Good Afternoon! Back with an educational video that I hope sheds some light on a very prevalent issue. Sorry to bring such disappointing news - if you are like me and occasionally love to have your hair braided with synthetic hair. I am truly done!
Let me know what you think and please share this with someone else who wears braids!
Part 2 covers any questions raised here concerning Apple cider, Human hair sourcing, safety, ethics, and any other question you may have I likely answered here! th-cam.com/video/YBiHdQnzWxo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rzqQvFfqRGKLkJo8
😅 I added links to the description box 🗃️ if you are looking for safer alternatives for hair braiding or extensions and I will update the list as I learn more.
Feel free to leave suggestions or links to Safe, Ethical, and Fair-sourced extensions.
📣Addendum: 👂 I have already answered this question so many times in the comments section “Why is your hair braided with synthetic hair if you know it is bad for you?”
Answer: in the video, I am wearing an old twist-out style which I installed myself BEFORE I knew the information I was sharing with you. I filmed this video after doing research and while wearing an old hairstyle. For full transparency, I kept it in to show you I have also liked and worn synthetic hair like many Black women. In the video, I actually showed you the hair I used for this particular style.
Now that I know better that style and hair is no longer in my hair. In other words, after filming this video I took out the hair and will no longer wear it or any other synthetic hair.
Hope that makes sense to the many that have asked! One thing about me I am very transparent and my goal is always to be truthful.

I too have stopped using "hair extensions" & chemical relaxers for about 5 years now by God's grace. I've learned to maintain, care for & be content to my natural hair.
On the topic of harmful toxins & chemicals, make-up is another one to re-evaluate.

      Wow...how timely is this?
I took out my locks a few weeks ago. For sure I had no intentions of using human hair sacrificed to idols (plus stolen and even from corpses) or putting any chemicals but I thought synthetics and synthetic wigs were safe. I have been just natural these few weeks but thank goodness I waited.
The wool/crochet hair yes...was my 1st thought. I have seen beautiful styles with it. Thank you so very much for sharing this.

There are issues with human hair also. In some countries, women cut their hair to get rid of bad spirits or the hard session they have been through. Leaving the pain behind. Called New beginnings or New birth. I'm just saying that the best braids are your own natural beautiful hair.

Why? No one is forcing women to buy cheap synthetic crap to weave into their hair in order to lie about their natural hair length or for whatever sorry reason women use to explain wearing doll hair on their adult heads. Plus considering the fake nails and plastic eyelashes a lot of women adorn themselves with one would say that most of you are already screwed. So why the fear over another toxic item that could kill you but hasn't yet.

This is so true, synthetic braiding hair is dangerous. I have never been big on braid with added hair. Last summer I decided to get braids. Half way through getting my hair braided I started breaking out everywhere starting on my face. I was really itchy but I still got my hair finished. I was getting worse so I tried to wash the hair and that didn’t work. Over the next few days I was in agony and my face and ears were so swollen and I was uncontrollably scratching to the point where some spots were bleeding. I took Benadryl and even had to go to the ER for steroid shots. They asked what I had done differently and the only thing was the hair, they told me to take it out immediately because I was having an allergic reaction to it and it’s ingredients. I took it out and within a couple of days the swelling went down and the itching stopped. I never wore synthetic hair again.

Synthetic hair is OK, the issue is the chemical used. THE FIX: soak hair in warm water (not hot) for 20 minutes in vinegar. You'll see the chemicals rise to the top-it's a white film. Throw off that water and keep rinsing in lukewarm water until the water is clear. Let the hair air dry. This process gets rid of harmful chemicals and stops itching.
Edit to add: use gloves if you can, keeps the chemicals off your skin.

You did such an amazing job bringing this information to light. I gave up the relaxers in my early twenties. Now in my fifties. Most people don't put all the dots together and would never equate our hair and beauty regiments with warfare. There has been a war on the black woman's womb forever. Population control is real. There is no end to the nefarious ways that the enemy has tried to do this. Whether it is synthetic hair, perm, or glue for the wigs and eyelashes it is time for us to understand who is making products that target us and why. Just do a little critical thinking and you can see it clearly. We just have to take our emotions out of the equation long enough to stop being defensive about it and see it. Black women, it's time for us to love ourselves enough to put all of those poisons down and find creative ways to embrace our natural beauty. We are beautiful.❤

