out there 🔮
Clamshell would be awesome. The 3DS was perfectly portable because you could shut it closed and put it in your pocket without damaging the screen or buttons. The Switch really isn't that portable, you have to carry a case with it.
With so a big screen size, Switch 2 will be much closer to Wii U (which, I remind, was a failure) than to the more portable Switch 1. Playing at home on so big screen will be ok, but going with this outside becomes an uncofortable problem. In my personal opinion 6-7" would be a better solution.
7 inch screen of the Switch OLED is a big enough screen size. It's just unfounded rumours guesses at a 8 inch screen for the Switch sucessor! Main market Japan adults have smaller hands than western countries. Plus also young kids will be a big market for the Switch sucessor.
I really think they are going to keep the removable controllers, but make them more 'pro' controller like. It would increase the base cost of the machine quite a bit if they had to include a pro controller with the console to allow users to play it connected to a TV. It is possible that they sell the dock separately and sell it as a handheld primarily, but I'm thinking that's less likely.
An approximately 8'' display could fit the current Switch chassis, if there's next to no bevel, which is of course unlikely. But it's technically possible ~
My kingdom for a switch two version that doesnt have a screen and is more compact because I've never undocked my switch to play it mobile since it originally launched
Couldn't they just add an extender for the joy-cons. Think like the motion plus adapter? So it would be something like new joy-cons would be larger but previous ones would work with the adapter or the joy-cons just remain the same with adapters included. I can't see them taking that away because of the loss of single console multiplayer on the go.
I wish DF would remember that while technically impressive features such as OLED are nice they also increase the cost and most people don't want to have to pay money for all these components they don't actually need. If people want an OLED then wait for them to release that rather than criticising Nintendo for doing the right thing. Personally I only use the Switch in docked mode so there's a lot of wasted components that I'm paying for that I don't really need.
It's not the right thing omitting the option of an oled model alongside a cheaper lcd model and only offer lcd for a while even possibly a few years after Switch 2, while people have seen Nintendo CAN make Oled handhelds as we've seen with Switch 1.
A non detachable controller would make me think about buying a steam deck instead. That’s pretty much the only reason haven’t bought the steam deck. I love the having the ability to play handheld then docking and playing with detachable controller without having to bring extra controllers to play docked. Plus it’s nice having the ability to replace controllers, if one breaks. If Switch 2 has non detachable controllers, if something breaks on the controller, you have to open the whole console.
Regarding OLED being 30% more in terms of cost, please remember that when you're selling 130m+ units just $1 per unit is literally hundred of millions. An OLED as standard would cost them over a billion. I can see why they'd want to put their money elsewhere. Conversely an upgraded unit selling at a premium is a great way to drive the price back up and boost margins.
Why you as a consumer should look for an excuse to a company to sell you an inferior device? I think as a consumer you should demand the best quality for your money. You buy the product for yourself and not to please the company, right?

The LCD Display on the Portal and also the Asus Rog Ally are very good. Yes I’d love OLED and I’m sure we’ll see it further down the line, but LCD is still pretty good.
Removing the joycons feature would be a terrible idea because if your brand new switch2 has drift you have to replace or repair the whole console, nobody wants that. Just make them better and more reliable. The joycons may seem useless for hardcore gamers but giving us the choice to use the controllers we want even in portable mode is amazing and a feature too. You are not forced to use on board controllers if you dont like em and that has been a major selling point for third party accesories too.
I'd be curious to see if the Switch 2 it will be able to use any sort of local dimming along with more modern LCD backlight technologies like QLED, Mini LED or even Micro LED? I feel with those technologies you can at least still get a pretty good picure on LCD screens, but otherwise going back to an LCD is going to be a very noticeable downgrade from the Switch OLED.

They can just make the joycons look slightly different and give the switch 2 a unique logo for marketing
they won't drop the joycons
They won't drop them, John is wrong lol. It's their lightning in a bottle they aren't gonna let that go. Look at the Wii U. They aren't gonna make that mistake again of changing something that was working again.

They're holding off on the oled so they can release a oled Switch2 as a "revision"
Also, joycons are great because if one breaks, you can swap it out or get different aftermarket ones.
They wouldn’t do it I’m sure. Joycon are a killer feature
Pro controller has digital triggers no? Why not use sn30pro+? Has analog triggers . Works much better in some games

No , that was just an L take by John
I don't know what John's smoking it will definitely have joycons lol they would never ditch that concept since it's been SO successful. They won't include a pro controller type controller because they want to sell you one of those extra... I think John's way off here.

I hope we get a console only edition. I rarely ever bring my switch with me anywhere
Yeh i cant use switch in handheld mode with joycons, carpal tunnel after 3 minutes.
You mean you bought different ones from a third party???
No issues with the switch lite and fixed controls
There would not be issues regarding malfunction if Nintendo stopped being such cheap feckers and spent $0.01 more on hall sensor joysticks.
Would it be possible for it to look like the PS Portal only you can pull the controllers off and re-connect them sans-plastjc shell?

It's one part of the Joy-Con that's failing, which is the sticks. All they need to do is put some shiny new Hall effect sticks in and then no more worries for them.

Agreed. Switch is just about right. Any larger is too large for me. I could even go slightly smaller. I loved my PSP.

Not from a business standpoint. You get to sell the same console twice with an OLED model in the future.
I would have loved an HDR handheld if for no other reason than to show people how good HDR is. I still hear from so many people who have never seen good HDR and think HDR is terrible. Once you have seen HDR on an OLED or good LCD you just can't go back.
The steam deck OLED is hdr

Every opinion that John states, is better to ignore it.
He always has shit or downright phobic opinions.
I don't care anymore about Switch 2 specs. JUST RELEASE IT ALREADY !!! I WILL BUYING IT'S DAY 1 !!! ❤❤❤

That’s not how glasses are supposed to sit on your face.
As long as they release a pocketable Switch 2 Lite down the road then I'm not that fussed how big the main unit is
With so a big screen size, Switch 2 will be much closer to Wii U (which, I remind, was a failure) than to the more portable Switch 1.
Legion Go has 8" LCD with detachable joycons.
Onboard controls would make me nervous considering how wide spread stick drift is with the original Switch
If they changed to the frictionless sticks it wouldn't be an issue. Knowing Nintendo they'll do it on the cheap and the controllers will drift.
The IPS screen of the PS Portal with 90 or 120hz would look nice
It's gonna just be 60
Regarding OLED being 30% more in terms of cost, please remember that when you're selling 130m+ units just $1 per unit is literally hundred of millions. An OLED as standard would cost them over a billion.
I can see why they'd want to put their money elsewhere. Conversely an upgraded unit selling at a premium is a great way to drive the price back up and boost margins.

They already sorta moved on from the Switch idea the day they released the Switch Lite which had no ability to dock or even remove the cons. They will continue to use the switch name if they feel it will help them sell units
Glad to see Oliver has finally escaped the purple GameCube hell he was trapped in. Congrats Ollie!
Without same room multiplayer. You’re asking them to remake a gameboy.
Could they remove joycons? if they go for backwards compatibility (as is likely to be the case) tehy can't exclude games which need joycons, like arms, 1 - 2 switch, and many others.
