I'd say you got a pretty good engine...glad to hear that. It needed work but not a total rebuild. Certainly better than the Spitfire engine I got with my car!
Elin, you sound exactly like my apprentice-master did in 1966 (me aged 16).So, I did not really need to do that engineering master apprenticeship at all, all I should have done is wait for Elin to explain it all for me free on you-tube. I am serious, how many 16-year-old guys are watching you right now? My guess; none at all, the kids have all been hypnotized into wanting it to be tough so that the "teachers" can claim the rent. This hone is a cheap manual hone, you can’t rely on it. I am sure if I try I would end up with an oval cylinder and probably oversized in the middle. That can be done in a machine shop only.
Hi Elin, thanks for this very informative video! I have a question: the Triumph TR6 engine does have cylinder liners that can be replaced, isn't it? Wouldn't it be better (or easier) to replace the liners, instead of reboring the cylinders?
The engine originally doesn’t have liners. It is a solid block. There are liners available that you can install in case your cylinders are worn past the last available piston size. In this case you bore the cylinders out and install the liners to bring the size back down. The TR2,3,4,4A engine has removable liners.
Tough call on the rebuild... head says it's perfectly fine as it is, put it back together and drive the car, heart says do that little bit extra when you consider all the effort to get the body perfect. I say leave it as is since it's apparently been cared for to be still in that condition...
If it was my engine I wouldn’t think twice before I go to .020 It is taken apart already so it is a matter of a little bit more investment to have a brand new engine. But it is not my decision. Half way through the tolerance us not that bad though. It has many more miles ahead of it so it is just me I guess

Couldn't you improve the taper by just honing from the centre to the bottom of each cylinder?

So 0.0022 inch is 2.2 thousandth of an inch or 2.2 thou
