    A giant parrot, hallucinating Jasmine, and Casper the Friendly Genie? It's another Disney remake alright, and despite this one being a crowd pleaser, the Nostalgia Critic is anything but amused as he reviews 2019's Aladdin remake.

    Aladdin is a 2019 American musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who co-wrote the screenplay with John August, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1992 animated film of the same name, which is based on the eponymous tale from One Thousand and One Nights. The film stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen, and Numan Acar, as well as the voices of Alan Tudyk and Frank Welker.

      People seem to think that the original was animated because of primitive technology. Hand-drawn animation wasn't anywhere near an undeveloped medium at the conception of Aladdin!
      People can't fathom that if they originally had the choice between live-action and animated, they would have a strong case for animation for artistic possibilities alone.

    I actually think Will Smith did fine as the genie when he’s allow to be Will Smith, not Will Smith pretending to be Robin Williams. Friend Like Me is a great example. The genie is a character that needs to be a big personality and both Robin Williams and Will Smith are big personalities in very different ways.

    That whole Jasmine was the Genie twist. I'm going to say right now, that could have worked. Maybe genies originated in Sherabot, and Jasmine's mother was a genie, maybe her mothers bracelet was the manacle from when she was a Genie and Jafar killed her when he learned she was free and couldn't grant his wishes. That's why he's so focused on Sherabot, if the mother came from there, then there must be other magical artifacts or knowledge. And all the years of repression stopped Jasmine from tapping into her powers, but when Jafar takes over and she sees the Genie, she realizes her mother was a genie and Jasmine, by that lineage gives her the ability to become a Genie, so Jafar uses his sorcery to try and force her to give up her humanity and become his wife, giving up not only her freedom as a woman, but as a human.
    It acts as a way to show how the repression from things like stereotypes or gender roles can harm a person and puts Jasmine's desire for freedom in a much more literal battle, not to mention it provides an interesting story about how Genies come to be. But more importantly it provides an interesting moral that I don't know how to quantify, so I'll explain. Jasmine wants to be treated equally to a man (in that she wants the right to rule). In becoming a Genie, she would have to power to change things, but she would be at the mercy of anybody's whim. She could have ultimate power and in doing so the right to rule, but she chooses not to because if she can't rule on her own terms, she won't do it. Even as I type this I can't fully explain my thought process, so I'll just leave it here.

      It would be an actually strong and interesting female character with nuance. And an interesting story with nuance (throwing a woman in power is not a magical key to heaven, just like overpowering a female character doesn't magically make her a good female character, etc.) It could actually take gender issues head on instead of...this half ass attempt Hollywood has been pulling for marketing.
      It would build on the universe too. I totally get it!

    Just a mild note on one thing he didn't touch on--
    We first meet Jasmine unintentionally stealing from a merchant to feed a kid. In the animated it's believable because she's sheltered and it's obviously her first time out. But in this one... this Jasmine wants to be FUCKING SULTAN. Her straight-up taking it from the table and then being surprised when the merchant gets angry that she has no money makes no sense. This Jasmine is well-read and can read maps and should know all about money and rules of society. Why would she casually take a product and think it'd be okay???
    I get they'd want to keep the intro of both Jasmines the same, but they're different characters, and it just seemed so incredibly off for this one.
    I also thought that she'd mention improving the state of the poor once she's in charge, since Aladdin and poor kids and shit. But it wasn't focused on.

    • @Iamokaywithmimes
      @Iamokaywithmimes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +152

      Imagine if Aladdin took Jasmine to her mother's country Shirabad on the magic carpet ride. It'd be romantic, a meaningful gesture, and we would actually see this country that's apparently so important. And maybe we'd actually learned how she was killed.

      Yeah must admit. I think it would have worked better if she knocked apples onto the ground for the kids and got caught doing it or something. This scene undercut her character from the start in the remake. It's like she's smart and savvy and can run a nation, but doesn't seem to understand the concept of money and payments.

