Love seeing these laid back convos. Feels like sitting in a coffee shop and eavesdropping on a fun conversation at the next table over. As an aside, years ago I DNF'ed Wizard's First Rule without knowing anything about Goodkind's reputation.

Never read any of Terry Goodkind’s books, but I enjoyed the tv-series Legend of the seeker!

Mike, I LOVE your long form videos. They always get into interesting and unexpected topics.
About audiobooks - I have epilepsy so for me audio has always been a relief even way back from the days when one book was a gazillion cassettes. Having read literally thousands of audiobooks, here’s what I’ve learned - it’s a skillset. And by that I don’t mean speed. (I have a whole group of thoughts on listening speed.) Audio reading with complex books really isn’t something people can just plunge into. It’s like picking up a book in another language and blaming the language because the reader doesn’t understand. IMO that’s a pretty predictable outcome. Audio books are a gift for an awful lot of folks and I’m always a little sad when I hear BookTube folks kind of slip past the point just a bit.
Anyway, these are obviously only my thoughts.
PS - Beowulf is a top 10 read for me. Philip is right. 😉

I’m with Mike on taking a break as the best approach to reading Malazan. I loved the first 4 books but then started book 5 and couldn’t continue. I just needed to put it down for a while. But I’ll get back into it soon.

Maybe you should try interviewing Joe Hill first. If he agrees, maybe Mr. King will agree too.

For me audiobooks are 100% dependent on the narrator, I will know just by the sample available if I will be able to enjoy the book. For example, a British voice usually works the best for a fantasy novel. Once I tried to listen to a Blake Crouch book but it was narrated by one of the actors from my soap opera and I just could not listen. Rosamund Pike “Morraine” narrating Eye of the World is perfection!

Not everyone is going to like the same books.

Why would George bother to finish the series now? The network already stole his thunder. He moved on. Good for him.

I went out and bought Mists of Avalon thinking it was a classic. Then when I was researching the series to figure out what books I needed to buy to complete the series I found the articles on the author and I was absolutely horrified. I never throw books away, I threw that book away.

I had that book for years before I found out, same with Eddings. I threw them all away, too. There are some lines that can't be crossed.

I mean, the person who wrote it is dead, you dont change anything by reading it, if the book is good the book is good

Terry Goodkind is controversial because he said he doesn't write fantasy and he writes fantasy...lol wut? And his books are very preachy. I haven't read his books so I'm going off what I have read online. As a fantasy writer myself can't read fantasy right now lol.
