...you do know Kamala was on the ticket already, right? I mean if something happened to Biden tomorrow, Kamala would get sworn in by the end of the day, and if Biden/Harris won the election and something happened to Biden on January 15th, Harris would be sworn in by the end of the day. Anyone voting for Biden in 2020 or the 2024 primary _had_ to be looking at his age and giving Harris a good hard once-over.
The other meaningful option at this point is to have the delegates decide who the nominee will be at the convention, and that seems even less democratic. We didn't vote for these people to go to the convention and make a choice for us, is that somehow more democratic than the person we already voted for to be the second in line for the presidency stepping up to the candidacy?

I get the desire for an open convention, or mini primary or something like that. I just don't think it's practical at this point. I also remember what a s*** show the 2020 primary was, with all the hopefuls sniping at each other and saying "pick me" before we collectively shrugged and settled on Joe Biden. I think an open process at this point would look a lot like that, and it wouldn't end well.

I think the discussion is worth having regardless, if nothing else it would help narrow down the options for who Harris' running mate should be. I think it would calm a lot of nerves if she defied expectations and tapped a three-star general for the job.