After my BC diagnosis I began researching what could have triggered this in an otherwise healthy person who does not drink, smoke and also generally eats healthy. The answer was just about every hair product, every soap, body spray, ALL make up, plastic plates/cups, food, including anything with artificial flabor and dyes, and more being laden with chemicals that disrupt: DNA, hormones, skin, major organs within the body. Some of the most popular brands are breaking us down one cell at a time with their products and kiling us slowly and we dont even know it until its too late. 😔 Some things that we use in every day life are wreaking havoc on our bodies. As a cosmetology educator, this is a MUST watch for my students. I will be adding this video to my lesson plan immediately!
As a stylist, I’m not a “braider”but sometimes have to braid for wig and weave installations. In recent years, I’ve opted to use thread to secure the braid down because so many clients are “allergic” to synthetic hair. Now we know what it really is.
Also, on a personal level, I’m one of the people who is severely irritated by synthetic hair. In past times I’ve had to go thru vigorous pre-washing and soaking with apple cider vinegar before I could wear braided extensions. Thank you so much for the better options you’ve provided! I’ve also been on a quest to only style my own hair without extensions.
Being part of the beauty industry for many years, I’ve always said and thought that there should be some type of Association for this industry (other than the general state regulations) to help better regulate products and practices. Just like our foods, we must be diligent in thoroughly researching, reading packages, labels and ingredients for our hair products!
This video was much needed. Thanks again!🙏🏾

We just can't catch a break. I had fibroids which resulted in me having a complete hysterectomy. I actually went natural before it became popular about 15 years ago. There weren't as many products available as there are now. It was very hard to find stylist who specialized in natural hair at that time as well. I have been relaxing my hair since my teens. I do wear weaves, extensions, braids and all of it since forever. I change up my hair on a very regular basis. I have always loved the different styles that relaxing my hair affords me. My hair is a different type of hair. There isn't an edge control and other products that will allow me to do what I can without relaxing, which is why I went back to relaxing my hair. It's absolutely frustrating, time consuming and down right embarrassing. Thank you for your extensive research and time sharing this information with us. I will start some type of research to see about going natural (help me Lord because the way this hair is set up. It's terrible.) If stylists refuse to allow me to bring my shampooed extensions, then I don't use their service, I'll just do the style myself!! Some braiders require you to purchase the hair they sale as a part of the service package, which I don't like. It should be optional.

I have said this since 1985 when I got my hair twisted back then flat twist were the in style in Harlem but I ended up losing a lot of hair when I took it out. It cut my hair, now I see women patting their head and I said it’s the chemicals that is burning the scalp

Oh My! I remember traveling from Queens to Billie Jeans Uptown in '85 to get my hair braided. Those were the good 'ole days.

This is heartbreaking news because like many of you I love braids. I ignorantly thought braiding was better than wigs since you know the scalp can still breathe, my my my how wrong I was.
I also want to encourage the black community that this is a great business opportunity for a black owned business to produce anti-toxic, non allergic hair for us to continue to wear our styles.
So far ezbraids and wool can be used as alternatives;) Hope that helps…

I encourage my people to go natural and use diy hair masks to grow our gorgeous afro hair. I used extensions for decades and decided to stop 4 years ago, because I became more connected to Nature ; I thought that I couldn't continue using all this plastic on my hair and trash Mother Gaia. Thanks doctor for the teaching.

@@yardleyj9391 yeah I’m working on growing my hair too, but at the moment I can’t deal with it everyday. Perhaps you can share with us some tips and easy DIY hairstyles would also appreciate kid friendly styles, thanks;)

I will definitely check out your recommendations. There is a company called “Rebundles” that makes braiding hair out of banana fibers if anybody wants to check it out.

There is a report about airline stewardesses who got sick from flame resistance fabric. I'm not surprised. Funny I stopped having asthma issues when I switched to microlocs.

These companies are putting the braider and their family at risk considering many of them do hair out of their home.

I am also done with synthetic hair once I remove my current set of crochet hair. I’ve been on a journey to improve my overall health so eliminating synthetic hair chemicals will contribute to my goals.

I thank you for the insight as I think it’s extremely important to call out. I would also like to add that 90% of the things we eat, wear, drink, etc are toxic in countries like America and other European countries. If ladies you are eating McDonalds or most fast foods that’s worse than the chemicals in synthetic hair for your body. We should look at EVERYTHING we are putting on and in our body while also understanding that it’s extremely challenging (not impossible) to not be exposed to chemicals if you live in America and other countries with similar regulations and policies.
