I think, regarding Zayn, it is quite natural for him to spend a lot of time and effort (and, money ofc.) into his music videos cause 1.) after being in 1d, he really wanted to be hands on every part of his creations, from writing on every song he releases to paying attention to details in music videos; 2.) he himself is quite artistic in many ways, he likes to draw and do dribbles in his free time, he always appreciates fan art and other things so i feel like the visual representation to his songs is very important to him; 3.) his music has a lot of story telling in it (the whole concept of Icarus Falls and releasing an actual album of 27 songs just to be sure the story is told fully - it must mean something) so i think also making quality music videos that emphasise the story line he had in his mind is important to him. you can see it in all of his music videos that he loves to tell stories and i think it's really cool cause these days ppl don't even watch music videos that much unless they are big fans of the artists. so i feel like seeing the story in mv helps to visualise the feeling the artist had when writing this song in some ways.
You took the words out of my mouth. I think in many ways, Zayn isn't just a singer - he's a story teller, and that's part of the reason he's my favorite artist.
Ok- as someone that has followed him forever, the videos that he spends money on are deeply important to him. Sometimes the videos don’t necessarily match up with the meaning behind the song either. As you heard, this song essentially is about rebirth. The lotus flower and the bird flying away at the end are symbolic of that. The video was gorgeous. Zayn is a genius. His streaming numbers are better than just about every other artist, but his are probably more important due to the fact that he promotes nothing right now. He produces almost all his stuff now. Keep reacting to his stuff because he is amazing. He just is..🤩🤩🤩🤩
Zayn is an Artist artist. The visuals are extremely important to him. This is a man whose streaming numbers are ridiculous and he does very little to no promo and has rarely performed live (Imagine if he actually did). He releases songs whenever he wants it seems so I don’t think a video hinders that to be honest. He’s a different kind of artist for sure especially when looking at what’s out there today.
To your question, I think mvs are great for most artists bc people spend a lot of time on youtube and a good mv can get replayed numerous times and shared a lot easier than a song w/o a visual. I think it really depends on the artist and their intentions, but a good visual almost always enhances a song and if ppl don't like it, they'll stream the song w/o the video. A really good mv can bring way more attention to a song and artist than just having a lot of good songs. I think Normani is a great example of this. Her Motivation mv made her more well known as a solo artist, but she has had quite a few songs that didn't get much main stream attention. In terms the opportunity cost of a good mv vs more songs, Zayn is a hard example bc he gives great mvs and a lot of songs on his albums. But he doesn't perform, so since he comes up with the concepts for his mvs, they are how we get his vision for his songs. In most cases though, I think the real answer is to spend the money on a good mv bc once you gain a fan from your mv, they'll wait for the new music. You may not catch a lot of people's attention without a mv. I've watched this mv numerous times bc the visual adds so much to meaning of the song, especially bc if not for the video, I wouldn't have connected Flower Interlude (from Mind of Mind), which is written at the beginning of the mv to Satisfaction. Connecting the songs and the visual at the end of mv is such a powerful message that gets lost when you just listen to this song as 1/27 on Icarus Falls. The mv made it one of my fav songs on the album.
the lotus and bird are VERY much part of zayn's past and present. the symbolism is deep and you have to study him to know what they mean. the video with the music is a very strong message with meaningful intent.
I think as far as Zayn is concern in particular people want videos because the man has not toured since leaving 1 Direction in 2015. And I can only think of seeing him do 3 shows one song each. There for to see him perform in any way is a treat. Plus I loved MTV and still like music videos.
When I was growing up MTV and VH1 were huge so that's how I mostly listened to music but when you asked that question I realized I don't watch music videos that much anymore even though I stream music all the time. I still enjoy watching them if there's an interesting concept behind them but music videos aren't the first place I turn to consume music. I don't think they're necessary to consume music anymore but I think from an artist's point of view they're still a useful promotional tool but maybe that'll change as platforms like TikTok take over. With Zayn, he already makes a lot of music regardless and he doesn't really promote so I'm not sure I'd want him to stop making music videos too unless it means we'd actually get some live performances out of him again. Now that would be a great trade.
I actually watch music videos a lot because I prefer TH-cam to Spotify or any other music app, so whenever I play a song I play the actual music video even if I don't really sit and watch it. But I know that's not really common, most people watch the music videos only a couple of times and it's true that the money could actually go into the music but I think it's nice to have visuals for certain songs.
I agree! I also think that music videos must generate a profit which can later be invested into future projects. This creates an endless cycle of more and more music. So I think they are beneficial for most artists. Otherwise they would stop doing them. At the same time it's cool to watch a music video. It adds another element to the song and allows you to "see" the song from a different point of view.
For me, when i listen to a song, i can really imagine a situation behind it and i think the music video works as the artist's vision for that too. Also, i just LOVE this particular mv, the story is beautiful and its soooooooo meaningful. Thanks for reacting :)
