Hagia Sophia officially the Hagia Sophia Holy Grand Mosque and formerly the Church of Hagia Sophia, is a Late Antique place of worship in Istanbul, designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. Built in 537 as the patriarchal cathedral of the imperial capital of Constantinople, it was the largest Christian church of the eastern Roman Empire (the Byzantine Empire) and the Eastern Orthodox Church, except during the Latin Empire from 1204 to 1261, when it became the city's Latin Catholic cathedral. In 1453, after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. In 1935, the secular Turkish Republic established it as a museum. In 2020, it controversially re-opened as a mosque.

To me it looks more like a crowded airport hall. It has supreme and sublime beauty, but tourists destroy all the sacred atmosphere of this place. They chat, and sit on the floor, make noise that shows little respect to this sacred place on their behalf. I would impose silence as a basic rule for being let in. Reverence and silence.

Simply beautiful. Regardless of the fact that this was a Cathedral in the Roman Empire under emperor Justinian's rule, when Istanbul was called Constantinople and the Hagia Sophia was built as a Cathedral for the Eastern Orthodox Christians. The builders were Anthimius and Isidore. Many years later, the Ottomans stripped down many artworks of this Cathedral to cater to the Muslims. Anyways, point being lets look at it as a beautiful structure from ancient times that brings people together vs finding differences between religions. Amen and Peace ✌

A lot of fighting in the comments over this church. For better or for worse the building was a mosque from 1453 to 1935 the building was a mosque. For approx 85 years it was a museum due to Ataturk. At the same time, mosaics were uncovered. In 2020 another Turkish government turned it into a mosque once more. The sovereignty of the building is NOT in dispute. It belongs to the state of Turkey (whether one likes this fact or not). It has complete liberty to do what it wishes as a sovereign with it's own building. What it chose to do, is not necessarily the best decision. Turgut Ozal had proposed that Haghia Sophia function as a museum but function as a mosque for two major Muslim celebrations and as a Church for two days Christmas and Easter). The deal did not go through for other reasons. That would have been probably the best. However, my opinion is irrelevant. I am not the one making the decision. The Turkish state is the one which is entitled to make such a decision. I am Orthodox however, the idea that my entire being should be consumed by a building that has not been mine for over 500 years, is beyond absurd.

Our beloved Prophet peace and blessings upon him prophesied the conquest of Constantinople after the Malhama (nuclear war) by the Muslims.
Why do you think it will happen after the Great War? Because we will correct the mistake made by Muslims in history and return the Hagia Sophia to our orthodox Christian brothers. This will be a means of alliance between the followers of Nabi Muhammad and Nabi Isa peace and blessing upon both of them. And that’s ultimately bad news for Israel at that time 👍🏽

Bah, another heretic who follows the idiot called Imran Hosein and his idiocracy, instead of the Prophet Sallallahu Aleyhi Ve's-Sellem. Constantinople was already conquered second time by Muslims without shooting a single bullet after 5 years of occupation by Christians. According to your idiot Sheikh, Allah will grant a second victory to Orthodoxes after some years instead of Muslims. While siyah clearly states that after victory of Romans Muslims will be granted victory and it already happened just in the same time period, exactly the same land and even against exactly same Romans and even the same Roman emperor. You idiots are no different from saint worshipper Orthodox people.
And who the hell you are that dare to mention to give our property away? Your people were not the people who fought against crusaders, Christians, heretics and what else, not you are. And when the time will come we will fight again against all alone, not you and yours like.

its a mosque, not a church. originally was a church, but was rightfully converted to a mosque and is a mosque for over 500 years. no matter how much you deny or cry, you cant change this fact, and thats a good thing. the great emperor Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han made one of histories greatest achivements by conquering this city and preserving its buildings for the future. christians should be grateful for this fact and that the muslim turks didnt burn down religious buildings, like the christian spains for example did, during the reconquista, destroying nearly every islamic architecture in al andalus. i also think, that Fatih Sultan Mehmet made a very good achievement, when the conquered and defeated peoples grand-grand-children still cry after 500 years. what a great historical achievment that is :)

@@stardust2270 destroying sacral buildings was a common Christian thing. For example the Spaniards destroyed every islamic building after the reconquista. But I think the muslims did it better not to destroy sacral buildings like the Aya Sofya, so it was preserved for future generations and is a loving epic symbol of triumph. I don't care which religion you belong to. You should accept the facts and reality, that Aya Sofya is a mosque now and used to worship the one God.
