  • In this video we take a look at a Fluke 79 series III that is not powering on. After we replace the battery we end up on the other side of the spectrum and the meter is not turning off. Can we get this super nice Fluke DMM back in operation? It will be some BONUS troubleshooting at the end of this video that may help someone with the same issue with theirs. Hope you find it helpful and thanks for watching!

So it seems that possible problem was under the metal shielding of processor. Probable short on pads of ic? You got lucky there. Thanks for the look.

Hi ! Thank you for showing us the inside of the old Fluke 79III. Do you know in what year it was first released? I was surprised to see that the newer 17x series or the 77iv model does not look very different.

I believe it was 1997. They are similar in some ways for sure. The 179 did take the 79s place so it's just a few changes and you can still see the similarities. Thanks for your comment!

Most of the ones I have as used. It does depend on how they have been treated, but they are made very well.

I have bought several of the original 87s used off of ebay and after disassembling and cleaning them up and putting in new batteries each of them is spot on.

I have a 179 where the continuity beeper and backlight doesn't work .
I've heard this is notorious because of a film on the PCB.
    Any suggestions?
    It measures fine otherwise

I actually have (2) Fluke 179 DMMs and no issues with mine to say for certain. I have not heard of issues with them. I have had both of mine for around 15 years and bought them used. I think the 179 has the piezo disc on the back of the housing. I would at least check the buzzer, since it is just spring contacts connection when the housing halves go together and check for alignment and that the contact springs are still in place. The backlight I am not sure about without simply looking into it when or if the problem arises. Best of luck to ya and thanks for your kind comment!

I wish I had time, I do get asked this often. I do not have a repair service at this time. I work full time+ in an Industrial job and try to have time to edit videos to post. I try to help by posting what I have found with a repair as we learn together. I don't have a lot of time left. I seem more behind than ever. I wish you the best of luck with yours.

My fluke 187 has a problem in ohm meter function. It is unstable example if I mesure resistor 10Kohm 1% but it's running around 8K to 11K. Any suggestion for this problem.
    thank you

I would check for loose connections first. Including leads, leads jacks and solder joints along the signal path on the board. If you find nothing obvious then I would check really well for corrosion. Then next I would look at the calibration manual and go through it and you may possibly be able to narrow down if an adjustment could be an issue like cleaning a potentiometer really well etc. A calibration manual can be found on the Fluke website. www.fluke.com/en-us/support/manuals

I mentioned in the video that I had to use the series II manual it is close on some detail, but not all. The calibration manual is all I could find on the series III.

Well I believe they have been out of production for a while now. I have seen one here and there old stock for sale. I will say they sometimes are over $80. It is my experience to be patient and find a donor meter with a good switch? I know the 79-2 is very similar, but not sure they are exact.

I don't believe they have it available. All I see is the users manual and the calibration manual. That is around the time Fluke stopped sharing the service manuals I believe.

Almost seems like it is still in the self test mode on power up. If you have already tried the obvious like fresh battery and any visible corrosion and cleaning the board doesn't help you may want to look at the EEVBLOG forum on this issue. I know they have a lot of threads on Fluke issues and I have not seen this exact issue except corrosion or weak battery. Best of luck to ya!

I have been attempting Antique Radio repair as part of my post mid life crisis. Anyway, I have a Fluke model 117 that has worked like a dream for years, until recently the ohms function has been very unreliable I either get it to read or not at all. either a reading or OL . It has good probes. and the parts are clean, like a new resistor no matter how much pressure or movement on the part it just will not read. All other function seam to work just fine. Any ideas?

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Sounds like fun. I have not worked on the 117 to say for sure. I will simply mention the same things I would check on a 179, 87 etc. You know the leads are good, but I also have seen a bad connection at the jacks before sometimes a bad solder joint and other times in the case of the 87 the jack itself had broken and connection was intermittent. The only other thing I have seen is the rotary switch itself be an issue with a bad connection. The 87 will even pop loose from the back (plastic push tab) and loosen up the down pressure on the contacts. Hope you have fun with the radio restoring and best of luck to ya! 📻

Hi. I have a fluke 77 that sounds when I select the continuity function with not leads connected. I checked and I found this part broken drive.google.com/drive/folders/1IYKnqIpnDW1cQxQynd608evI36eL2aOf?usp=drive_link Do you know what part it is?

It looks like the precision resistor network is broken. It's the white rectangular thin device that is usually blue on the other side.
