Stretch Your Calves Against The Wall (CORRECTLY)

  • Are you looking to Stretch your calf against the wall to improve flexibility or decrease foot, ankle, or knee pain? You must do it correctly taking the joint through the full available range of motion. Using a wall to stretch the calf muscle can be very effective but must include rotation and lateral movement of the hips. Most people stretch their calf incorrectly against a wall by moving their foot outward or by bending their knee.

    Hi, Tim. Thank you for the video. Can you please help me? I feel like I'm stuck in a compensatory movement pattern. After walking, my right plantar fascia feels irritated and painful. I feel like my PF is doing a job it wasn't intended for while the appropriate muscle (maybe calf or anterior tibialis) isn't being recruited. My gastrocnemius and soleus are both very well stretched and I've ironed out any muscle knots with a foam roller + lacrosse ball so I don't think I'm dealing with a tightness issue. Do you have any suggestions on how I might recruit the right muscles in my lower leg while walking to stop my PF from compensating? Thank you very much.

      This is a very common complaint. Obviously hard for me to be specific without actually evaluating you but often the issues are related to lack of dorsiflexion in the ankle joint itself rather than the muscles. Have you sprained that ankle before? How well your big toe can dorsiflex (Move upward) also plays a role as does the ability of your hip to extend.     I have leg hair, so am I right in assuming that floss band thing is a no-go for me?

      You can use floss band for sure. I have plenty of hair on my legs. Just start with low tension and build up.
