I know the feeling. Happened to me more than I wanted as a Oriole fan in the '70s. We had some epic battles with those A's. After knocking out a talented, but slightly inexperienced team in '71, they never forgot and secretly vowed to not have the Orioles grab another Pennant from them, and we didn't. '73 and '74 we couldn't get them when it truly counted. Frank was gone, Brooks wasn't nearly as clutch in his wind down years, Dave Johnson was traded, Boog stayed hurt and bat was ineffective, Earl (king of the 3 run homer) was continously frustrated as the A's pitching staff totally shut down the long ball game, and Weaver just couldn't get anything consistent against Oaklands staff, who was just as good as the Orioles.
That's all the TV footage I've seen from this game. And all I've seen from NLCS Game #5 is a couple of clips from the bottom of the 9th inning. Unfortunately, not much LCS TV footage exists from 1969-1975.
@@1313otto Most of these games were wiped clean from the videotape that was used to record them during this time;it was done for reasons of storage space.
Campaneris was hosed, getting suspended for the rest of the series for the bat incident. One game would be justified, but that was too much, especially since they really were throwing at him and by aiming at his ankle trying to injure him. Billy Martin's work. I think maybe it's because 1972 really wasn't that long after the Juan Marichal-John Roseboro thing, and they didn't want anyone messing around with bats-and I might add especially Latin-American players. Remember that in the Roseboro incident, Tito Fuentes was also swinging a bat at people, and there was a minor league incident where Merritt Ranew was slugged with a bat by Santiago Rosario.
The bat incident was in game 2 and Campaneris was suspended for the rest of the five game ALCS. However, Campaneris was allowed to play the entire World Series and the rest of the suspension was enforced at the beginning of the 1973 season. If Campaneris had been banned from all or most of the World Series, the A's would have been at a severe disadvantage since they would have been missing him and also Reggie Jackson. Jackson missed the World Series because he tore or pulled his hamstring scoring what proved to be the winning run in the ALCS.
@@thomaswolf723 If Campaneris was banned from the World Series, as close as it was, I don't see any way the A's win. He was a key player both offensively and defensively. Maybe "the" key player, even ahead of Jackson. One game would have been fair. He threw a bat, nobody got hit, nobody got hurt.
Don't want to be speculating, but I think that if Detroit won this game (and series) they probably lose to the Big Red Machine. The Detroit lineup compared against the HoF lineups would have a LOT of trouble offensively against the Big Red Machine, plus the aging veteran lineup playing against HoFs...
I was born in Michigan I Wanted the Tigers to win ,but Oakland was the better team! they were Young the Tigers were getting old, if Billy Martin would've been sober and not Hung over in the dugout we could've won, but Oakland was the better team!

this is to good to be true i would love to see more of the playoffs if possible, can't get enough!
A classic championship series featuring two iconic managers.
From Tiger 🐅 stadium, thank you for this wonderful clip, was in the 8th grade. ⚾️
We watched this game in my fourth-grade class until the bell rang. Then I ran home to catch the end - and cried when the Tigers lost.
I haven't stopped crying
@@dallasbrubaker6054 Who knew on that day that the Tigers were so close to delaying the start of the Oakland A's dynasty?
@@billkhan3789 Yep... and the Mets nearly won in 1973.
They stopped the Big Red Machine.

Awww I’m sincerely sorry. It was such a great time in baseball wasn’t it?
Check out the Sanford and Son promo at the end!
Fred insisted on having a dentist who was white! 😂
Some great postseason baseball that year. Both this one and the World Series were close, tight ballgames.

5:05... Batting with no helmet. Crazy!
That was the norm in MLB for the first 85 years.

Juan Marichal got 10 games so missing the rest of the series was along the same lines regardless of post-season play
