    That's a great list of "right" valued sherried whiskies Geoff. I would add Glenallachie 12, nice sherry in that one and it is/was reasonably priced. Another one would be Bunna 12. I totally agree with your mystery pour Arran 10 as I have gone through a couple of bottles myself throughout 2022/2023. I think I still have one unopened. All good stuff.

      Glenallachie 12 is a fun one. More in the "bomb" direction for me, but definitely a good whisky at a good price. Cheers! 🥃

      Maybe the Bunna. I love the Glanallachie 12 but it doesn't strike me as "elegant".

    • @Rohit_M
      @Rohit_M 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@brukuns I partially agree with you because it starts out good but then it gets somewhat predictable. It's a heavily sherried and reasonably priced 12 yo whisky though.

    As many people do, I always wonder what Benromach 15 at 46% and non-chill filtered would taste like, but agree that even as is it’s a phenomenal whisky. Gotta also respect something that holds up to close scrutiny and attention at the same time that it can fade into the background and be something to just go along with a good night with friends

    TB/BSW from the Thompson Brothers is a good one for this list. Cheers

      Agree, it's a good one. For me more of a "dirty/old school" style of sherry, but very good stuff for the price! 🥃

    I'd recommend the Turntable Bittersweet Symphony blend. It really has that richness that you get with stuff like the Dalmore.

    Great List 😀
    My pick would be Glen Garioch 12. I just discovered it and I'm absolutely in Love with it. Here in Germany it costs around 40€, but in my opinion it easily tastes as good as bottles being sold around 60-70€ here. complex and suttle with just the right amount of sherry to it.

    • @HandsomeFerret
      @HandsomeFerret 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      If you travel at all - keep an eye out for the Glen Garioch 15 Sherry Cask. One of the best travel retail bottles out there and especially if you like the Glen Garioch style. cheers

    Those all sound like good suggestions (even the Dalmore! 😮) but I would add the current Royal Brackla 12yo to this list as well. The newer RB 12 is vastly improved over the previous 40% ABV version. It's now bottled at 46% and states on the label that it's both non-chill filtered and has no color added. However, anyone who buys a bottle may want to open it and leave it uncorked for 24 hours before pouring. My bottle was a bit harsh when first opened, but it settled down quite nicely after a good exposure to air. It's almost a sherry bomb with the depth of flavor it provides, but it has more going on too; there are also subtle notes of tobacco and leather that rounds it out very nicely. The addition of a bit of water helps it open up even more. Really, this might be the most improved whisky I've tasted in a number of years, and at the $50 I payed qualifies as a very good buy.

    • @xiamengbaby
      @xiamengbaby 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The old RB12 was $50 in the Chicago area. When the new version hit shelves, it was repriced to $70.

    I'm seeing some negative comments about Dalmore. Although I like the 12 year Sherry Cask Select, the Dalmore Portwood, is rich, elegant, pretty complex and gets better with each sip. It's a step up from the very good Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, and far less expensive (at under $100) than others out there.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm a fan of the Port, too, but I happen to prefer the Sherry Cask Select. Both very good, though. Cheers! 🥃

    Really good content. Keep up the good work. I suppose I wouldn't know where to go with this "elegant" description from my own collection. The Ancnoc 18 is no longer budget friendly here. My wheelhouse is a dirty little Craigellachie .
    I do like the Aberlour Casg Annamh as a perfect sherry expression.
    Benromach 15 is $12 more that A10.
    That realization may be the last straw that draws me back to a 43%.

    • @Gwhisky

    Dalwhinnie raised my eyebrow as I have driven past that distillery so many times yet never thought they may have something that would interest me, curious now as I do love to have a sherried whisky in my collection. However, I find the best bang for the buck in blends such as the Old Perth Sherry cask I absolutely loved that I finally finished recently. Food, no, whisky for thought 😊

    Regarding searching ideas for more creative content. I hope you would consider someday to make more reviews of malternatives. Honestly, TH-cam is so poor for reviews on other quality spirits. And even though you're not a professional in those other categories. We're all looking at these categories from the pov of single malt drinker :)
    Unfortunately, malternatives do not normally go further than, rum, bourbon or rye 😢 that would be so amazing to have some opinions on tequila, calvados, cognac, mezcal, white sipping rums and many more.