Dude, this album (Icarus Falls) has almost 30 tracks. I think Zayn found the perfect balance between the amount of music he includes in each album and the quality of his music videos.
To answer your question about music video vs. more music to stream I think it comes down to the individual artist. You're right that in the 80s and most of the 90s music videos were a huge boost for artists (I know because I grew up during that era and used to stay up every Friday night until like 1AM to watch Friday Night Videos because our cable didn't have MTV until I was in high school). A great music video itself could boost single/record sales by millions. By the early 2000s, a lot of musicians stopped making as many videos, or spent less money on them, because streaming was starting to take over. I feel like in the time we're in now it's really dependent on the artist. Zayn, for example, relies on music videos because he doesn't tour or do much promo for his music. So music videos are a way for him to give to the fans what they're missing by not getting any live performances. Plus, Zayn is artistic in many ways (artist, poet, etc.) and I think he really loves to tell stories through his videos. It used to be that if you had a great video word of mouth would get around and your record would get more radio play. Now, videos have nothing to do with radio play, for the most part. It's extremely hard for anyone to get radio play for their singles, because it's essentially all decided upon by the label heads now. DJs can't just hear a song they like and then decide they're going to start playing it on their station. They have to be given the okay to play it by the label in most cases. Videos can impact streaming numbers though, so I can see the value in continuing to make them, especially with the popularity of TH-cam. With that said, I don't watch music videos that often (with a few exceptions for a few favorite artists) and find most of the new music I listen to through Spotify. I would gladly take a new song over a new video any day.
In regards to the ending the flower refers to the quote in the begging of the mv “Until the love of this flower has blossomed this heart won’t be at peace”
Beautiful video, one of my favorite song off Icarus Falls. Specifically Zayn on QOTD, its a outlet where people are still subscribing, Vehicle is there, you going to use especially when you dont do much promotion. Generally, I probably lean towards streaming put more money in making the music but think its down to the individual what best for them. Not everyone situation the same.
I personally think it depends on ur creative focus, I will listen a song if it's my taste, with or without an mv..I somewhere read Zayn channelizes his creativity through this type of storytelling, he writes his own scripts too..same goes with Lana or Taylor.so it depends on the artist .As an audience, quality matters to me. I won't want an MV which is made out of obligation, just bcoz it's trend.
Imo music video is important. My first song that I heard of Zayn was Dusk till Dawn on Mtv and I saw music video with all action and that brought me to Zayn. I believe if there was not that music video which interested me to listen to song few more times, I would not maybe listen Zayns music and what loss that would have been
Regarding putting money on making a video.. Than producing new music.. Agree your point on this.. As a Z fan I can say that he does whatever he finds interesting..'he wants what he wants'..So it's like if in his mind he has this idea of making a video on some song of his...He visualizes all that what he wants in the video.. He invests his full time in making it.. .so he doesn't care about money it will take or anything.. That's why what ever he does it's has that perfection.. So i can say it's His passion... there are a very few crazy ppl like him.. Ahhhh.. N that is why.. He is so inspiring to me.. 'There's a saying - Doing some work is good but doing it perfectly, is a whole different story' 😍
I think the mv is still essential to promote a song and get more views especially on youtube ! Because that way people get to receive and connect with the music two times more ( the song + the visuals) That's why usually songs with mv get more views and success than the ones without (regarding the quality of the song)
Not sure about this but he had a hard time getting RCA to let him release his album/music. So given that, it must be easier to make MV for existing songs. He gets to play around and be creative without anyone stopping him from releasing it?
I prefer the video being art, it will outlive him. The song is perfection, the National Geographic visuals marries the two art forms to be one cohesive piece.
Personally I really enjoy music videos. I find it interesting to see the the visuals the artist/ the team come up with. Some reactioners listen to the song first and then watch the music video maybe that helps? Thank you for your video! 😊
Erm bout your question, i guess ppl prefer videos that says something like a story suxh as dusk till dawn and not songs where the artist just sings at beautiful places! Just my opinion tho.
Music creater and singer has still the same time he has for creating music, production and recording companies rely on making videos to promote a song either its on TH-cam.
Great video! Also, please react to "Little black dress- Louis Tomlinson (Mexico)" and "Just hold on- Louis Tomlinson (Mexico)". Those performance have better sound quality and he had smashed it!
I think zayn is the most underrated artist in this gen..
It's a FACT.
True

True fans will stay, support and appreciate his efforts. Thankyou for sharing your point of View
Well said@ Eliza lake ....u covered everything I had in mind 😍

Jane Miller thank you! ❣️

The heartbeat effect of this song is amazing. You can even seem to hear the swishing pull and push of blood. Almost like a real heartbeat.
Pretty wild

There is so much good content to react to by Zayn!
Such a great a song and your breakdowns are always on point man! I’d love to see your reaction and breakdown to another Zayn’s song called BLUE. 🙏🏼
The flower at the end talk about peace

Zayn Pillowtalk react place

Hmm I prefer songs where Zayn's voice gets more up high on his range, this one yeah it is good song but a little bit boring to me.
