    Brilliant comedy. Grew up with it 50 years ago and still find it funny. How times have changed- such striking cultural change.

      The last five minutes had some proper laugh out loud lines. From dropping the tea tray to take your weight off it then. Brilliant writing and although he’s a selfish thoughtless misanthropic git, I love Terry Collier.

    My brother and I used to watch it. Absolutely wonderful sitcom. So many memories. Can't believe it; as kids we used to play on Construction sites and the closing credits reminded me!

    Cracking 70s comedy that still raises laughs. I enjoyed it back then and still find it funny. Shame about the offscreen personal issue between Bolam and Bewes though. James Bolam went on to carve out quite a career in tv, but Bewes had disappeared off the screen by the early 80s.

    They were such a class act together with obviously the brilliant writing thrown in. Sad they seemed to fall out later. James Bolam seemed to want to dissociate himself with what made him famous in the first place. Shame.

      @@jujuoliver6959 yes. He really wasn't. I've only just found this out recently and it surprised me but it wasn't anything sinister it was just he didn't seem to get that he wasn't everybody's best friend to the point where it played a big part in why his career nosedived

    • @jujuoliver6959
      @jujuoliver6959 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@angiemetcalfe7210 arh ok. Well that explains some of it then. Maybe just not one of gang type, some people aren’t. I still think James Bolam was a bit of a prat though. I always remember him saying that apparently the best thing about Newcastle was the train out of there, which was a bit of a slap to the North East considering he initially made his career out of playing a the part he did ha ha. He wasn’t even from Newcastle, he was from Sunderland and I saw later interviews and his accent had changed considerably from his younger days. His wife Susan Jameson allegedly had a child she had adopted from a very early romance when she was started her career, apparently with a well known British 70s actor, now I believe the same person is in an actor’s retirement home, but when Mother and son finally met all those many years later after he tracked her down apparently she was quite cold and later had no interest in meeting him again according to the son’s version of events. I just get this vision of a pair of old snobs, him with ideas of grandeur and she quite a cold woman.

    Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
    Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
    Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
    Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
    Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
    Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
    Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