    I haven't tried any of those 5. I've had the Arran 10 which was good but didn't get much sherry influence in it. In my market Benromach 15 is expensive, about $150-155 NZD. Compared to Speyburn 15 which I got for $105, the Benromach just isn't good value. Tamdhu 12 is a better price at about $95. My list would have included Bunnahabhain 12 and Kilchoman Sanaig. Cheers!

      Agree with the Bunna 12 & Sanaig, and others have mentioned Glen Garioch 12.
      I guess it complexes the issue somewhat when the theme is "elegantly sherried", because Benromach 15, Sanaig, Glen Garioch 12, & Uigeadail aren't exactly elegant whiskies, notwithstanding not being sherried to death.
      Arran 10 also seems "lightly sherried", to me.

    • @SimonneNZ
      @SimonneNZ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm in Auckland, out on the North Shore. Haven't tried any Glen Garioch yet. I think the definition of an elegantly sherried whisky can mean different things to different people. For me it isn't a sherry bomb, but it isn't something too light either. ABV may also have an impact as alcohol will carry the flavours. A whisky with a high sherry cask content but with a lower ABV may come across as more elegant than one at Cask Strength but with less sherry cask content.@@jbar6284

    The diageo distillers editions are no longer desirable at all as they have removed the age statements or date stamps so they used to be based on the Dalwhinnie 15 or the Lag 16 or the Talisker 10 for example but with an alleged extra finishing added but now we don't know how old they are anymore.

    Good list of 5 (or 6?) whiskies, Geoff. Why did you title it as 7?🤔 I think Speyburn 15 might fit your criteria, and to me would be the only one to vie with Benromach 15, quality or enjoyment-wise. B15 *used* to be one of the best-priced 15s in my market ~2 years ago, but is now sadly middle of the pack.😞

      @@GwhiskyWhat I particularly like about the Speyburn 15 is that it's quite/very sherry-expressive but *not* a sherry bomb. It's more refined (elegant?) than that. I don't know the proportions but it's sherry *and* bourbon/b&s. Also, the whisky has sat (matured) in the sherry casks for the full 15 years before vatting with the ex-bourbon casks, rather than simply a finish. Most of the flavours from such will closely resemble a sherry finished-whisky, but not all, there are some subtle differences/nuances... well, at least non-blind one tells oneself there are. I've only recently tried Speyburn 15 but am thoroughly enjoying it.

    Great pics for Scotch the punches above its weight. Picked up Benromach15 for $55 Dubai duty free. Tamdhu 15 delicious but usually over $100.

      @@Gwhisky I'm in Ontario Canada, here Dalmore makes up part of the overpriced scotch trifecta with Macallan and Balvenie.

    To me, "elegance" in whisky involves the distinct flavors of smoldering bacon... but that's just me. I guess sherry is nice too.

    Nice list…
    I would have had the Bunnahabhain 12 on the list… Arran 10 as a mystery pour is a stretch in my opinion… I definitely like the Ancnoc 18… there are many whiskies that you can enjoy that don’t have the word or over pricing of Macallan.

      Bunnahabhain 12 is a beauty. For me it's always been more in a slightly rugged earthy direction (which is a very good thing).

    Surprised you mentioned the Arran 10 in a sherried whiskies list. It's predominately bourbon casks with a very minor sherry influence, so much so that I wouldn't (personally) group it with the traditional sherried whisky profile that your list is predominately made up of.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I've had Arran 10s that were almost fully sherry-dominated. Granted, not all the modern batches are but I certainly detect it. Huge contrast from the older 10s that were much more distillate-driven. Cheers Wade! 🥃

    Arran 10 richly sherried? hmmm... might need to pick another bottle to see if it changed. I remember there being only a slight hint of sherry.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The old ones were very distillate-driven and somewhat spirity. The newer ones have a lot more cask influence, both bourbon and sherry. 🥃

      Ardbegs Corryvreckan is a hooligan in the best way and should you get a bottle which tastes a bit more sherried it shall lead this pack.

    Dalmore is an odd case. IBs have proven to me that their distillate is as good as anyone's, it's just the presentation that lets them down. I have no trouble believing a properly-presented OB is good stuff. I won't be buying one in light of the price, but I won't be unsubscribing either.
