Just got a VO-1600. The erase and audio heads show no sign of wear. This is to recover some U-Matic tapes of local Santa Cruz bands I helped make back in the early 80's on a similar deck. Great video. Thanks!

I'm running a V2000 machine right now as it happens, the VR2324.
I have also had reel motor failure on these, and a capstan motor fail-with the capstan motor, the shaft housing (made of pot metal) had deteriorated and warped. Luckily I had a scrap motor that a good shaft housing. It’s also worth wearing gloves with these machines, as some of the pressed metal pieces can have razor sharp edges !
i used to have to clean the heads on these all the time. When i was working in a video kit hire checkout back in the early 90's

My 9800.. yikes.. on power with no tape it moves halfway and only the stop and eject will work. One moves it back to start and the other halfway. Any ideas??
Thanks so much! I'm a step further in repairing my VO-9600p, i think the fuse you mentioned has burnt in mine, would you please share how to use correctly the test points on the board to check that?
My Betacam deck sometimes won't come on at all, as though it's not plugged in but it is. I had it happen a couple times and then start working perfectly again and run for several months around the clock. Now it has quit again. When it works it works perfectly, not a tape path problem or anything like that. Any ideas?
Intermittent problems are a pain. It sounds like the power supply is not always starting up properly, maybe due to a bad capacitor in the primary side of the power supply chopper circuit. I would be looking at low value capacitors around the primary side of the circuit, also check any high value resistors in that area.

Sorry, not a task I've every had to do. The first thing to do is look at the service manual, which is readily downloaded (VO9800 is virtually the same).

Very informative video. Thanks. I have a vo-9800p and I am having problems with the audio getting way to loud on the input in my capture card. It is like this machine sends over the top high audio. Do ypu know what is causing that? I use the xlr utputs into my rca inputs on my black magic capture card.
As a workaround, try the headphone output of the video recorder, since the level can be adjusted. It might be that your balanced to unbalanced cable is causing a problem with the capture system.

Is it ever needed to lubricate any of the gears or moving parts? I have an old u-matic and old betacam player. I do the occasional cleaning but was curious should I lubricate any thing and with WHAT?, thanks
Colin, I changed all the belts but the loading ring is stuck in the furthest back position. I managed to manually loosen it by turning the motor belt wheel but it gets stuck in the same position when loading a tape and pressing play. Then it wont go back...
Possibly dried up grease, or something has landed in the gearing. Turn it by hand and look carefully at the gears to loading ring connection. If the teeth all look OK, it may be the loading ring itself which is jamming up, it could require a tiny dot of oil in just the right spot.

I found out whats causing the problem. The handle in the back on the right side that locks the whole loading mechanism in the end of the lacing. It has to be helped with a little manual push to get it back when ejecting. Maybe I have to take it out and clean, regrease and mount it back in?
What is your take on tape baking? I am archiving some of my video from 1980 on. Have 2 VO9850 machines. Some tapes work some don't. Those that don't make the machines squeal and fail to playback. Tape or machines? Thank you for a really useful film.

Tape baking certainly can work. Ampex tapes need this treatment as a matter of course.
it looks like Criclewood electronics does not list the two belts mentioned in the description. (the square section belts...69x2 and 34x2) Do you have any other ideas on a source?
Probably best to just do a search on eBay for "cassette belts" of the sizes. Care because some cheap belts are really thin.

Check the Local/Remote switch.

