Re-calibrating the Instruo Oscillators was a very good idea :)

- Whilst recording the last video for TH-cam, I was actually having a bit of a nightmare keeping the Instruo oscillators in tune with the Moog's. It turns out the 1v/oct tracking was somewhat off on the TS-L and Saich, so spend a morning this week re-calibrating the 1v/oct inputs on both the oscillators, and well, that's made a big difference!
This recording is a bit of a slow burner - so It takes a while to get going - but it eventually gets to a point where all 11 oscillators in my rig are firing on all cylinders. The Saich is my new favourite oscillator now it's actually tracking correctly :)

There’s a bit around the 47 min mark where I tried to find a nice way to transpose the sequence. Wish I hadn’t bothered. It ended up sounding crap no matter what. Just pretend that bit didn’t happen, and then it’s not too bad….. (‘‘twas but a personal practice, but the whole thing annoyingly ended up quite nice apart from that bit)
Mistakes from today are inspirations for tomorrow. It' all good. Thanx for sharing your session
It's all good. Rob I have a question for you. Everytime I hear you building up a sequence I start to imagine my own melodies with them; are there ever sounds and sequences in your mind while your composing that you cant quite figure out how to make them work or build while your in the middle of a session?
Edit: you know what you want the sound to be, but you can't quite create it at the time?
@@ATozz-1337 not really. I tend to just let the synth do its thing, the only thing I’m needed for is to keep it all in tune. If it’s in tune, just play the same note for an hour, it’s still going to sound good :)
It’s quite temperamental, and has a bit of a life of its own tbh. Sometimes it wants to be angry, sometimes it wants to be polite. Even a slight dip in temperature changes it’s character.
So I don’t really make any plans, I just follow what the synth wants to do at that moment in time

How to not fall in love
Have to be honest the mixing and sound in general is better when you properly do it in a DAW or hybrid setup, the vibe is 100% on spot just sucks modular will always have this low end feel to it compared to polished music. But the fact you can spit out beats like this in some kind of improvisation is extremely impressive and I love it. Could listen these sets for weeks.

Love your jams, particularly the way they evolve and get more complex over the performance. Inspiring! When you say you recalibrated your Instruo Saich, are you referring to the "Case Tuning" procedure described at p6 of the user manual? Or do you mean something more fundamental. I'm interested because I've done the Case Tuning on mine many times, but I can never get the 4 internal oscillators to stay in tune with themselves, let alone an external sound source, for long. Maybe I also need to contact Instruo if there's more than the documented tuning process that can be done?
So if you pull the big knob off the front, there are 4 pots labelled I, II, III, and IIII. They control the pitch scaling for each VCO. Choose the VCA mode that allows you to listen to each oscillator individually.
Start with oscillator 1 playing middle C at zero volts. Move two octaves up. If it’s flat, turn to the left. If it’s sharp, turn to the right. Jump back to zero volts, retune to middle C, jump back two octaves, rinse repeat, until it’s close. Then fine tune for 3 or 4 octaves tracking.
Repeat that for each oscillator, then you know they’ll all track 1v/oct properly.
Now go and do the case tuning, and all will be amazing. My saich was pretty terrible prior to going through all of that! Awesome since :)

1V/oct adjustment:
Calibration of 1V/Octave tracking between oscillators is not a hard procedure, but can take some patience and practice.
The most practical approach is to match tracking between two oscillators (one being a reference that is trusted to track accurately). This can even be done without requiring expensive test equipment.
It’s always a good idea to match tracking within a system, especially if sound sources vary in style and/or come from entirely different manufacturers.
Different circuits have different sweet spots and curves in response/behaviour. Over time you can become familiar with particular instruments’ quirks and begin using particular tools in contexts they might particularly suit.
Analogue circuits, like acoustic instruments, can change and settle over time. Temperature stability can play a big role in consistency.
When I set up a system for a performance or studio use, I tend to match the tracking of the modules together once I have the module selection completed.
I’ll describe these steps in the context calibrating one oscillator to another.
(One oscillator being a reference that tracks in the way that is desired)
You will need a means of listening to both oscillators simultaneously. Some sort of mixer at the output.
A manual CV control that will give a decent range of CV. 0-5V range is a good safe bet.
If this voltage source can be quantised to octave/single volt jumps this makes the process much easier.
Find the 1V/octave trimmer resistor(s).
The Cš-L has two. One for each oscillator. These are both 100R trimmers (101 on the labelling).
There is labelling on the rear PCB that say 1V/oct [A] and [B]. [A] being the top and [B] the bottom.
The Tš-L v2 has one on the back of the module it's the highest one marked with "101"
The saïch, each core is marked "I - IIII" and is on the front of the module, hidden underneath the Frequency knob. *Please avoid messing with the other trimmers
It is important that you have your system turned on for at least 15 minutes to let the analogue circuitry warm up before performing any calibration procedure.
Here are the steps:
• Patch the variable CV to both oscillators’ 1V/octave inputs (passive mult/stackable usually works for this)
• Monitor both oscillators
◦ Pick a rich waveform. Sawtooths are best, but square can work fine too.
• Tune both voices to a comfortable listening frequency. Something like 110Hz is a good starting point.
◦ Tune these to a unison so there is no beating.
• Jump up 2 or 3 octaves from your variable CV source.
• The unison will have drifted.
• Adjust the target oscillator’s calibration trimmer so you hear the frequencies grow closer but DO NOT tune them all the way to the unison. Nudge it a bit. The frequency spacing relationship is not linear, aim for somewhere in the middle of the out of tune interval and the unison. Err on the side of caution and make a small adjustment.
• Return the CV to the original octave (110Hz or there about). This unison will now be out of tune. Retune the target to the reference oscillator returning to no beat frequencies.
• Repeat the process!
*For saïch, using the arpeggio mix profile you should be able to isolate each osc at a time.
Take your time to do each voice, one at a time, as if they were 4 independent modules.
Every time you jump up the distance between the pitches should get closer together.
Over adjustment is easily done. Take your time and find a balance point that you’re happy with.
Return to the original unison frequency often and keep making sure they sit in tune between jumps.

How do you even get started with a setup like this?
In my case, I just picked up a DIY kit from dreadbox, and was hooked after than! This set up has slowly evolved into its current form over the 7 years or so.
If you want to get an understanding for how it works, best place to start is VCV rack (which is a free download). Omri Cohen has some fantastic tutorials on VCV.
