Tommy was serious about making the product happen but he found himself way in over his head and rather than just throw in the towel & move on, he kept making blunder after blunder. It sucks because I grew up watching Tommy Tallerico on the original G4TV co-hosting both Judgement Day & Electric Playground with Victor Lucas and even though I don't care about Intellivision, I was rooting for Tommy to succeed but instead he fell down the proverbial rabbit hole & has shown no sign of getting out.
@@DragonHeart613 PR blunders aside he really exaggerated the progress of the console. Last November he put out an official announcement saying the Amico has left pre-production and entered "formal production". These may be weasel words because I don't know if it actually means something in the industry, but when the average buyer with a interest in Amico reads that, they are more than likely to assume: great, they have some factory out there spitting out complete Amico consoles and all they have to do next is ship them to stores and warehouses. 10 months later, where did this "formal production" take them? That announcement was easily one of the dumbest moments for the company.
Fascinating video. As a board game reviewer, the part about small time reviewers being taken advantage of was really interesting. I love in-depth videos like this. Keep it up, man.
Interesting you mention board games. Amico is/was not intended to compete with the Big Three. They were actually much more interested in the board game market - couch co-op, family, bringing people together, etc. Critics of the system are mostly hardcore gamers. They don't understand Amico's market, and don't understand that board gamers are a different animal entirely.
Currently watching Lunch with RGT.... Man, I'm 46 and grew up with IntelIivision. I still have the games and console in garage. I would have been a buyer but I realize I am one of the few that simply wanted to re-live older games. The reality is, the market simply doesn't exist for this one. So yeah. It's over.
Seriously, I’m 44 and grow up with the Intellivision and Atari and I just found out the perfect solution to re-live that era… The Steam Deck! I currently have all Intellivision, Atari, Commodore, Collecovision, etc. games installed on it. They all run perfectly and since it’s a portable device, I can play them when and where I want. Using a hdmi cable and controllers, I can also output all those games to the tv. Seriously, if you’re a retro gamer, I’ll recommend having a look at it.
When it was first announced it was shortly after the Chameleon so I was cautiously optimistic. However, quickly I found holes in the idea; especially when the company started going on about competing with Sony or Nintendo by going after this HUGE casual gamer market and being only family-friendly. Bruh, that's not why anyone wanted it in the first place. People wanted a retro console, people who are older than dirt like me. We didn't want casual, we wanted true, classic, retro gaming. That's when the cracks for me started to appear and now I have fully written off the system. Now I just sit back and watch Intelliboomers drink the Kool-Aid.
I think it didn't become a scam until 2020 when they were exaggerating the state of progress in the console, and started taking pre-orders, while knowing that they're actually not all that ready to meet the launch date (they wouldn't officially announce a delay till 2 months before the planned launch). As time went on, statements on progress just became more exaggerated. Amico is what you get if Coleco Chameleon had millions more dollars to play around with.
The hilarious thing about this saga is that it basically peeled back 30 years of Tommy's history and showed that he's been a poseur and incompetent since the very start. From posing with a wax figurine of the Dalai Lama, to the absurd claim of having been the first "American" to work on a Sonic game, to his fantastically toxic posse & attitude, it's all been laid on the table.
Nah, screw those guys. Considering Ian enjoys bashing on criticism from loyal consumers and fans like the ones from Diablo Immortal and the Sonic live action, and Pat not knowing what context he’s looking into except react and follow the flow, they deserve what’s coming to them. Should’ve just stayed focus with their topic on NES and retro games, and not the modern generation if they continue to slack off and not do research.
Yeah but they brought a good share of that on themselves. And Tommy invited them to check it out like he did a lot of these smaller channels and they refused. And I know for a fact from personal experience that Pat will make stuff up to serve his own purposes.
Pat and Ian immediately put Amico in the same room as the Chameleon - from the start - and I don't blame Tommy for taking that as an insult. Those guys are only gloating because they think they were right all along, and also said that it wouldn't sell, etc, which is unproven since it has yet to make retail to be proven/disproven. Pat and Ian deserve no credit IMO. And, in their last Amico video they seemed awfuly nervous and desperate. It may just release...