    • @blitzwaffe
      @blitzwaffe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I think it would make more sense for her to simply pay for the apple and Aladdin somewhat seeing through her disguise. Then Aladdin would try to maybe swindle some money from her only to fall for her and resume the original story.

      Twisted is legit my favorite theatre production of all time. It's absolutely brilliant.
      "What remains of a man when that man is dead and gone? Only memories and stories of his deeds will linger on. But what if a man's accomplishments aren't in the tale they tell? Are the deeds that go unheralded his legacy as well? If a war breaks out tomorrow, we'll all have hell to pay. Why protect my reputation? I'm a dead man either way. How will they tell my story? How will they tell my tale? Will anybody even care? The question, then, is whether tis nobler in the mind to be well-liked but ineffectual, or moral but maligned. I'll never be a hero all the citizens adore, but if I hide to save my life, what has my life been for? What has my life been for? The road AHEAD MAY TWIST. But I WILL NEVER SWERVE! I'll GIVE THEM ALL THE UNSUNG ANTIHERO THEY DESERVE! I've NOTHING left to lose, so the only path to choose is TWISTED! Let them twist my words, let the people scorn me. Who cares if no-one will ever mourn me? Let them BURY THE SIDE OF THE STORY they'll NEVER LEARN! LET THE TRUTH BE TWISTED! LET MY LIFE BE TWISTED! I'LL BE TWISTED, IT'S MY TURN!"

    "What, does becoming the Sultan just get you a new hat?"
    Yeah, it kind of does. Like, the Sultan isn't shown to be a dictator running on fear and oppression. His guards aren't automatons, forced to obey his orders, they can choose not to obey.
    It's actually a very nice example of how Jafar's short-sighted lust for power betrays him: he wastes a wish claiming a title he didn't need. Once he's the most powerful sorcerer in the world, he could just MAKE the Sultan abdicate to him. But no, he demands someone bestow the title on him...without earning it, so it doesn't get him anything: "Cool, you're the Sultan, me and the rest of the guards are going to rebel."

    The original one was more caring and brave, he was tough himself to find a way to win Jasmine's heart, he fought Jafar as a giant snake and when he was helpless and powerless he still wasn't afraid and came up with another way to defeat Jafar.

      People don't exactly have positivity to the Middle East, but they are okay with India especially as they are increasing as a burgeoning economy. Much like how Hollywood panders to China, it's good business.
      That said, the fictional region of Agribah could easily of been a mix, so it's not ridiculously far off. I would of preferred if it actually just went with Bollywood. It was an amusing movie, good for one watch, but I wish it had just gone fully bollywood.

    That was the major disadvantage the "live-action" Lion King had. It wasn't animated. The animals looked TOO real, and they couldn't have the expression you get in animation. They also cut out any "cartoony" bits to maintain the illusion that it was a National Geographic documentary. There was no Timon in a hula skirt. There was no Rafiki doing karate. The "Can't Wait to be King" song was neutered by not having the goofy cartoony parts. Even a giant lion's head in the clouds wasn't realistic enough for it.

    Ya didn't mention 2 of my biggest complaints.
    1. Near the end, Jasmine just blurts out a super in depth back story for one of the guards out of nowhere, trying to get us to feel for him, but I was just confused as to how this is the first time any of this was mentioned.
    2. During the song, One Jump Ahead, it's a song about him being a hungry thief, and in the original, showcased how he was a hungry thief. In this version, he sang it while helping Jasmine so what he was doing didn't fit with the lyrics or the meaning of the song.

      You could make the same argument for live-action versions of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. They also had Broadway shows. Well, sadly for Beauty and the Beast’s case, the Broadway production’s not around anymore. But you could still watch some professional and high school productions of the musical though, so you’d still get a live-action Beauty and the Beast experience.

