I always knew about gambling addiction I didn't realize how powerful it was until I started working part time doing valet for a casino in my area some years back. People coming out in tears saying they lost the rent, light bill, car payment, fill in the blank. Spouses knocking on the valet and the security office doors showing us pics of them and their car begging us not to allow them inside. It's awful

@@miketheyunggod2534 I know a few professional gamblers seems like a nightmare as bookies will regularly cancel bets and look for ways out of payouts when they spot regular patterns. They will restrict how much you can place and do everything to restricting payouts. If your a regular loser there is no such restriction.

When you see multi millionaire sports stars lose everything to gambling you realise it's not about the money. There is a high linked to gambling that people are completely hooked on that means there is no limit to what they are willing to spend to get that win. A reason I despise micro transactions on modern. Computer games where they encourage children to spend a lot of money on mystery boxes and mystery players. It should be illegal.

I was where he is several years ago. its hard, and its still hard even though I haven't gambled in over a year. the thing that helped me the most was finding something to do that filled my time and also helped me make extra money instead of losing the money I was earning with my job. I started a side hustle that grew and grew, and then i started selling stuff on ebay , and just kept filling my time with activities that puled me away from gambling. its hard and its not easy, and there will always be a gambler inside me. but my will to keep him at bay is stronger. because if i let him out i would loose everything.

Thing is, having come out the other side, I think one of the only and best things anyone can do is to take accountability for it. It sounds harsh but to not blame yourself is to play the victim and blame it on something or someone else is the wrong way. It wasn’t $5 or $10 bets, it was a $100 bet 😩 we told him ABSOLUTELY NOT! He was telling us he won this game. His friend has yet to pay him and I hope he doesn’t get paid. Maybe it will make him think twice about making these types of bets. My son had a lump sum of money, but that has dwindled down and he isn’t working yet since he plays football. Hopefully he will start working in a couple months bc he has too much extra time on his hands after football practice.

I see all these DraftKings commercials and it’s so predatory and pisses me off. I have sports betting accounts, and fortunately have lots of self control with it, but I know it’s set up for others to fail. Makes me so angry.

I only disagree with the part where she says finding the root cause will help. Sometimes there’s no « emotional root cause », u just have a brain susceptible to a specific addiction and when it takes root, you downregulate your dopamine receptors and not giving in to that addiction feels extremely uncomfortable and miserable. The only way to heal your brain is to abstain forever from it.

    • @clarifyingquestions

Brain susceptibility - you are correct but environment either supports or prevents. This is true for all addictions and mental health.

False. I hate how everyone is pedaling this bs genetic predisposition stuff nowadays. The other guy is correct, yes there are different genes that control different factors of who you are, however environment plays a much larger role in that than genes. Anyone who denies this is out of touch with themselves, as I used to be.

FLEE from temptation: anyone that gambles is out of your life, don’t watch sports, don’t hang around guys that talk about sports. Install a content blocker on your home network and your phone. If you live in a community where there is gambling, MOVE. See any source of access to gambling as literal FIRE that will consume you and just like a raging forest fire coming towards you RUN as fast as you can the other direction. Anything less is not taking it seriously.

this was me in my early 20's. I went to treatment for that and alcohol and worked a 12 step program for AA. That has worked for me over 10 years. I can't imagine still compulsively gambling at this point. After "giving that up", I was able to build a life, get married and have kids, which provided more joy than the endless nightmare of gambling all while I called it "fun". Admitting it is more than half the problem - then taking action is next - reach out for help - GA / AA - and someone will be there to pick up the other side always and provide hope and next steps. Good luck.

I’ve never been a gambler if I go to a casino which I’ve only been a few times and when I did I would either bring money with me or take money out there but It would be like 50 or 100 bucks and when it’s gone that’s it I don’t take any more money out im not keep taking money out to loose it just makes no sense to me specially it’s widely known that the house always wins. Im glad I never got into gambling some people in my family were big into it. My uncle had to check himself out of the casinos in my area and he actually went back he won a bunch of money and they didn’t give it to him because he checked himself out. He makes 100k per year but spends all his extra cash at the casino. My other uncle grew up in a very wealthy family but gambling and drugs ruined his life he had no reason to gamble the family were multi millionaires no reason to even think about gambling but he did just made no sense to me
