The first time I read "Ulysses" about 30 years ago I read it without any study guide but after a few pages started reading aloud and found it so enjoyable to do so. The language is so musical! A few years ago I decided to read it again and to really decipher the "bits and pieces" that you alluded too. So I read the novel along with "Ulysses Annotated" by Gifford and Seidman which I highly recommend for nerdy readers (like myself) who want to understand every allusion and reference in the book. But definitely, read it aloud!
Good video. I have had Ulysses on my bookshelf for years, vowing to "take the plunge" some day. Well, 2024 is the year (I'm 79 so it's past time to get crackin'. What you're saying about second and third reads of books is so true; I love rereading a good book.
Yes, I like revisiting works, especially after some time has passed. As you have probably experienced, different themes/motifs/ideas will resonate in different stages of life. Even if the time between reads is brief, there’s always something newly discovered.

I enjoy the fact that a lot of the characters in _Dubliners_ reappear in _U._ Were doing a group read of the novel in July, so Im happy to see your videos! (I also have the same, exact, ceramic "Happy Buddha" upon my shelf, as well 📿)

The title got your click, right? When it really comes down to the message, the content was more about how to encourage people to not be daunted than anything.
Read "Dubliners" & "Portrait of the Artist". Good stories but far too much religious BS for my taste. Even read the first 32 pages of "Finnegan's Wake", which was funny & far too personal (i.e., Joyce wrote it strictly for himself to read & chortle over). I found it to be a waste of time. I've tried reading "Ulysses"--3 times--& made it as far as page 60. I found it boring. Great literature's in the mind of the reader, not in the words of the critics.
Have you made any of these mistakes? Or, do you have any other great tips on what to (not) do when reading it for the first time?

I think people should read books without youtubers telling them (in advance) not to "make reading mistakes".