Thank you for this video and your analysis. For us at FFG we did pre-order one from Gamestop (purple I think) years ago. The thought was its Gamestop so it has to be legit. Last summer we figured it is not coming out ever and we lost that money. Expecting to hear about a class action lawsuit at some point soon. We were critical of the Amico in FFG Reacts videos and live streams. Especially short updates from Tommy that made no sense. The company had reached out to us to do stuff for them, and our response was we need the product in hand. The thing that always confused us is there are videos showing the working systems. That was a big warning flag for us. If you are showing working systems why aren't they coming out? Ship a few here or there. The whole treating gaming press and content creators like slave labor is something that happens with a lot of video game companies. We have written extensively about that horrible attitude from too many in PR and Marketing. They want us to make them all this money, and our reward is more work that makes them even more money. We call them millionaire moochers. The Evercade has been great. Got or purchased every single system and cartridge. Definitely worth the money. I hope you do a video about the Evercade at some point.
26:20 Can we even give Tallarico credit for Terminator? Did you see Joey Kuras saying that those are actually his songs? The same guy that made the oof sound that Tommy still takes credit for.
One of the songs from Terminator was made by his high school band (Destination Unknown is the song). Tommy took their song and put it on Terminator and only gave himself the credit.
Little did you know when making this long-form video that a 2-hour video about "OOF" would be made about Tommy, followed by a 4-hour video about this saga. But this video gives a good overview about the Amico story, and something that the longer videos don't even go into, which is why even if this came out, it would have been set to fail. Tommy didn't know whether to go the Wii/mobile/casual route or the retro route, and the Amico would have failed at both, as there was never a killer app (and Earthworm Jim 4 was simply a fake mock-up). And almost none of the hinted-at and even promised games even got started. It's 5 months since your video debuted, and I guess that the "problem" at 23:20 still hasn't been fixed...
I got to play the Amiico when Tommy came to Boston and it was honestly fun. Also can’t believe no mentions that Tommy’s cousin is Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, always a fun fact! (Tyler changed his name from Tallerico but they are cousins!)
I’m glad you are putting together a more comprehensive video of the bits of conversation that pat and Ian have been having for quite some time. Thank you for being the only other channel I’ve seen cover it ever.
This may seem odd to point out, but so many of these clips of Tommy show him having some serious raccoon eyes. I can only think of 3 reasons for that: 1) He keeps getting into fights and his opponent keeps aiming for the eyes 2) He's stressed way out and over-tired 3) Drugs. Lots of drugs
When I was serving in the Navy, an Admiral would sometimes come and speak at events. Do you know how questions to the Admiral were handled? The askers of questions were pre-selected long before the event, were given note cards with questions on them pre-written by upper chain-of-command, and were to ask them as if they were their own. This is how much of the world operates, even in _seemingly_ legitimate organizations, such as "government" ones.
They never developed the game. They just showed a visual pitch/animation test. If anyone REALLY wanted to make a new EWJ game, they could have easily done it on existing platforms.
They never even had the rights to make it. All Tommy had was a barbecue with the original team. Where many discovered Doug Tenapels views for the first time and claim they made it clear they wouldn't work with him after some of the things he said. And Tommy presented a barbecue that didn't go entirely well, as "we have the game" In top of that, according to people involved, they said the Amico was so underpowered that the only game Perry thought they could make was a mini game collection.
I have a lot of respect for Tommy’s contributions to the industry, and this whole situation saddens me. I preordered an Amico because I believed in him, but canceled after the second delay. For the record though I was given a refund on my deposit without question or hassle.
that's good you got your refund. people are having a hard time getting their money back now though. Intellivision themselves have basically admitted they no longer have the money to issue refunds.
You're lucky you got yours there are still people that still haven't received anything let alone their refund. Meanwhile, Tommy is still doing his video games live thing like nothing ever happened

