Got one of these engines in a sunseeker portofino 21 XPS - only got the boat late last year took it out on the water 3 times. I had zero idea about engines or anything mechanical before i got the boat (im in I.T). Ill be following along on this, probably be asking for some tips :). I have just changed the alternator belt and the oilpump belt (has hydro steering) and the impeller, my next step is to replace the oil and oil filter and fuel filter. A question, the fuel filter is external to the engine, does that make any difference? Is it worth replacing the spark plugs? If so with what? is there anything i can do to add extra power to the engine? I just purchased this "Tune Up Kit for Volvo Penta, Mercruiser, OMC, V8 Distributor Cap, 3853815" so intend to fit that soon, zero idea how yet :D. I have a 280 outdrive also, dont have the trim tab though so need to find one of those- also dont have the vents on the back that you have #3:49 , do you know where to get those? I winterised it by draining all water out and running anti freeze through it, have watched you other videos and didnt do anything else, obviously changing all the filters and oil now so i should be good! sorry loads of questions :D
Hi TeSavage. Welcome to the world of boating. Not an easy job indeed if you have no mechanical background. However you can find a lot of information on the web. Get also a Seloc or Clymer workshop manual. It will help a lot. As to your questions:it doesn't matter where the fuel filter is as long as you replace it. The spark plugs should be replaced once per season, at the beginning. If you have never done it replace also distributor cap and rotor. If you still have condenser and points, swap to electronic ignition (Pertronix). On web sites like marinepartsexpress.com you will find schematics for all types of engines and outdrives. Very useful to pinpoint the right spare part number. On web sites like marineengine.com you will find a very useful boat repair forum. Good luck! Best wishes.
@@stefanovaleretto3121 First of all, thanks for the response. Could you recommend spark plugs? I have a "gap tester" - do i need to test the gap of each before i replace? I have the tune up kit so will replace the cap and rotor. How do i know if i have "condenser and points?"
Spark plugs are Champion RV15YC4. Spark plug gap 0.9 mm. You see if you have consenser and points. You see the condenser and you see the points inside the distributor cap, where there is the rotor.
@@stefanovaleretto3121 Thanks mate appreciated will take a look next weekend, Also - what oil do you use for the engine & leg? both 20w50 ? I have seen 20w40 recommended also?
I use 20w50. Better than 20w40 because it keeps a good viscosity also at high temperatures. With 20w40 oil pressure is a bit too close to the red area when the motor is idling and is quite warm. With 20w50 the issue is completely solved.
Where to put the Witherspoon in?
