New HIDs for the S500 Mercedes

  • Dominic's Mercedes is getting new HID Xenon headlights. The old ones are far superior in function but not on the light output. Halogen to HID, no problem, Halogen to LED, not problem, but what a pain it was to find HID headlights for a car that has factory HID's. (As of this post there are no downgrades from HID to LEDs or Halogens available)
    Here is our longest video yet with all the ups and downs of the install. Oh no, it was not without any issues. Armed with this info I hope it will be easier for you to upgrade to a new set of aftermarket headlights.
    Here is the link to the company where I got the HID headlight for factory HID equipped cars: www.ebay.com/u...
    Here is the link to the headlight: www.ebay.com/i...

      See if you can score some HIDs, but it can get expensive if you don’t already run them. I didn’t hear much about LEDs. Make sure you research the options.

    Hi Turbo Snail! Nice video my friend. Is it possible for me to swap out a cloudy 2001 s600 xenon HID headlight assembly for a clear lens 2003 xenon HID assembly without too much headache or wiring difficulties?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It should be the same as the facelift was in America for the year 2004. I think in Europe it was 2003. As long as you swap HID for HID it should be identical. Good luck. Go to mbworld.org. Great forum, lots more info than I can provide.

    Hey Sir,love your vids but i will tell you I have an S430 about the same year as your car,I ordered new lights that claimed to be a direct fit,once I received them they were not needless to say it was a total loss the cost to send them back to TX from California it was a loss,never again as nothing I found seems to be a "direct fit" not sure how many variations were made in 01 S430 but there seems to be variations

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We must have gotten lucky. I’ve heard from some other people that they weren’t able to direct fit them. I know there are 2 variations. One for halogen where you can upgrade to LED very easy and one which is HID and hard to find without being able to downgrade to LED. Finding out HID replacement took a long time but once we had them it was fairly straight forward to swap them out.
      My recommendation, save those old ones. They are better than any aftermarket version.

      Thanks for watching. Honestly, if I had to do it again I may opt for saving the originals. Get new ballasts and new HIDs and polish the heck out of the headlights and a nice clear coat. The aftermarket ones loose the self leveling feature. I was able to sell the old ones however and recover all my investment in a new set. I hope that helps.

    Hey how’s it going, long time no speak! Great vid! Quick question, I own a 04 s500 it has HID headlights as well, if I purchase an aftermarket halogen headlight assembly set can I simply plug and play and avoid the whole HID setup entirely? unfortunately my driver side low beam HID d2s light is in-op. I replaced the igniter, ballast, the bulb and still have no success.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there. Unfortunately if you have stock HID you can only replace with HID. It was a pain for us to find a set that fit and honestly it wasn't as good as the OEM. The oem, last I've seen, sold for $1400 in excellent shape/rebuilt. Now if you had the Halogen, you could have converted to LED and there are tons available for cheap.
      two options
      1. Find a set like we did. I took a while to find it on eBay.
      2. Rebuild the OEM set.
      You have to transfer all the electronics too so dont throw anything away.
      Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but HID are superior even to modern LEDs, but they are expensive. If any way possible, try to preserve your original ones. I've heard of services that rebuild them.
      Best of luck!!!

    • @Turbo_Snail

      I bought mine on eBay. It took me a while to find them as they are not very common. That’s why I have no links. The eBay links are expire quickly. If you got factory HID it’ll be hard to find. You gotta stick with HID. In my honest opinion, if there is any chance to save the original ones, stick with them as all the after market versions are inferior to the OEM.

    My right low beam went out. Is there a fuse just for that single side? I have a feeling it's a bad ground is there a way to trouble shoot for ground? I replaced new lamps and ballast and still won't lite. All I can think of is bad ground or fuse. But I don't know where the fuse is.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure about the fuse. It should be 1 fuse for both lights. When it comes to electrical I’m the first one to run from it. I had a problem once where the started wouldn’t fire up (on the hid bulb). A new starter took care of that. Not sure if that’s the same issue you’re having. Check mbworld.org. Don’t remember the brand. Aftermarket there wasn’t much choice if you have HIDs. If you got halogen there are tons of lights available. To be honest, these lights are brighter then what the old ones were but noting compared to true stock HIDs. If you have halogen you can also convert to LED. If that’s the case you’re honestly better of.

    I have a 2002 S500 with the “blue” HID headlights with non clear lens. I want to upgrade them to the clear LED housing but most of the aftermarket ones on eBay are incompatible if you have HID (S430s are halogen and are an easy upgrade). So it looks like I’ll be sticking with my original headlights.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don’t want to downgrade from HID to LED anyways. You’ll be disappointed by the light output. HID replacements are hard to find. Trust me, it took me a month to find these.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I finally found some on eBay that are for HID. not sure why most are halogen. But you are right. You cannot take halogen to HID upgrade lights. You have to get native HID lights for it to work. We tried old/used lights from an old Mercedes but it had the same issues as our old ones. It seems that the projectors eventually burn out. No one in the US rebuilds them. I did however find services in Europe that do rebuilds. There are even videos on TH-cam on how to do that. Check them out. I wasn’t brave enough to do it myself.

    Hi! 2003 w220 S320 CDI is it good? Thanks

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not like the originals. But then again it’s a fraction of the cost. You loose auto level and even tho it’s HID/Xenon, the brightness doesn’t seem as bright. Also, it took me a while to get them leveled. In order to level the left one, I had to pull it out, make a small adjustment and put it back in.
      Would I buy them again? Yes, because a new set of originals cost more than the car is worth. If your car is mint and a future collectible, I would drop the money on some real ones. No one in my area was able to rebuild the original ones, so I had no other choice.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotta disagree on that. HID is still the best. Won’t match the output of LED. I’ve tried twice and was disappointed. LED is however better than halogen. HIDs also run hot so after 10 years the output suffers due to burned out reflectors so LED should last longer. So there’s good and bad.

      Mine was already HID so the options were slim. I paid around $360 for mine. Just swapped over the electronics. The only problem the aftermarket set did not have automatic height adjustment. So we lost that feature. If yours were halogen originally then LED was really the only option because upgrading to HID would have cost you well over $1000. There are tons of options going from halogen to LED. I wanted to get the ones with black insides, unfortunately that wasn’t available to us.
