- A WESTMEATH CONVICT'S STORY
An extrodionary true story of a 19th westmeath prisioner .
In the early 19th century Ireland was still under the rule by the British empire. The judicial system in Ireland was extremely harsh with Petty crimes punishable by hanging. It soon became unrealastic to hang everyone.
Prisons had become overcrowded by prisoners awaiting a death sentence. Laws were soon changed to allow prisoners convicted of pettty crimes to be transported to the Penal Colonies within the British empire, countries such as Australia.
Our video is of a young Teenage boy who stole a Sack of Grain in Kilbeggan to feed his hungry family.Arested he found himself shackled in Chains and awaiting a sentence in Mullingar Courthouse. Follow his story. Listen to historian Ruth ILLingworth as she tells this extraordinary true story.
