- Palworld's Early Access launch reviewed by Travis Northup on PC through Steam, also available on Xbox.
Even in its Early Access state, Palworld is amusingly irreverent, has a surprising amount of content and deep survival mechanics, and is absurdly difficult to put down. It’s impossible to overlook just how shamelessly it takes ideas and designs from Pokémon, it’s got some unsurprising bugs and performance issues, and the work of keeping your base’s supplies topped off needs a little retuning - but when you’re riding on the back of a flying dragon while shooting a blue duck with an assault rifle, most of those blemishes wash away entirely.
Note that this review is specifically of the PC version of Palworld available through Steam. Because the Xbox version and the PC version available via the Microsoft Store (both on Game Pass) has significantly more issues and different features, which the developer says is due to the certification process, we will post a separate review of that version later this week.

Will be expecting a review on the PS5 version once the game gets out of early access next year and is put onto the PS store.

More pals and dungeons would be nice but it’s not as big a deal as PvP. They already said they’re adding it so we just have to wait.
But PvP gives the game a longer shelf life than adding pals could ever do.

@@rayan222osu8it's not mentioned in this list but their roadmap did said "improvements to the Pals tracking and AI system" so they will improve on that part. Nothing about story mode or adding a story yet tho.
Palworld is the best example to show, just how lazy gamefreak has been with the Pokemon franchise.
Just want to clarify, gamefreak is not lazy, They are overworked okay, the studio itself don't have enough manpower to make the games that they want to make and the pokémon company refuses to let them outsource or bring in help and that's also Nintendo's fault to blame too. If you want to blame anyone, blame Nintendo for letting the quality get that low and blame the pokémon company for not giving them any extra support

[PalWorld really shows the power of 'economies of scale'. That you don't have to price games at $70; you can still make a truckload of money by getting a game into as many consoles/pc as possible with a consumer friendly price]
This is a Budget title. Most games of triple a quality cost over 200 million dollars to make. 30 dollars is way too low for most games.

Its gonna be tough for me to return to normal survival games after this. Having pals gather resources and do tasks at base was incredibly helpful, and let me have more time to explore and progress.
So Sword/Shield gets a 9 but this gets a 8? This game is head and shoulders above anything Pokémon has made in a decade.

Not a bad score given its (honestly not terribly game ruining) bugs and issues that still need some ironing but the game is early access so I'd imagine once they fix everything the game will be a solid 9+

The Pokémon company knows they have 2 audiences at this point: Kids and the prior generations who are now adults. They won’t appease the adult audience because it could compromise the cash they bring in from the primary audience of younger players. It is interesting though, a franchise that could appease both but they wont take the risk despite it having the potential to gain even more revenue. I’m glad the market is open for stuff like this as a result though!
Do a player need to start the server in the steam version? Because for the xbox version if the host is not available, basically nobody can play lol

Seems most of the game crashes are related to multiplayer.

Crazy what a group of 22 developers and a few million in funding can do. While a multi-billion dollar company barely seems to try.
CORRECTION: It was about 50 thousand dollars. This should put things in perspective of how much effort bigger companies actually put into their games.

You can catch and butcher them, but you can't eat them. They only drop loot. You can't make them breed either, because the game specifically states that they're not pals.

When you look at the guns next to the player models its like they are from different games the art doesn't match up hopefully its all placeholder or something?
Based on the article written by the CEO, the gun artist is a hobbyist of making gun reload animation, he's no professional graphic artist. So the CEO let him do what he likes as long it works in the game. They have no budget to hire professional artist.

The “violence” towards Pokémon has always been implied. People eat Pokémon, use them for labor and fight with them for sport. Also, Palworld is perfect for people who are nostalgic for Pokémon but are mature enough to be put off by it’s often overly kid oriented themes and difficultly.
They gotta fix the keybind settings bug. Not being able to change the keybinds because the game thinks that key is already bound to something else when it is not is infuriating. Especially when it won't let you save your graphic settings because it still thinks the keys are conflicting and therefore won't let you exit the settings menu.

Palworld is the start of the Pokemon franchise collapse and the rise of the new Palworld franchise....it's a complete and better competitor that is just a better thing all around. The Pokemon Company has a hard fight ahead of them if they intend to remain supreme.
GameFreak and Nintendo have no excuses whatsoever now for how poor in quality their Pokemon games are, especially after Palworld, who have nowhere near the financial backing that GameFreak has. Hopefully Pokemon fans stop being such pushovers after this.

Palworld reminds me a lot of this mobile game called Chimeraland.
We been begging Pokémon company for almost 20 years to drop a solid open world Pokémon experience. Im glad someone stepped up.

This game would be so much better if it had a nice story with cut scenes and the monsters evolved, it would also be nice if they made the combat a bit more interactive, because it feels like just smack untill they die.

Imagine another knockoff called Digiworld inspired from Digimon. The trend we see with Foamstar replicating Splatoon is a tip of the iceberg. These were symptoms of bigger problems in game development. Developers afraid to explore new game design, new game mechanic, and new game ideas. So they clone popular game with different clothes. Notice why Animated Movie now look alike? Similar problem. Final Fantasy XVI basically Game of Thrones clone. If this continues like this then we would be saturated similar to MCU fatigue but on gaming.

Dude this game is NOT a ten. It’s fun but lacks in major areas. There are better designed, more original, and better balanced survival games all over the place that aren’t tens either. 8 is exactly what it deserved
Besides the Pal designs being obviously bootlegged Pokémon, it’s worth noting that the Box system is completely identical to Pokémon’s. Specifically the Pastures found in Legends Arceus: round icons, 30 total per box with a 6x5 grid, and a closeup view of each creature. If you squint you might think they’re the same. Nintendo is going to shut this down HARD.

You can't sue somebody if they made up their own kinds of anime creatures, regardless of if they look similar or not. Nintendo created and owns pokemon, not Pals.. if companies were allowed to own art styles and game mechanics indefinitely then there would be a massive issue, not just for palworld, but for literally every content creator in the world.