      Now I am wondering. Who do you think would be more “intimidating” if they crossed paths with one another, Jafar in the 2019 Aladdin remake or Fire Lord Ozai in M Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender adaptation? Or would it just devolve into a silly slap fight between those two live-action character portrayals?

      people forget that the first is animated. ANIMATED. A lot of the mannerisms from genie in the animated movie is why Robin is loved.
      as for the voice, Will is Will and Robin is Robin. But Robin's Genie would be too cartoony for a LIVE ACTION movie.
      The movie had to blend the fun with some realism.
      While genie is animated an magical..WHY would he be just as equally animated as the animated movie?
      We should know by now that the mannerisms in animated shows are meant for us..not the people in that universe.
      A dropped jaw that hits the ground and makes a ring like an Anvil hitting..in animated movies is equivalent to nothing more than raised eyebrows in the real world. Cartoons MUST be exaggerated for fun. You just can't have it that way in the real world without it being too damn corny.
      So basically, the movie, if you just understand how it HAS to be different, will be AS enjoyable as the animated movie.
      it shouldn't be seen as compared. It should be seen as capable of being paired. And they pair nicely.
      You can ask your kids, or yourself which you'd rather watch, the animated or live animateion adn still get the same feelings of the story and some enjoyment.

    • @bandotaku
      @bandotaku 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@agonleed3841 I understand what you are getting at, but have you seen Robin live? The man is a cartoon. The animators got a lot of inspiration from watching him do the lines, and only enhanced what they were already seeing. Will Smith is good when it's him, but the animation for him didn't do him any favors. It was very clunky. If they styled it more like classic movie musicals and really tried a fresh take, rather than some mix that fell flat, then it would have been great. No one is mad that it's different, they are mad it's not different _enough_ .
      I also disagree that the animated mannerisms in cartoons are for the audience, as quite often, characters will interact with those mannerisms. Like Aladdin and Jafar to Genie and so forth.

    • @agonleed3841
      @agonleed3841 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bandotaku starting from the end...yes they interact..buyt it's "normal" in their world. That's why I used the term "equivalent" or thought I did.
      Real live people..that would be too cartoony. The movie didn't want to be too damn cartoony.
      I watch a lot of asian movies as well. Fantasy movies. In a lot of those, they will have a little magical pet. Something like a Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. It can be anything. Some octopus looking thing..whatever.
      A lot of manga/anime have those also. In the anime they are very animated. Very exagerrated with the movements and features. But in live action, that magical fantasy thinig has to be toned down.
      There are some that go the exaggerated route..but even then you can tell the difference in QUALITY.
      The ones that are more animated are considered "cheap" in a way. Too cartoony. Childish. Something anyone over the age of 15 would maybe have apprehensions to watch.
      Whereas the ones that tone it down is enjoyed by all ages more often.
      And I grew up on the old aladdin and robin williams. He's one of my favorite comedians for his antics. But I've seen his serious tones as well. And if they had him in this live action, they'd try to tone him down. He'd be a mix...as Will is. In an effort for him to be fun..but not OVER THE TOP.
      Honestly, I think the tune people would be on then would be, "oh my god, they wasted Robin Williams. He did so great in the animated movie, but they didn't let him do that in this live action."
      The movie is live action and they wanted it to have a base in the real life.
      Again..in this world that doesn't believe it's a cartoon..doesn't really have the ideas of the exaggerations of such...WHY would Genie drop his jaw ALL the way to the ground with an anvil sound?
      It's great that WE get the references of some impressions..but what would this REAL LIFE person in THIS specific world..what would his reactions be?
      He can't continue the conversation when this magical thing is making impressions that he doesn't have a clue about. He's going to call it out. And it will be constantly him asking, "ok, so who's that one" And the genie saying, "yuou know what, never mind..not your time" which would be a lame running joke after the 3rd impression.
      And there's no reason to do impressions of many people within agrabah because WE don't know many people of Agrabah. We only know a few. So Aladdin would get the impressions, but not us. Then..who cares?
      So..if Robin was doing it..the same rules would apply. And his voices are impressions also..voices Aladdin wouldn't know.
      In animation, cartoons..we just accept it because..they're cartoons. They can do anything. It's a cartoon. They can know anything across time and space. You don't even expect it to be real. You can visually see that there are no rules besides whatever they illustrator wants.
      So..take away a lot of the visual and audio impressions and what do you have? Exactly the performance that Will gave