Not my boy Tommy :-( I didn't know about this story. I know Tommy still from his time in the 90s, soundtracks and such. Man, I still love his work he did back then.
I was really interested in the system honestly. I saw the tech demos and videos regarding game development and "reimagined" Intellivision and other retro titles. I pre-order a system with high hopes. But ended up canceling the pre-order due to all the delays and drama.
What is everyone going to do with their “physical games” they bought? Those RFID cards are worthless even though people spend money on them. I think Tommy has some serious apologies to make!
I originally had the same interest as RGT in that it was supposed to bring back old IPs from classic games I liked. Being able to play the originals on a modern TV plus having remakes sounded good. Plus EJ4! So I paid my $100 for the pre-order of the founder's edition in woodgrain. But after everything, earlier this year I requested my $100 back and thankfully I got it. The evercade is awesome and I look forward to the new unit coming later this year. I have the two Intellivision carts for it and this is what Intellivision should have done since the beginning, focus on software licensing and new software for current systems as well as things like the evercade. What was both funny and sad is there were a few people who took a few days to a week doing a remake of an Intellivision game that was supposed to be on the Amico and developed it in Unity (which is how Amico games were being developed as well) and the games ended up looking and playing better than what Intellivision was supposedly working on for years.
Wait...we can get our money back??? How does one go about requesting the refund? I also put down $100 back in January 2020 for the Founder's Edition Amico. I was excited about this at one time. Now I have no interest in it, and decided a while back that I probably wouldn't be receiving it.
I don’t think the Amico was a scam I just don’t think it ever had any clear direction or aim & I think it’s been mismanaged by people who honestly don’t know what they’re doing? @RGT 85
The games weren't exclusive to Amico because of licensing issues. Tommy claimed, endlessly, that the games could ONLY be played on the Amico because they were made for the over-engineered pieces of trash he wanted as controllers.
Great video. But as someone who has been following this situation for a long time.. man oh man you missed alot. And yes, keep the long form content coming.
Former Amico "cult" member here. I have since been refunded after a lot of screeching, behind the scene. I noticed that I appeared at the 12:02 mark in this video. None of my Amico videos are still on my channel. Even though I no longer feature the Amico on my channel, Tommy absolutely helped it. He gave me exposure when I sorely needed it. For that I am incredibly grateful, even if I no longer advocate for the console. If I still remain on the Amico channel, then that is fine. I was a supporter. I still have the original Intellivision and was excited to play this one (one day). At this point, I would buy the games if they come to the Switch, but I would almost certainly not buy a console, even if it came to retail.
Almost.... thou has't nearly affected the diction in its' correctness. Thou should hath spake:- "Praise be to thee RGT85, thou great Nintendo game prophet. Thine words hath verily revealed the falsehoods of these swindlers." Just kidding though; it takes a lot to write in the old tongue! ; -)
Methinks you should pony up the cavalry, because in this age of chivalry and malice, thou shalt not stand for the bribery and treason of such wretched peons. Storm the Amico gates and strike down the avenged. Smite thee upon us with battened down hatchets and severed scythes. Here ye, here he! I have no idea what I was getting at here! 🙃
"People today don't care about earthworm jim" im a gen z (teen) and i love earthworm jim, of course i have always been into retro games but i even have the earthworm jim show on dvd and watch it regularly! (The show is hilarious and awesome)
Thanks for the video. I've only heard once of the system, when David Perry mentioned it shortly. I personally have decided for me that i will not back any projects in crowd funding sites any longer, neither will i ever buy or pre-order any Early Access game that isn't an already functional multiplayer game where friends invite me to play it with them. Not because i don't believe in people's ability to make great products, but because the rate of failure through crowd funding is way too high to justify pumping trust and money into it. And you don't even have to be looking at gaming specifically, when ever you give someone the money for a product or service upfront, you as the consumer are very lucky when what comes out of the deal will actually meet the requirements both of you set with the money transfer. In Game Making, when a dev or a studio gets their entire funding upfront, they usually can't handle the freedom they are given if they don't have a strict and brutal budget oversight, ready to battle anyone who wants their part of the project to become bigger than it initially was thought of. That's simply it - they loose all grip on the core idea and functionality and run into mazes of features and grand ideas. There doesn't have to be any ill will on anyone's part, naivity and blind trust is enough. That's why i can't possibly support any crowd funding or even Early Access pre-purchase in Game Development any longer. The DirectX team, who invented the XBox, as the best example, didn't get anything for their prototype, they had to resolve to literal "borrowing" of hardware, hacking and basically gluing scraps together to revolutionize the console market with a console that's able to use state of the art PC hardware components. Only when their prototype was functional with everything they needed for a gaming console to work, they got the budget. So to me that means massive funding upfront, and only then the concept and functional prototype afterwards, will never lead to a satisfactory outcome, especially in super creative fields. And even then, when the setup is perfect, there can still always be egos or external interests that completely scew the original vision, so even when you have a project set up where the prototype was functional before the real budget came, you still have a relatively high possibility of failure.
What really surprised me was that there was a group of people that were hotly anticipating the release of the Amico. It looks, lame for lack of a better term. I never understood some people's fascination with it. Edit: You explained it pretty well lol, most "fans" were either an investor or they were in love with Tommy. Got it.
I was an Intellivision kid so when I heard someone was making a new one I was super excited. Then, I saw the controller. The one thing I hated about the original Intellivision. I get that they did it as some kind of nostalgia-sparking thing that sounded cool at the time. But, as we found out with the Wii U, such a thing is way more effort than it's worth. Without the stupid controller design, this thing probably would have released 2 years ago. I'm sure it would've sucked but maybe they actually would have at least broke even. All it is now is a huge stain on the Intellivision name.
Yes, I'm also an Intellivision kid. The crazy controller makes the games unplayable on any other emulated system other than a lot of basic games like Astrosmash that don't depend on the numerical pad. The disc control was always weird. I always used a joystick mod that replaced the disc.
I wish they would actually just release a classics collection on all the systems of old Intellivision system games. Tron:Deadly Discs immediately comes to mind. But to make a new "system" and play off that nostalgia? No.

