    I've been watching your channel for the past few weeks without being a subscriber. This episode made me a subscriber! I'm 65 years old and still doing crazy riding like this. I applaud you for being very candid and humble to expose your weaknesses and fear. We've all "been there and done that" at some point in our riding career. I totally understand how it feels riding in a terrain like that with a totally unsuitable tire and a non responsive TPI to make matters worse. This was one of the most enjoyable videos that I watched so far. Five stars and a👍for you.

    Having moved to Southern Utah a year ago, I'm constantly feeling this way. These boys down here are insane! On the plus side, my riding has improved immensely. With that being said, they always seem to find something even more technical and terrifying every ride. I think they might be trying to kill me.

    • @OldManEnduro
      @OldManEnduro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinellison4117 nobody from Rocky Mountain, but a lot of locals I've met from a private FB page called Southern Utah Single Track (SUST). I'm blown away at how many trails they have down here. Problem is, you can't find them on your own, as there are zero trail maps for the area. You have to meet locals to find them or scour Google Earth VERY closely. Even then, they're near impossible to see.

    Back in the late 60's and 70's I raced the desert, dist 37 and 38, Barstow to Vegas, Check Chase Barstow to Parker and for those bikes we had there would be no way I could have ridden in that type of terrain. I guess the greenies have shut down most of the desert we use to ride in and this is what is left. I'll be 74 this month and I want to get a dirt bike and ride a little but if this is what it is all about now I don't think I could do it like you do. I enjoy watching your trials and tribulations and the beating your body and bike take though. Some of those ridges I have to turn my head when you look down. You are doing fine and I can see the improvement in your riding in just the short time I've been a subscriber. Keep up the hard work and keep making these videos. I showed my wife some of the stuff you guys are riding and she went to the desert with me most every weekend and her comment is "it never looked like that when we were out there riding". She just shook her head.

    I've ridden that area, not the crazy exposure stuff on the ridge, but around 16 minute mark I recognize some stuff, especially that really steep downhill. Had 3 buddies that went out there one day exploring and making their own trails. Got down in a draw that they couldn't get back out of, and they were all expert desert racers. Finally they gave up and started hiking/climbing down the mountain and it's getting dark, one guy got separated on the hike and they couldn't find him, the whole thing was a shit show. Pre cell phone era. Took them 4 days to get the bikes out with ropes and pulleys and a bunch of sweat. There are also legends of bikes up there that never were retrieved, one of them a brand new Maico

This was around 1990, and by their description, no one was going in there and stealing anything unless they brought their own mountain climbing gear. They had day jobs, like most of us do (or did :) ) and they got stuck on Sunday afternoon. They all lived and worked in the Antelope Valley, luckily. Then they got off work and drove out to Mojave to rescue the bikes. Oh yeah, it was winter time so the days were real short and it was cold and working in the dark

That area is definitely black / double black in difficultly. People who have never road stuff like that cannot appreciate how tall and steep some of those hills truly are. That 505 was the right tire at the 9ish minute mark. The crazy thing is there are other 60-70 year old guys who can ride those trails and a handful of them have been riding that area since the 1970’s. I prefer to stay more on the B******** Ridge stuff. Thanks for the post. I need to go back, but I’ll avoid some of that hike-a-bike stuff south of ********* ******. Question, do you think a Nitro Mousse would be better than Tubliss at say 7-8 psi? Wow epic riding! Few comments: On rock ledges, wind your bike up more at the bottom and use momentum and stored RPMs to get you over. Alot of those, by the time you are half way up the obstacle you are completely off the power. On steep downhills get your center of gravity as far back on the back of the bike as you can. Your rear brake pedal has to be set up to allow you to break when leaned back - which is why I have my rear brake set to engage with only a slight touch. Avoid taking your feet off the pegs at all cost on a downhill section. On tight stuff, up on the pegs and if you have to, paddle with one leg but keep the other leg weighted on the peg to keep traction. On steep stuff, if you spin out, keep your ass on the seat and shift as far back as you can before you start wheeli'ng - avoid pushing at all cost. Consider getting a trials bike to better your skills - alot of that terrain is a cake walk on a trials bike. Trials is alot slower so you can learn correct throttle-clutch-brake timing and body position (jap zaps, splats). You will also learn balance skills to help you keep your feet on the pegs and standing. The Ryan Young trials training (google it) videos are excellent - and all of these skills are transferable to your 300. With trials skills, you will look for other lines that many enduro riders don't take because they appear more difficult when in fact they are easier. Those crank case eating V grooved rock faces are a typical example where a trials guy will hit the vertical face of rock directly beside it and never take his feet off the pegs. Its literally wind up and just smash it, pull in the clutch as you are going up and then a bit of slippage as required to help you over. You are doing all the work in the approach, not during the obstacle.

    I hate that feeling -- the self-doubt, the "fuck, where's that happy-go-lucky, I got this, bounce through everything instinct when I need it," the self-flagellation, the "you had that, why'd you back off?" I ride my 950SE with the little bikes through trails that're sometimes so scary I form permanent fear creases on my face while grinding through them. And there are also those days when you're so off your game you actually need a dirtnap just to break the bullshit spell, and then you're OK for the day. It's nice when that fall isn't off a cliff though.
