🍟 ON TODAY'S MENU: In a word, INC64PTION™. One of the downsides of a fun device called "THEC64 Mini" is that the keyboard is a bit of a dummy. So I wondered if I could use the real Commodore 64 keyboard to give it full functionality, just like the original. But, as this is Retro Recipes: 'Retro with a Twist', I wanted to go further and actually see if I could install the entire C64 Mini inside the real Commodore 64 case, keyboard, original 80s Speedking joystick and all, using a Keyrah v2b! Sort of Russian Nesting Commodores. Let's find out if it works, and how you can WIN the signed machine worldwide, including the case, the keyboard, Keyrah and the USB joystick... Let me know what you think in the comments!

Thanks for watching! Do the perks of this new configuration (game save/load, HDMI, not needing to install RetroPie & ROMs etc.) intrigue you, or do you still prefer an original C64 like I think I do? Do ALL good things come in small packages? Comment below and cheerio! 👍🕹️

Good idea but I would have probably striped it out of the case anyway to extend the ports and glue extension sockets lined up with the back holes to not be stuck with wires permanently coming out of it

The point is the fun of the fact they look the same which seemed fun and many people own the Mini, don't want to mess around with installing RetroPie, they like the Mini launcher, and could do this themselves. Thanks for watching.

Several thousand years ago, aliens land on earth. They determine that this particular artifact is from the early stages of computing on this planet. Then they open it up to see how it works, and are absolutely bewildered by the miniature version of this machine within the machine itself. They determine that this must somehow be important, but do not know why...
Then, they crack open the planet, find the massive iron core within, and everything makes sense...

Protips: use a small pair of cutting pliers and you'll never break off the wrong number of header pins. There's a groove the pliers will fit into. Use a solder glob on ONE pin to hold the header in, preferably not the one you're touching. Ouch. Straighten it with the solder hot. Release, and do the others. No putty on your pins either.

I was thinking the same thing to try once the US version was released. I purchased a complete C64c setup including the 1541 II drive which was my first computer. I will use the SD drive though for software but will still get the mini. They would need to bump up the chip count on the peripheral board to make it show up as 3 separate USB devices (a keyboard and 2 game controllers). You could get around this by hand wiring 2 C64-USB adapters into the ports and fitting an USB hub inside.

Made my way here having watched the recent 8-Bit Guy vid and had a look around and subbed and ding-ding'd too.
Always been a fan of retro tech and grew up on our island in the age of 8 bit UK home computers but we wanted quality graphics and 'real' PCM sampled sounds (like the Amiga later delivered) yet we look back on the 8 bit days so fondly as there was a degree of magic surrounding computers that is not around today.
It's good that there are a lot of people looking to look back fondly on the times and repair old computers to tell stories about them and let us who lived thru it the time recall old memories and laugh at the ghetto graphics of ZX Spectrum's and C64's but there really was a magic back in the day!

I am planning on doing the exact same thing. Does the keyrah work with all the games? I plan on using d64 and T64 files. Will the C64 mini be able to handle them and what about games that have multiple d64 files. Will it know how to go to next disk? Sorry for all the questions. I am new at this? Just want to make sure before I invest.

    • @RetroRecipes

I'm looking for a cheap adapter to use my old 9 pin quickshot joystick on my mini.
I'd also like a 3d printed mini tape deck with a USB hub put inside it.
And lastly.. I'm looking for a way to convert old c64 tapes into roms. I made a game on my original c64 and it's now on a tape.

I still prefer the original thing, but sometimes it would be easier to just plug in this easy solution to my living room telly. That's what she said? I agree, convenience for the living room, and the originals in the man/woman cave 👍🕹️

Hi, I’m actually in the process of giving this project a shot, but I didn’t spot a link to the USB header seen in the video when you hooked the Mini to the Keyrah. Do you have a recommendation on which one to use?

Hey! I saw you at the geek fest in gander newfoundland a little while ago, and then when I found this channel I was so confused because I thought you looked exactly like yourself (which makes sense) and then I realized it was you.

Hi, I want to use an adapter to connect my full sized THEC64 with original competition Pro joysticks, but I can't find the Keyrah v2b on the linked sellers page. He has only Amiga stuff.

      @RetroRecipes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the heads up. I have updated the link to icomp.de/shop-icomp/en/produkt-details/product/keyrah-v2.html

Retro Recipes thank you! Ah, maybe I am wrong, but as the full sized THEC64 has already a working keyboard I maybe need another interface just to connect my original joysticks? Asking because it's named Keyrah and not Joyrah. :)

@@Jauly Ah I see what you're trying to do. For that you'll need this: www.retronicdesign.com/en/ Make sure you flash their latest firmware to make it work with THEC64.

That was a cool little project. And it just fit in there, phew. A shame about the poor original joystick incompatibility -- that does sound like a future firmware enhancement. Nice work!

Beautiful puppy's. Do they come with it as well LOL. Wait a second, my 2 cats probably wouldn't be happy with that. Does being a cat person exclude me from entering? Just kidding. Another great job putting it together! Have been eyeing the Keyrah for a while thinking about doing something similar - never thought about using one to put a Mini inside an original case though, really very creative! Anyhow, once again a great video and hoping I can win this! Crossing my fingers x. Keep up the great work!!

I have a keyrah and mine does the same as yours where not all characters match the relevant keys , I’m very disappointed with this as thought that was the whole idea of the kayrah , has anyone found a way around this ?
