Amazing video David! I think Hagia Sophia is the most beautiful christianic temple ever and the jewellry and legacy of Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine).
No, Hagia Sophia is a basilica belonging to the Roman Empire. Justinian I, who built it, is Roman, not Greek. The Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) is a Roman state, not a Greek state.
@@safaktunc4837 Yeah right Romans took everything and based their society according to Greeks same as turks which in reality as simply islamic Greeks. Perhaps you should review the history. What a same that Erdogan brainwashed all of you and all of turkey still lives in the denial.
There have been many legends, true or false, about Hagia Sophia. All from the cosmic situation of its location to internal details are based on legends. The perspiring column, the healing well, one of the doors made from Noah’s ark, the symbol of ‘Holy Grail’, and Hermes symbols are only some part of the legends. Nevertheless, none of the legends are as great as Hagia Sophia. Indeed, it is the legend itself. The moment Mehmet The Conqueror entered the city, he unwillingly showed his personality. Deeply influenced by the city’s glory, he immediately asked Rum and Frank bishops to learn the founders’ emperors of the city as well as the timeline. In the meantime, he made scholars to translate the books in Hagia Sophia to Turkish. At the end of the middle ages, Sultan was interested in ancient philosophy, but what is he looking for? Being the first public church in the Christian Roman Empire as well as the first main chapel in the Christian world, Hagia Sophia has been evoking admiration since then. The book tells the unique journey of Hagia Sophia.

What a waste , byzantines worked hard and spent fortunes to build this cathedral only to be taken by force by the invading ottoman turks to convert it into mosque , no wonder why the mongols lived in tents and did not bother to put one stone on top of another stone , in case of a loss in battle the mongols would have nothing to lose and the enemy would have nothing to gain
Have spent many weeks inside, oraying, studying it over more than 50 years. It is aSad sad to see the mosaic tesserae stolen bit by bit, plaster damge and with it mosaics destroyed. To get an idea how beautiful it was, google Kariye cami, the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora (Byzantine neighborhood, just inside the walls in the NW corner of city. Worth the airfare just for these two, but see also Blue Mosque, Yere Batan cistern across street (James Bond from Russia with love). Take ferry boat up Bosphorus, and to Adalar (islands) and visit Buyukada, the bigest one. Bring money! Turkey also has wonderful food. Best lamb, not greasy like in USA. Visit the church of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Fener (sort of Pope of the East)
Byzantine hymns chanted in the most beautiful Christian church. Will always be Christian no matter what.
Great video, great monument, great civilization!
Kudos to the Turks for not destroying it!

Hagia Sophia does not belong to Turkey
@@neila8663 speaking technically, it does.
You should study the speeches of Constantine XI and Mehmet II before the battle, that would tell you all about who had the moral advantage

@@Thanos_Kyriakopoulos I know that. I read it in the book of the Greek historian Kritovulos. He totally sees Mehmet right.
