I can empathise with your frustration, I found German very slow and harder than expected. I would warn against Krashen’s theories, they are too simplistic and not supported by evidence. I followed his ideas for German for a year, and progress was glacial. I then abandoned his ideas, and started learning the traditional way, and progress increased dramatically. Thus I now explicitly study grammar, and memorise words. Input is most useful in more advanced stages, when the student needs to consolidate their knowledge and develop an intuitive understanding of the language. I use huge amounts of input for French.