It was always a scám.. 🚨👮🚨👮
I think you are correct.
@@therealavolpe it's Not a scam, You're a gaming Racist 😂
So yeah. It's over.
But Turbo Joe says "Amico is for F**king families"..!!
Never did i think that a console could fail worse than the Ouya
I enjoyed my OUYA as a cheap emulation console for my bedroom at the time.
Pat and Ian were right all along.
These amico guys are awfully quiet now lol.
Remember that time we thought Intellivision Amico was going to be in fruition instead of the Atari VCS? Pepperidge Farm remembers!
Yeah at the very least the VCS is a good home brew machine that offers *something*, it exists and that’s step #1 lol
Funny that Pat and Ian (CU Podcast) called the project a scam, yet no one believed them...
How Tommy treated Pat and Ian is despicable.
Truth!!
@@PuzZLeR_00 speaking of nervous and desperate...
The Intelivision cult was terribly toxic for a console suposedly "Kids and family friendly". Harassment Of women, queer people, Black people ... I originally thought It could be a good Idea but ... At certain point this stuff becomes more scary than inviting
And don't forget their CTO's opinions on job enviroments, the transitioning, the position of women in the "nuclear" family, and more terribly dated opinions at best.

I'm 49 years old and the Intellivision was my first console. Some of those updated games you clipped definitely tickled my nostalgia bone. My brother and I used to play the biplanes from Triple Action for hours. The flight physics of that game was crazy advanced for its day. I hope some of these games eventually hit the Switch store.

Lol! I was thinking the same thing. I'm not from the Midwest or anywhere where you'd even hear of cornhole, the sport. But I've heard of cornhole, the nether-region orifice.
@@tron.44 I'm from the Northeast and cornholing exist and a small number of people are passionate about it (honestly I think the public events are just an excuse to get drunk.) Thank you for this video and your analysis.

I really like these long form videos. Would definitely like to see more. Awesome job man!
You absolutely nailed it this is the best explanation of the whole Amico debacle.
Lol true

Thank you for being the only other channel I’ve seen cover it ever.
This may seem odd to point out, but so many of these clips of Tommy show him having some serious raccoon eyes. I can only think of 3 reasons for that:
1) He keeps getting into fights and his opponent keeps aiming for the eyes
2) He's stressed way out and over-tired
3) Drugs.
Looks like most of those moneys went to his wrist watch. Looks like he has an a few Richard Milles
Tommy sounds like Bee-Otchhh
The Amico created the death of Earthworm Jim by making the game exclusive.
Yeah. Dammit tommy
They never developed the game. They just showed a visual pitch/animation test. If anyone REALLY wanted to make a new EWJ game, they could have easily done it on existing platforms.
I wish we could get Earthworm Jim into better hands, there should of been an Earthworm Jim collection by now
@@CaptAwesumNo1Zone Yeah, it would be nice to keep Earthworm Jim away from Doug TenNepal.
They never even had the rights to make it. All Tommy had was a barbecue with the original team. Where many discovered Doug Tenapels views for the first time and claim they made it clear they wouldn't work with him after some of the things he said. And Tommy presented a barbecue that didn't go entirely well, as "we have the game"
In top of that, according to people involved, they said the Amico was so underpowered that the only game Perry thought they could make was a mini game collection.

They'll be the AOL CDs of the new age, great coasters and pucks to toss around!
@RGT 85
I pre ordered thinking it was going to be a good time and I will never see that money
This is an even bigger scam than the Coleco Chameleon

I always thought RGT 85 stands for Real Gamers Tube 85 and I rolled with it for years not knowing what it really stands for until now.
Expect a independent small documentary on the failure and scam of the Amico
This always felt like a pyramid scheme to me.
I wish they would actually just release a classics collection on all the systems of old Intellivision system games. Tron:Deadly Discs immediately comes to mind. But to make a new "system" and play off that nostalgia? No.