You make me very nervous when you say that replacing the worm drive with the teeeeeny tiny washers intact is fiddly. I'm so clumsy (worse each passing year) that I picture myself making quite a mess of it
Hello, thank you for the very informative video. I have two VO5850P units and I need/want to replace all the belts. I am having difficulty sourcing them. I also don't know what I am looking for exactly. Any ideas?
Just measure the existing belts and do a search on eBay or similar for "cassette belts". You should be able to find something suitable. Usually they are designated in diameter, so you may have to calculate that, allowing for some stretch. You may also need a reel idler drive tyre, that can be a bit harder to source.
I've got a VO-9600 that was working fine but now, when powered on, the drum starts spinning and that's it - there's no display, no error messages, none of the controls work, I can't insert a tape, I can't do anything. The drum just spins incessantly. Do you have any thoughts on what might be going on? Thank you!
It sounds like a power supply problem. Check that the 5V line is present throughout. Can't offer much more detail than that I'm afraid.
I have a Sony Umatic vo-5600 that won't play. The tape will load, it will fast forward and rewind but it doesn't respond when you press the play button. any suggestions?
Check that it's not in remote operation, I think there's a switch at the back for this.
Thanks for a very informative video. I've got a Sony VO-9600P problem and was hoping you could offer some advice. All the mechanics work fine but the after a few minutes of playback the picture just goes to black. The sound continues but no picture. After a little rest, if I run the machine again, the picture comes back but only for a few minutes. I'd be very grateful for any ideas you may have as to why this is happening. Richard.
I'm afraid that's likely to be bad electrolytic capacitors on the video processing boards. The boards are easy to get out, but there may be a lot of capacitors in there. I've not had to do this process on these machines so I can't offer much more advice than that. An ESR meter would be useful if you don't plan to just blanket replace all electrolytic capacitors.
@@video99couk Thanks Colin for the prompt reply. I failed to mention that the E to E circuit still works when I put a video feed to the line input. Fixing capacitors is a bit above my skills. I just to digitise a few U-matic tapes so looks like I’ll have to do it bit by bit. Thanks again for your help. Richard
@@crackingtoast123 If E-E works, that helps to eliminate some of the circuitry. But yes, capacitor changing, especially in quantity, is a daunting task.
I have one in standby mode. Edit led is on and front panel doesn't work. Also stuck in Forward mode. All this After removing the cassette upper case. Anyone knows how to proceed?
Probably one of the tape end opto-sensors has been knocked out of aligment.
@@video99couk thanks for your replying. The standby led and also the forward led is on and the middle gear roll running without the tape inside. And sometimes jog led appears intermittent but the edit led sticks there and also no time code or error at the panel
I would assume that the VO-9600 is almost the same, to replace the belts and idler?
I don't have a VO9600 to hand but I believe it uses the same deck.
What diameter should the wheel idler tyre have?
Sorry I don't have the dimensions to hand, best to measure the old one. Not every Umatic machine uses the same sized idler tyres.
I don't have the old one, I think it have been removed by another one previously. Can I measure the spindle you think?
Hi Colin, thank you for your amazing videos. I don't know if you can help me. I've a vo-9600p. It plays and goes forward but when I try to rewind the tape it blocks and I've to eject the cassette and insert it again if I want to play it again. Do you have any idea about the problem? Sorry for my English 🤗
I would look at the reel idler tyre and reel drive belt, easy to access from underneath. Watch what happens when you select rewind.

Ho colin, you are right. It's the reel drive belt. It's the most visible belt accessing from the bottom of the recorder. I can see it's very flabby... do you know where to find a replacement? Thank you for your help ❤️
Thank you for your last reply. As I said I have two VO-5850P machines. One of the machines loads the tape then, when you go to play, it partially loads the tape then stops and starts clicking! any ideas? The other machine plays but only in black and white. I have cleaned all the electrical connectors. I have (with one particular tape) got some colour image but for a short time. Any ideas? as this machine works to some extent, I am trying to get this machine operational. Is it worth me changing some of the boards over? I cant seem to get a schematic anywhere, unless I pay for a monthly subscription. I really need some help.
Capacitor failure isn't unknown on these machines. It's certainly worth panel swapping a bit to see if you can at least isolate which board is causing the colour fault. Not sure what the mechanical problem is caused by. I would look at the loading motor to see if it's getting jammed up, it's quite easy to access.

Have a Sony VO-5850. Audio and video is perfect on prerecorded tapes but upon recording, video is present but NO audio or very low/distoted.
Assuming that the VU meters respond OK during recording: That's going to require a service manual and an oscilloscope to resolve. There's no simple fix for a fault like that. Areas to look at would be the bias oscillator and power supplies to the audio amplifier circuits.

@@sherrieanne5675 Oh that's interesting. And both channels don't record properly? I'm certainly leaning towards a problem with power to or on the audio circuits. I once had a semiconductor type fuse go resistive inside a Umatic machine and that gave odd results. The other likely culprit of course will be capacitor failure somewhere. You can only go through it with the diagrams, a scope and signal generators. I don't know if you can get good access to the audio circuits though, you may need a card extender.

Are you talking about the 7 pin Dub connector on the back of a Umatic format deck? I plan on doing a video about those some time this year, but the first thing to remember is that the Dub signal is a special type which only works with equipment specially designed for it. And no such equipment uses RCA connectors. So why would you want Dub to RCA? I wonder if you have got a bit confused about the signal types. What are you trying to connect up?
video99.co.uk yes. I'm talking about the 7 pin connector on the back of umatic VTRs such as bvu950, vo9850. There is a special adapter/cable that converts dub signals to s-video/RCA. It was sold on BHphotos, and a few other websites. It is now nowhere to be found...
video99.co.uk i'm trying to use the dub connector to lead the signal to S-video input in the dvd recorder. And I'm digitalizing umatic tapes.
@@vietnamintlvideo422 That won't get you anywhere I'm afraid. Dub and S-Video are completely incompatible because they use different frequencies. You would need to find a piece of equipment which can do the conversion for you, such as a professional Timebase Corrector. It's not something you can just put together with a few components, Dub to S-Video is a complex conversion.
